Modded to Unmodded for PVP

So what do you have to do to play a friend in PVP if they game is unmodded but your modded.

I renamed the mod folder and then verify game files to restore them to default and it still saves my game is modded.

Do I need a clean install?

I haven't tried it myself, but what you've done sounds to me like it ought to work.

Are you perhaps running into the known issue where users with the Flashpoint expansion aren't able to play vs. those without?

depending on what platform you got battletech from you might be able to install a second copy via paradox launcher
