Hello everyone! The 2024 VIET/RICE survey is now also officially open, and this is your chance to provide feedback to help make these mods even better! The deadline to submit a response has not yet been determined and will be announced later. As thanks for participating, at the end of the survey is also an opportunity for you to vote in a non-binding poll for your pick for a future Celtic flavor pack for RICE.

I hope everyone's enjoying (or will soon enjoy) Roads to Power! I cannot guarantee when updates for my mods will be out.

I strongly advise you do not use VIET/RICE for new games with Roads to Power, unless you know what you're doing. For those of you who still want to continue games on old patches, you can use the manual install versions of VIET/RICE from GitHub.

Thanks all for your patience and understanding! I'll continue to post more screenshots about VIET and RICE's update to Roads to Power.

Additionally, the VIET/RICE 2024 survey is still ongoing. At this time, I don't have a deadline yet for when it'll end, but I'll plan to do that sometime after the VIET/RICE update is out. The survey is also an opportunity for you to vote in a non-binding poll for your pick for a future Celtic flavor pack for RICE.

VIET/RICE 2024 Survey & Celtic Flavor Pack Poll

“I have been a stranger in a strange land."
- Exodus 2:22

VIET 1.13.0 "Periplus" is now out. Besides updating the mod to the newest patch/DLC, it also adds in several new travel events. Remember you may need to unsubscribe and resubscribe (multiple times if necessary) for mods to update properly.

Please be aware that this is a basic update, as I have not changed a lot of VIET content to better reflect the new Admin and adventurer systems, only what was necessary to ensure the mod was properly updated. For instance, a few events meant for landed characters might be odd to have as a landless adventurer. This was done to save time and get a stable version of the mod out ASAP, as I am and will continue to be very busy IRL at present. I intend to gradually improve cohesion with RtP's new content in future updates.

New events added in this version: 12

  • Added 12 generic travel events
  • Added new Greek-themed event backgrounds
  • Added new decision categories for VIET’s decisions
  • Slightly tweaked likelihood of various travel events
  • Miscellaneous bugfixes and tweaks

*Adapted from VIET for CK2

Says he advices against using the unupdated mod. Updates his mod a couple of hours later. :D
I initially thought basic updating would take longer but thankfully not lol, surprisingly not a lot of the basic code relevant to VIET has changed. The bigger challenge will be screening through all the events to disable or change some for landless adventurers, which may take a while, but I figured that's a lower priority than getting the basic update out.

I can probably write a tool to identify which events contain references to holding a title or being a noble.

Feel free to take a shot at it, I'd appreciate any help! :) Though to clarify, would this do anything beyond what a basic search function would do?

I can use GenAI search to detect themes. It is pretty good as a summary/search tool when you use the right model.
Give me this weekend to give it a try and of it works well, I'll give you a list of LOC names for events that assume the character is a land holder.

Sure, feel free to take a shot at it. Though no rush, as I've a backlog of things I need to do a sweep for when reworking evenfs besides this and I'll be pretty busy IRL so I'm not going to do my general rework of VIET events for a while

At the risk of sounding ungrateful, I'm getting hard crashes on loading (side note, Paradox did something godawful in the most recent update that causes my PC to freeze, demanding a hard restart, instead of just a considerate crash to desktop, which I haven't encountered since 2020 and it's pissing me off, but that's definitely not your fault). Error log is very short and as follows:

[22:18:43][E][pdx_msgrdk_user.cpp:1012]: PdxMsGrdkUser::OnSigninSuccess, xuid = 2533274793334643

I think this might have to do with the dreamer character event? EDIT: Nope, it's not the culprit. It is bringing up in the error log though.

Apologies for griping. Honestly, this most recent update has been such a technical foul-up for me (and a few unlucky other people who are getting crashes even with no mods enabled), I'm surprised the response is as good as it is. Never mind losing my last save, CK3 is either unbootable, or one bad turn from unbootable, as is. Went as far as to get a refund for the latest DLC, I'm not really in the mood to pay $26 for alleged content for a game that freeze so badly I have to perform a physical reset.

Unfortunately crashes are notoriously difficult to diagnose if there isn't some kind of reproducible cause. Does the issue happen when you're running *only* VIET and no other mods? Otherwise can't really think of what else since I haven't encountered the issue myself of course. Since you're already aware of it, might want to check other threads about CTDs for those who have it with other mods or vanilla, and see if there's any common trends that might be related to your issue.

Thank you for responding. Unfortunately, at least on these forums, the other crashing/freezing technical threads only share one thing in a common: the same recommendations ("Do you have a 12th generation Intel CPU? You probably do,"), the same troubleshooting recommendations, and no one actually confirming a solution (either they report it hasn't helped, or they don't report it being fixed, which could go either way). Since it's actually pretty easy to get CK3 to crash with zero mods installed just on startup (fortunately it's not guaranteed), I've decided to troubleshoot with the five mods I have installed (yours, CFP, Beauty is Congenital, and Invites for Noble and Invites for Debutantes). I found the same mod arrangement on Steam also caused the same freezing, rather than a less infuriating but still bad CTD, so you can't blame Microsoft for their file structure/secure sandbox, that's all on Paradox.

I'm going to try troubleshooting with a slightly different arrangement, and a new save (on the Xbox for Windows version, since I established the same bug is reproducible on Steam). See if that makes a difference. It might just be a case of "Paradox broke their game so badly with the most recent update, you probably shouldn't play it for a few months"--they basically admitted half of that when they rushed through two hotfixes immediately after their mandatory update. That, or just "obtain" an older version of the game, with that version's DLC options, and play it like that. If you're going to lose your saves either way, who wouldn't prefer a game that CTD every few hours, instead of one that completely freezes your PC and forces a mechanical restart every 5 to 10 minutes?

