I wanted to create my first small mod (changing the ruler and his dynasti of the duchy of Champagne, France), but this all turned out to be a lot more difficult than I had anticipated.

Could someone help me out please?

Read here, particularly the memos, which cover save file editing.

If that's too confusing, I'm also starting to add direct step-by-step explanations to the modding section Wiki, which you are encouraged to help with.

Specifically, once you are done with your changes, you can include them on the Champagne page here. You do have to register to edit, though, to keep the spam down (it killed Havard's old page.)

edit: Veld'd. But Veld, why isn't that modding guide stickied?

I've just created a new Dynasti and 3 characters (with the new dynasty id number)

So how do I make one of them ruler of the duchy? (and how do I play the mod...)
By "the mod," you mean play with the changes you made?

You can modify the scenario files to include them, but it's much easier to just load a game and use the save file. Include them in the character section with the proper tag, scroll to the bottom of the save, search up for the tag. The first thing you'll find is the realm information: include your guy. The second thing you'll find is the duchy ownership information: include your guy.

The tricky part is that you'll die on day one if you load up like that. You also need to be sure you include yourself as the ruler of at least one county title, too.

I just done that and played and the characters are there, but the dynasti isn't.
They don't have a lastname (while that was my main purpose)

I tried to change that in the save file as well, but there's nothing about dynasties there, so where should I do that?

You said you had already added the dynasties. You know where to do that, right?

Add it in (WITH A UNIQUE NUMBER) to the db/dynasties.txt file. Then be sure that exact unique number is what your characters are using.

There should be no problems at all unless it's like fifty characters long (and even then, I think the only thing that happens is it cuts off) or if it has certain unrecognizable characters. If you go to my inkwell, on the first page of the Magnus the Wealthy AAR, there's a list of characters that work and don't work with the ingame display. If you're not using strange characters, don't sweat it, though.

Aah yes, I think I know the problem now. I created the dynasti, but the pc said that db\dynasties was a read only map, so I put it in (the new) dynasti1.2,
which isn't used in the scenario's.

Just changed now, and testing.
