Hey Folks, Following on from a thread in the bugs section about whole shifts being shut down when trying to change colonists positions, I thought it would be a good idea to make a new thread so we can share how we deal with this with each other. I will be using the PS4 controller layout (sorry XB folks but I dont know the layout for your controllers.) Also this will probably be a mini novel as I'm not very good at being concise lol.
I've taken to doing this 2 main ways. 1, Assiging residence and workplace straight off the passenger ship. 2 sifting through the colonists in each dome. Unfortunately atm I havent found a way to tinker with individual work shifts, but you can at least make sure only the workers you want are working a certain position. Neither do I seem to be able to set dome restrictions. ( I have followed a post in here's advice on this but none of my settings will stay set, and I haven't figured a way around it out yet.)
The first thing I'll say is if you can do this from the very first Passenger ship landing it will make things less messy later, but I spent a good hour last night doing this with about 60 colonists and finally got one of my games going the way I want. **IMPORTANT** save after each batch of colonists have been set. I moved 3 domes about last night and the game froze on me so I had to restart from the last save!!!)
1: Straight Off The Ship The easiest way to position your colonists the way you want them off the bat is the second the ship lands (at regular time speed!!!) zoom in on the ramp and let about 5 colonists run off the end of the ramp then pause time. Use the Square button (PS4) to highlight each colonist on the ground. From there, click R2 (right trigger) then use the dpad right button to highlight set residence. Depending on where you want them you can set them to a certain dome and residence. Once you do that, immediately highlight the set workplace, and do it. If you don't do both you can end up with a botanist in the farm dome but working in the electronics shop. (Be aware of how far from the domes you land the rocket...I haven't yet lost a colonist doing this but I have had the O2 warning pop up above their heads before they reach the dome when landing between 3 domes and having folks go to different ones. It looks like the shuttles wont pick these guys up until they've actually entered a dome for the first time, as even with hubs nearby the colonists still walk/bounce to their first dome from the rocket.)
2: In Dome This way follows the same method as off the ship except that you zoom into a dome and use the square button to highlight a resident. (you may need to speed up time until you can find a resident to highlight, but then pause again) On the info panel you will a 1/27 or such counter for the colonist in the dome. I suggest once once you've got one highlighted use the dpad then X to click the left arrow until you are on Colonist number 1 for that dome, then check and do whats needed for each one in turn. This just makes it easier to keep yourself on track with multiple colonists. Remember if you are doing this with both rockets and domes at the same time like i did last night, you want to let time pass for a while after each one so colonists have time to reassign before doing the next location, otherwise you're wondering why you only have 2 botanists in a dome when you just set 6 off the rocket there (they were still running from the ship lol.
Ok Folks, that's my attempt to share what little I can to help you enjoy the game more. It is a great game, but these little bugs can spoil it, or just make each play harder than needed. Please add to this thread if you can so we can all get the most from it.
I will ask here if anyone has any info on setting dome restrictions, I would be grateful. I have tried both the inner setting and the overall setting. It lets me make my choices. I hit Apply and it appears to take. I go out and look and something like a rover , come straight back and look and none of the settings have held. Any advice is appreciated.
Take Care
