I play CK, EU2 and other games with a couple of friends on a regular basis. 2 of us are on broadband and the other on DSL. In CK We seem to have a lot of sync problems because our crashes involve either one or both clients but not the host. CK crashes hourly on average with 2 players which is acceptable but in 3 player the crashes occur every 20 minutes or less making the game all but unplayable in 3-player. I have the best computer so I host, would it help at all for me to run in debug mode and post my debug logs?
It could be our connections but EU2 1.08 runs fine and crashes rarely with the same 3 players.

I'm no programer but maybe future games using this engine could have a checksum for each client and when the sums don't match the host resyncs with the clients?

Oh yea, we are using the CK june 3 beta patch
 
A group of us play CK multiplayer every week. We have a group of 7 or so people every week and play up to 5 hours. We usually crash an average of every 2 hours or so.

As host, remeber to turn off all unnecessary processes ("unnecessery" meaning anything Windows or CK does not criticalyl need to run). Examples: all updaters (Microsoft, anti-virus, etc), instant chat programs (ICQ, AIM, Yahoo! etc), web browser etc etc. Also, no players (including the host) should ever tab if the game is running (and the host shouldn't tab even if the game is paused) as that is IMO guaranteed to cause out-of-sync problems.

The summer 2005 game (played every day) runs pretty smoothly with 5-7 players, but with 10+ players there are more problems.

I shut down as many background progams as possible plus I turn off auto-update on all my programs. The things I won't give up are my software firewall and voice chat program "Roger Wilco"(RW).
I did have better luck in a 2-player game last night by turning off the "high cpu priority" option in RW. I hadn't done it before because I didn't think of it and RW doesn't seem to affect any other games in this way... including EU2. I'll let you know if this solves our problem in 3-plyr but it'll be a while since our 3rd is on vacation.

BTW - Just noticed how similarly my thread name is to one of yours Jarkko. Sorry about that, was unintentional.

CK is amazingly bandwidth intensive, too.

I have a small business DSL line and I can't host for more than 4 players (counting myself) without immense latency and crash issues.

I have a 1.8 GHz computer with 1GB RAM, DSL with 512 Upload 1 MB Download. I've been hosting for 11 players, of which a few were in America and the rest in Europe. Sure, the session was not too stable until I droped the speed to Slow.

To succesfully host CK means you need to turn off everything unnecessary (and I have also modded the sound-files and graphic files, so that the music.txt is an empty file when I play MP (no music played when playing MP) and the sfx folder is about 6 MB (regular sfx folder is about 28 MB), plus I have renamed the tiles.bmp file. Also, when the there is a big war (players involved or not), the speed has to be dropped (because troop movmenents, combat etc eat a lot of the host's resources).

Succesfully hosting for many people needs either a super-computer (which in this case IMO means 3+ GHz, 2+ GB RAM plus a 10 MB or faster connection), or fiddling a bit with the set-up :)
