Hi there. Recently I have decided to try my hand at modding the save game files to get more historically accurate games. At first I stuck with changing names to have numbers and nicknames in them - nothing major. Recently, however, I tried adding titles to two AI nations.

The gist is this - Recently Germany fell apart, with Swabia taking the German king's counties but not his higher titles. So I decided to give Germany to Swabia and Burgundy and Italy to the guy who ruled Lower Lorraine and Tuscany. I'm certain I did something wrong, as the country select map simply shows some part of Hungary, and the game crashes no matter who I select. If it matters, my version of the game is CK 1.05, with the BOPACK mod and a few (largely cosmetic) chnages of my own - I don't own Deus Vult or any of its mods.

If it would help, I could provide a copy of the savegame file via PM.

If I understand you correctly, you gave SWAB the title of GERM, and gave LOLO the titles BURG and ITAL, and did not change the ownership of any provinces?

Make sure that all characters are moved from SWAB to GERM, and from LOLO to BURG (or ITAL -- depending on what you made the primary title). If you forget even one, the game crashes.
And of course do a doublecheck for the owner of these titles, it should be identical for SWAB and GERM and for LOLO/BURG/ITAL.

That the map centers on Hungary is normal, that's because you did not update the capitals. It will correct itself in the first save.

I'm pretty sure I moved all of the characters and made the dukes the owners of their respective titles, though I'll doublecheck to make sure. Thank you.

Well, I took your advice, and it turns out I missed a LOT of stuff with "SWAB" and "LOLO" in them. After taking care of them, the game worked perfectly fine (other than the weird fact that I couldn't select my provinces to build improvements, but that went away after a few months).

There is one final detail that isn't a game crasher, but is bizarre. As I mentioned before, I made a few changes to the starting situation. One of these changes was giving Anselm of Bec traits that better reflected his historical role (wise, the highest ecclesiastical education, zealous, a more accurate age). For some reason, ever since then, he completely disappears a few years into the game. Not die or leave Normandy, but for all intents and purposes is completely erased from existance. Neither the Dynastic Glory download or the savefile can bring him or his dynasty up, and, while not a game breaker, it's becoming really baffling.

Once a character is dead and he has no claims, titles, heirs, relatives he will be purged from your ongoing game (this happens automatically during each turn of the month)

That makes sense, though it does seem kind of cheap to have one of the Church's most influential philosophers disappear after a few years. Maybe I should give him a claim on Kent just to keep him around in the save.

Now the only problem I have is editing an end to wars so I can have historical (or, barring that, believable) results - i.e. I don't mind the Seljuks taking Anatolia, but they shouldn't completely destroy the Byzantines, and the Fatamids shouldn't have Moravia, etc. However, wars seem to be the single most complicated entries in the savefile, and it's made worse by the fact that the entries for non-playable countries don't appear.

Isn't that only with Deus Vult though? He states he doesn't have DV.

Thank you both for your help. In any event, a computer virus wrecked the computer I had CK on, and since I now use wireless instead of dial-up, I'll probably just upgrade to DV, so I'm afraid the discussion has become something of a moot point. I'll keep your advice in mind, however.
