I think we can safely conclude this game now. All players that have voiced their opinion here are in favour of that and this includes the two most important Axis players that are still fighting. Maybe Andrew could be so kind to start a new thread for Monday Game VI? It seems clear that it will be DD 1.2. Also maybe it is a good idea to try and assign countries before we start to make sure all majors are played by reliable players. I think it's better to do it before Monday 20:00 CEST, as experience tells me that doing it at the start of the first session leads to less reliable players slipping in.

In an attempt to get the country assignment going: my first choice would be SU (and try to play Comintern as an alliance completely independent of the Allies). We might not have too many possible players for Germany, especially if Andrew is looking for some variety. I don't mind playing it if necessary, but we'll see how many candidates we have. If I play them I do hope to get a loyal and reliable Japan though ;) (Edit: I just realised this can be interpreted in various ways. I am referring to the Monday Games II and II when I was Germany, not to Gen. Schuermann in this one). Speaking about Japan, I would put them forward as third choice, though I can play other countries as well if needed with the exception of the UK, as I do want some variety.

Later on I will give some more comments about Monday Game V.

I'm sure I'll overlook plenty of things, but here are some of my promised thoughts. That there was no pressure on UK forces and territory after the main war started was not necessarily a bad move by the Axis. It's tricky for Italy to fight in Libya and Egypt when the UK has naval and air superiority, which I felt was the case. Actually when war broke out I had all my forces in places where no Axis appeared, mainly Egypt and Burma, so the Axis didn't have to face those forces in France for example. Like I said not attacking the UK at all is not per definition a wrong decision, but I think that it's not a bad move as long as the Axis forces that become available by not doing this are used somewhere else. In this case one could think of the SU. Taking them out as soon as possible and then turning to the Allies is a very good strategy in my opinion.

What I didn't really understand was that nobody attacked the Allies, apart from Gen. Schuermann in Australia with what looked like roughly half his forces, but only Germany seemed to be fighting the SU. It's easy for me to say, not having been able to look in the Axis kitchen and having the benifit of hindsight, but I felt that possibly the Axis could have coordinated things a little better and could have applied more pressure on some of their opponents in the beginning, when we were the most vulnerable. Also after the SU was eliminated I couldn't help feeling that we were fighting relatively isolated countries, although changes in personnel didn't help the Axis cause. Mr. G sort of confirms this above. Possibly partly because of this we managed to pick off our opponents in various theaters one by one. Examples of this are the liberation of Australia, the first invasion of Italy and the invasion of Japan.

Our strategy depended of course very much on what the Axis would do. It's hard to think of that before the game. After that undisturbed beginning we were still mostly defending, trying to do small attacks here and there to divert the Axis and do some small damage, like in the Netherlands. The main areas of defence were in Burma/India and later on in the Middle East as well. Once I thought I had stabilized things in Burma we could think of attacking. Having naval superiority we had the huge advantage that we could choose where. In all modesty I think we used that advantage quite effectively and it won us the game.

Mr. G asked what happened to his fleet. One of your subs used it to protect some forces attacking Crete. I had a powerful fleet in the Eastern Med to protect my interests there, so obviously I sent it to Crete to break the invasion. A naval battle followed, but for some inexplicable reason the Italian fleet was not retreated until 95% of the ships were sunk. I sank 50 Italian ships and lost 0 myself.

I've started a thread in the Doomsday forum. That doesn't have a multiplayer subforum yet but that might help us get some exposure and good new recruits. Here's the link:

In the previous campaign, I tried a very early attack on the SU and that proved too tricky to bring off. I still wanted to take down the Soviets quickly as I knew that Traks would be aggressive with them. But, with the veteran Mr Sljivovic playing France, I made them my first priority and planned to attack them in the Spring of 39, after the end of Czechoslovakia.

Japan had an independent scheme to conquer the Netherlands early and this dovetailed nicely with my plan for Germany. The Allies were the first to DOW, reacting to Japan's aggression. When Germany then joined the war by allying with Japan, the Wehrmacht was positioned and ready for a swift and decisive knockout of France.

Germany then had to focus upon the Eastern front, defeating Poland and then following through with the desired early attack on the Soviets. This campaign then absorbed all my attention as Traks was a furious and energetic opponent. Italy was asked to take a defensive role, protecting the west against potential assaults from the Allies. China and Japan did their own thing against the UK and I was content to leave them to it. I did ask them for some assistance in finishing the SU off as they had better access to Soviet territory in Central Asia and the Far East.

Having defeated France and the SU, my game plan was then to defend our winning position. The Allies had air and naval superiority and so taking the war to them didn't seem feasible. Unfortunately the Allies were able to focus and outfight my allies and there wasn't much I could do about this as SR is too slow to react to landings thousands of mile away. The Luftwaffe was able to react well to landing in Europe such as the first Italian campaign but I didn't want to send it to Japan or China - this seemed too risky and difficult to manage.

I didn't try to be a strong alliance leader and I didn't have the time for it and I prefer Freedom to Central Planning. The antics of minor allies like Finland and Hungary were quite entertaining and having fun is more important than winning in the most efficient way.
