monthly income question

Sometimes my monthly income doesn't seem to match the line item in the financial summary or budget. For two or three months it will be exactly the same, then it will be negative, then it will be slightly positive. I can't figure out if there is method to this madness. Is this supposed to happen?

Trade affect your monthly income.
Pirates, merchants lost or gained in cots affect it on a monthly basis.
Troops maintenance too. Lose 35.000 guys in a huge battle ? Great, less wages to pay...

I've seen this too, though I noticed it is the production income that seems to fluctuate. It stays at the same rate for over half a year, then loses 2 or 3 ducats for one month, after that month it gets the old value again.
Is there an explanation for it?
