I'm having a problem hosting MP games. I tried different setups, from saved games to GC, with 1 up to 6 people. The result is the same:

I host, everyone connects, the game starts. Everyone chats and plays normally but only for a couple of minutes. Then, I get network latency and my internet connection just stops working. The game does not crash.

When I try to use any application that connects to the net (like the web browser), they give me "web site not found" and "host unreachable" kinds of errors.

The only way to restore the connection is to power cycle the cable modem (unplug it for about a minute) and renew the IP.

I'm using a Motorola cable modem. My computer is a P4 2.26.

Does anyone else encounter this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?

arg. just what I needed, another MP problem. I hate those dammit :D
Solution: don't play MP at all guys! :p

ok. let's be serious:
1) make sure you have the latest drivers for your network card (the one connecting to the modem).
2) What is your operating system? Win9x? Me? XP?
3) About latency, it might not apply in your case but some people discovered that to get a successful game running when multiple language version are on the mix, the US needs to be hosting.
4) Make sure you have patch 1.05

5) I am guessing something... do you have a firewall installed by any chance? if so the easiest way would be to disable it.
6) if you don't have a firewall, it is possible your ISP has one or they have some kind of proxy installed and it is preventing you from playing... can you enquire about it to your ISP? See if they know something?

since you can play if you join, but not if you host, something is preventing people to reaching your computer.

It's not a firewall problem becauuse we can reach his computer; we just crash in the first few days.

"The game does not crash."

kinda contradicts your statement, no? ;)

still are you sure you don't have any firewall or proxy?

Actually I'm still using the driver that came with WinXP. I will update it and try hosting again today.

Windows XP Pro, all critical updates are installed.

Everyone playing has the NA version 1.05.

The firewall feature is disabled and no third-party firewall/proxy software is installed.

That is my guess as well. I will try to find out.

hehe should have been more specific.... It says "connection lost" so rather if you could keep on playing sp without the host (not that you would want to do that:p )

it's like some packets are lost along the way... highly unusual.

Quick question: are the two of you alone in playing MP or do you try with others as well? If so, can you try only you two, and only one of the others vs Dagrem, the host?

Do you all have the latest patches for your OS? Dagrem as so, but what about the other players? And latest drivers for your network cards/modems?

We have other players, but we tried just him and me. We got the same results. I have all of the most recent stuff and I am pretty sure that he does too.

yes he said so, but I was unaware of your situation. And if it is someone else and him?

And if you are the host and he is joining? any latency?

If someone else is hosting there are usually no problems. My connection died after I joined a game once, but that was (so far) the only time when i had problems joining. When I host, it's the same problem every time.

I haven't tested hosting much since I updated the NIC drivers, I'll do it this weekend.

Most likely reason...

In many cases you ISP actaully uses the same external IP address for multiple accounts and redirects them through internal IP hosting routines to the correct user. This requires considerably less bandwidth and doesn't cause a problem unless you're hosting a major traffic applicatioj - in which case packets can be lost. If this is the case then you really have no solution other than to find someone with a static IP who is also a non-shared IP in the subnet. In most people's cases this is hard to achieve. Failing that, play when traffic is low...not a good solution, but the only one that guarantees a high degree of stability...or try v-net at low traffic perionds (when it's up).

The playing times do effect how long before it crashes, but it crashes nevertheless. This has worked in the past, though I am betting you are correct about the IP. Thank you, I will try it.

I think that I recall reading a quote from Johan recently that 1.06 is expected to fix the source of about 95% of the MP crashes. That should help immensely although I'm not sure what other fixes are expected...for instance, I'm not sure if a fix has been found for the "xxxxx becomes Russia" crash.

Alas, that is the combat one and most likely will not affect my game play... I had planned to call in today, but I have lost my voice:(

Err...ummm....not sure if that's just a comment on the overall situation or if you're experiencing a new problem? Do you mean that you've lost your connection altogther?

I still have the same problem. MP still kills my connection, but other than that cable works fine.
Do you mean that now you can't establish an MP connection at all? Who is your ISP?
