Just wondering if this is compatible with ck+ and/or HIP :)))
Thanks for your work
There's a version for HIP, although it is a bit outdated (does not include the new church system and might be incompatible with newer versions of HIP, I don't know...). Although the incompatibles with HIP are not that major, the main problem is that some event files are overriden by both mods.

I guess I will work on the mod in fall again. Currently , I'm too busy and also summer is really not the time of the year to sit in front of a PC all day. :)

Summer is the best time to sit in front of a PC all day, enjoying your sweet air conditioning while the sun burns everything to hell outside :p

I'm going to upload an update soon. It will finally fix the government icon bug, introduce a difficulty setting and some more major changes. Depending on the difficulty setting, your candidate get's a higher score in the elective investiture succession. That should make it possible to focus less on keeping your dynasty in power, if you so desire. I find it a nice compromise between just using the "Non Dynastic Succession" game rule - which breaks the core concept of this mod and a more relaxed playthrough.
Also, there's this wonderful bloodline.

Some other features need minor polishment, I will show them later.

So here's the new version 4.0. For those who only use the steam workshop: There has been the version 4.0b on the forums exclusively, which introduces the church interface. This will now also be uploaded to the steam workshop.

New Features 4.0:
  • Antipopes: In the original mod, they were a bit lackluster. With the last update (4.0b) and the introduction of the (Offmap) Church Interface they didn't became more interesting, even worse, they got annoying. This is due to the Church Interface only being available to those under the rule of the one and only rightful pope. So when your liege declared someone antipope, it only had negative consequences: No more Church Influence, pope (in rome) kicks you out of your office, etc. So in this version, two things change. Firstly, when someone proclaims an antipope, every vassal of this realm can revoke his oath and fight as a rebel for the Pope in Rome immediatly. So when choosing this option as a cardinal, you will not loose your job (technically there's a 1 day window in which you could be fired, but that's very unlikely). All AI vassals will decide which Pope to support based on their opinions of the pope, antipope and liege lord (and a fair bit of randomness). Also, nearby catholic realms also get prompted and have the option to join the fight. This results in the proclamation of an antipope being a very serious event that may, in some situtations escalate.
    Moveover, this version also adds a new CB for the antipope himself (if you play as him). (The AI will (and cannot) make you antipope, but you can switch to playing as him or do some other stuff (cheats)). The CB allows a smooth transition from antipope to pope, dealing with giving up your old titles and getting the popes titles. Yet again, as the opposing side is another pope, anyone who feels that he should take a side may join one of them (Warning: You liege cannot join your war, stupid vanilla restriction!).
    Hint: Making friends with powerful rulers (is_friend) makes it much more likely that they will join you.
  • Mending the Schism: Did you find that this mod lacks some kind of ultimate goal? Did you always find it a bit unfair, that the orthodox faith can mend the schism, but the catholic cannot? Well, good news for you: When you control Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria (Rome is trivially controlled) and take the head of the orthodox church as prisoner, you can mend the schism, turning the orthodox faith (and its heresies) into catholic heresies. All orthodox rulers have the option to become catholic (and a lot of them will take it). As a reward, the Pope who mends the schism gets a guaranteed sainthood. That's right, no strings attached, they are willing to forgive you any sin. So the ultimate challenge: Get the Holy Father and a Saint Bloodline with the same character. Tell me if you've done it. :)
  • Added Bloodline for a Pope who fathers children (see above). You cannot get the bloodline if you already have it (obviously).
  • Difficulty Setting:
    • Very Easy: +150 reasons for own successor
    • Easy: +50 reasons
    • Normal: nothing
    • Hard: -50 reasons
  • Church Policy Monumentality gives a build cost and time reduction for great works as well. Completing upgrades/stages will grant you church influence with this policy.
  • Playable Theocracies gain the 10x modifier in the Monks&Mystics Societies (not tested).
Bugfixes: Government Icon, God's Dynasty, Localisation, other stuff I forgot.

Notes: The church policy conversion / missionaries still has no real effect. I wrote an event chain for converting provinces, but my province events are totally messed up. Therefore these are deactivated.

I hope you enjoy it. Have fun!

edit: Also updated the first post of the thread to contain the new changes.

Offmap Papacy was my first idea when Jade Dragon came out, but I couldn't implement it :( I'm glad someone was able to do it :)

P.S.: Is there a possibility to make an alliance with Pope? Maybe via your papal influence?

Sounds interesting and is possible. I am, however, not entirely sure how benefitial such an alliance is in terms of gameplay. It will only help in foreign wars, if you are a vassal - but that might be enough.
So the only question is what would be a good cost and how long should it last.

So I was giving this mod a try, but at the same time I also wanted to use another idea, namely start in a random world with most settings historical, except starting with only female rulers and setting every religion to have Enatic Clans, and it appears that even with Enatic succession, female characters cannot be appointed as heirs, even though inheritance seems to work properly (selecting new female bishops and the like). Perhaps something for a future update? I think it's not actually gamebreaking because Enatic means male successors cannot be elected, meaning the succession effectively works like Enatic primogeniture, but it still takes away from the gameplay somewhat.

Double PS:
The same seems to hold for non-Christian religions, even those that normally allow female temple-holders.

Also, female titles seem to simply be Countess, Duchess, etc for female theocratic leaders. Perhaps a flavor thing that could be changed?

Edit: Seems I've encountered another bug, when I became pope I continued playing as my daughter instead, while my old character was the pope (and didn't retain the old titles) which doesn't seem intended to me, or am I just misunderstanding something here?

This mod is unfortunately not intended for enatic clans at all. The whole code is based on the assumption that only male (adult) catholics are valid characters. I assume the playing as daugther thing was also using enatic clans?

Interesting, you cannot lead troops as the pope indeed... Probably not working as indended. :) Although I have no idea why this is the case. I'm pretty sure that the vanilla pope can lead troops (right?) so it should be related to this mod.

Yup, it was.

Any chance you're going to expand to playing as different religions?

No, I don't think so. There are just too many places where the code assumes the theocracies to be catholic. You'd have to more or less redo the whole mod. It would be possible to just make another playable fake theocracy government for different religions, add some kind of generic elective succession to them (but who gets to vote and for what reason do they vote for or against your candidate?) and call it a day. But expanding all the other content of the mod that gives some flavour to playing as a bishop to other religions is not feasible.
Also for other religions, different mechanics would be necessary (no college of cardinals, no pope and instead a much less powerful religious heads (often vassal of ruler/ruler himself)-> less interesting).

Is it WAD that I can't lead troops as the pope?

I just had another look at the game files and it's a vanilla thing:
Code:
fit_to_lead_troops = {
    #[...]
    NAND = { # Only certain popes will lead troops
        has_landed_title = k_papal_state
        NOR = {
            has_education_martial_trigger = yes
            has_minor_title = title_commander
            has_job_title = job_marshal
        }
    }
    #[...]
}