Still, thanks for your help. I'm pretty sure it's not VIET, and if it is somehow related, it's still on Paradox for breaking everything so badly even by their own standards. In the last eight years of Stellaris, I don't remember any update being this broken.

NEAR FUTURE PLANS FOR VIET

As some of you know, a release date of November 4 was recently announced for the Wandering Nobles Event Pack DLC. This was much sooner than I thought! While I anticipate this will be much simpler to update to compared to Roads to Power, I am busy in the next few weeks, especially around early November, so there's a good chance my mods will not be able to be updated quickly after. If that is the case, then it is possible that VIET might take ~1.5-2 weeks to update, and RICE 2-3 weeks.

Thanks all for your understanding and continued support!

Forgot to post this yesterday since I was busy, but just wanted to let you know that now that the new CK3 DLC, Wandering Nobles, just came out, as previously discussed I cannot guarantee when my mods will be officially updated. I'm extremely busy this week IRL, so even if the mods require almost no patching, it might take me 1-2 weeks for the VIET update and 2-3 weeks for the RICE update.

I strongly advise you do not use VIET/RICE for new games with Wandering Nobles and the new patch until the official updates are out. If you know what you're doing, feel free to try VIET/RICE with the new patch/DLC at your own risk. For those of you who still want to continue games by rolling back to old patches, you can use the manual install versions of VIET/RICE from GitHub.

Thanks all for your patience and understanding!

Version 1.14.0 "Zhang Qian" (Released 11/15/24)
c8eMusj.jpg

VIET has been updated to Wandering Nobles / Patch 1.14!
Steam Workshop Download | Github Manual Download | Paradox Mods Download

Discord Server | Website

Zhang Qian (c. 195 - 114 BCE) was a Han Dynasty explorer, diplomat, and official who traveled through much of Central Asia, paving the way for future Chinese conquests and explorations of the region, as well as the development of the so-called Silk Roads linking much of the Old World.

VIET 1.14.0 "Zhang Qian" is now out. Besides updating the mod to the newest patch/DLC, it also adds in various tweaks and several travel themed events, based on the results of the impromptu poll held earlier this month on Discord and Twitter. My minor mods have also all been updated to the latest patch.

Remember you may need to unsubscribe and resubscribe (multiple times if necessary) for mods to update properly. A new game is not required, but recommended to be safe.

New events added in this version: 10

  • Added 10 generic travel events
  • Added new 4X option for the VIET Resource Gains/Losses game rule
  • Added new game rule to reduce or disable chances of Clutter Artifacts appearing
  • Disabled several decision-based event chains (like the Ransom Kidnapped Servants) for landless rulers
  • Changed most book artifacts like the Lusty [Culture] Maid from the miscellaneous to the journal category newly added in vanilla
  • Reduced chances AI will get Clutter Artifact events
  • Fixed issues with eunuch trait due to recent vanilla changes to eunuchs traits
  • Miscellaneous bugfixes and tweaks

Version 1.14.1 "Pierogi" (Released 12/2/24)

“I am the emperor, and I want dumplings!”
- Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria (1793-1875)

In honor of El Tyranos' newest offering with the West Slavic Attire DLC, I'm uploading minor updates for VIET and RICE. Remember you may need to unsubscribe and resubscribe (multiple times if necessary) for mods to update properly. VIET 1.14.1 "Pierogi" adds a few new events, including 1 event about dumplings, and English placeholders for the Polish translation, so those who play in Polish can play VIET without seeing gibberish.

New events added in this version: 8

  • Added events with the following themes:
    • 5 forest
    • 2 fire
    • 1 dumpling
  • Added 2 new artifacts: Dumpling Recipe and Reliable Fire Striker
  • Added English placeholder for the Polish language version of CK3 (i.e. if you play in Polish, VIET content will display in English instead of gibberish)
  • Miscellaneous bugfixes and tweaks

To those who celebrate, happy holidays!

To commemorate the 12th anniversary of the release of the first version of VIET for CK2 on 12/11/12, I'm releasing a small VIET update that includes a few new events adapted from CK2 VIET. VIET started off more as VIET+RICE, and VIETerans may recall a lot has changed since 2012, but I sincerely hope VIET and RICE have developed for the better. I am as always grateful to all of you for your support over these past 12 years in my CK modding career.

New events added in this version: 6
  • Added 6 generic events*
  • Miscellaneous bugfixes and tweaks

VIET/RICE 2024 Survey Results

Merry Christmas everyone! As a gift for the holidays, here's the official survey results for this year's VIET/RICE survey.

Thank you everyone who participated in this year's survey - the results and analysis took longer to publish than usual as I was quite busy, but here we are! We increased the number of responses this year to 937, with a variety of diverse responses. Like last time, this feedback will be valuable in helping shape the future of VIET and RICE.

Thanks everyone again, and for those who celebrate any holidays this time of year, hope you're having a good holiday season!

VIET SCRIPTS AND SCRIBES PREVIEW #2

It's been a while since we've had news or teasers about VIET's Scripts and Scribes Event Pack! As some of you know, I've had to delay work on it due to my increasingly busy schedule in 2024. I have been making slow progress on it, researching and coming up with event ideas related to the event pack's themes of languages and writing.

Today, I'd like to share an example of a random event that reflects the event pack's themes, specifically that of language: this one concerns the special jargon of the Banu Sasan, a term used in the medieval Middle East to describe various groups of beggars, charlatans, rogues, and other “lowlifes” in the medieval Islamic world.. In the VIET/RICE 2024 surveys, a lot of respondents requested for more regional events (particularly that which wouldn't fall under the purview of RICE's more specific flavor), so this event is also an example of such regional events, as it can only happen if you happen to meet certain cultural, regional, or religious triggers.
