Along with being a military history buff, I'm a spaceflight enthusiast. In late 1945, on an island near Cuxhaven Englamd, representatives from England, France, The Soviet Union, and the United States witnessed demonstation launches of Germany's V-2 rocket. I have absolutely no modding experience, but a wealth of knowledge and resources for manned spaceflight. The HO!-2 engine looks like a perfect way to simulate a race for the first moon landing , in real time , from 1946 until the present. Is this feasible? Anybody else thinking along these lines?

Hmm, should be easy to create. It's nothing else than the other secret techs we have right now. You would only have to think of some bonus for each tech step - and how it could influence the victory chances of one nation / alliance. Otherwise the techtree would be pretty useless.

So what would you achieve with the first satellite ?
With the first human in space ?
The first human out in space ?
And so on ...

Or perhaps you get oil......

Oil found on the moon :)

# Oil found on the moon!

id = ????
random = no
country = USA

trigger = {

war = { country = ??? country = POL }

I dunno! I just took this from the Danzig or war... I have no idea how to event script :(

It's a fresh and original idea, but I think not adeptable to HoI2.
A much better platform for the moon race is Civ4.

You don't have modding skills (neither do I), but do you at least have a concept, a vision what the mod should be like?
Thus far it's of course not very convincing.

What do you achieve by being the first man on the moon? In Vicky you could get a sh*tload of prestige, thus winning the game.
Plus it would be very boring with the capacity you can possibly have.
Say, you find a group of 10 people helping you, that wouldn't be nearly enough to invent completely new tech trees (what else besides space technology do you want to integrate?).

You would have to simulate all weapon techs form 46 to 75. Plus make it attractive enough to win the space race. How could you convince a player to research for around 15 years (!), only to get some moon-events?
I think most players would use the time to conquer the world instead.

So, if you're interested in getting this mod started, you might want to work on a real concept first.
This mod could be awesome, but it would have to be a major mod (imho) to be worthwile.
Good luck!

I think you see it a bit too negative seattle. For example he could join the cold war mod team, he adds the moon race and they the rest ;)
It would fit in the timeline so that should work.

And all that has to be done now is to find some juicy effects for the tech steps in space. Just VPs would be far too boring and ineffective, conquering the world just because one reached the moon too.
But you could create a "second satellite" evolution step after sputnik that would give some spy advantages for exampel. Surely there are more possibilities like that, it just needs some creativity.

And that was what I said, it would have to be (part of) a major mod in order be fun.
We're are talking about a scope of 19 years game-time (that's much longer than the vanilla-time. However, vanilla's 12 years are action-packed with the grandest war of all-time. That is enough to keep players busy and excited.
19 years of cold war and a moon race without a huge team that creates new tech trees, units, tons of events is impossible.
To join the Cold War team seems to be the best option for his idea.

I don't understand what spaceflight would be other than a series of events during the period. Facilities might have to be built, the Moon shot did cost a fair bit. But spaceflight has little to do with the military and economy as used in HoI2 - you wouldn't get anything back except VPs.

That said, look at the upcoming Doomsday expansion. As a suggestion It might be much more suitable. The Intelligence tab (need to spy on the other side's space program - you can't have a tense race without feeling the other side is close to success) and changed research tree might make it a better bet for this sort of mod.

And offtopic, just FYI, in case you aren't already familiar with it - any spaceflight enthusiast that hasn't played with Orbiter, should -

moonrace could be a cool tech tree for the post-war doomsday expansion mods that will appear!

So in essence events are called for?

Nothing to do with the military? Space-based weaponry could devestate entire cities in one shot! :eek:
