Wondering if someone could whip up, or explain to me, how to make a start similar to the year 666 workaround that was created for the demo. I quite enjoyed starting from scratch, along with all other characters, as it resulted in some quite interesting alternate histories.

I tried modifying bookmarks and defines myself, but my result was a bookmark of a different name starting in the same year as vanilla.

Basically I'm looking for a bookmark starting at year 1000 where everyone is an independent count and start from there! Not looking for historical accuracy, just the amusing alternate timelines from such a start!

You're doing the bookmarks wrong. Don't try putting separate start dates inside the same set of brackets. Create new ones.

A very easy way to do this would be to replace the history/titles path with an empty folder. I think this is doable as the game just makes up random counts + barons in its place - I think.

There are a few things you should keep in mind before replacing or removing the files in the history/titles folder:

1) You shouldn't remove/replace the holy order duchy-tier titles, or you'll find that you'll be able to hire them from the start of the game...
2) Removing the Papal States or the ecumenical patriarch will possibly cause them never to appear (in the case of the Papal States, someone may be able to place an anti-pope).
3) If you decide to keep the pope or ecumenical patriarch in the game, you should also consider leaving e_sunni and e_shiite intact for muslims. In this case, you should also modify landed_titles in the common folder and allow landless = yes for both of these empires so that they'll function in the same way as the pope/patriarch.
