More and More Crashes

EU2 used to run fairly okay... sometimes I got the DirectX crashing thing where the screen would foul up on exit, otherwise problems were few.
Now it seems to crash more and more often. CTDs, sometimes even a BSOD reporting a Fatal Exception (forcing me to reboot, then on restart the screen res has been reset to 640x480, as with the DirectX crash). Run a game for 15 or more years without a save and a crash is all but guaranteed. I've tried defragging, but to no effect. Running v1.08 on a Win98, P4 3000, 512 ram, music turned off and with the avi_back trick.

I know you have tried some on this list already, but here is the full list for you.
1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

If none of that works then:

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

The dxdiag printout is very long indeed with a huge list of dlls, vxds and the usual stuff... however, I also just cleaned 496 files out of the temp directory, which might have something to do with it.

Which is why I only asked for some of it.

So did clearing the temp folder work for you?

Clearing out those files seems to have helped. I'm inclined to think any problems may be down to hardware, owing to the fact that my dual boot into Linux is giving me kernel panics, but that's a separate matter.
