My friend and I bought Darkest Hour on steam not too long ago and tried for about an hour trying to get into a multiplayer game. First we tried using LAN, which makes sense since we were on the same network, but that did not work. We then tested direct ip, which did not work either. So I told him to go home and we will try it that way. I hosted and he couldn't join through direct ip. So I had him host and I was able to join his game by using direct ip over internet.

My question is, why is it not working through these others methods? We both like to play Paradox games in the same room so we can discuss strategies and various other things. We've had no problems with EUIII or CKII (I understand this is not developed by Paradox, just published, but I'm just clarifying that we have never had any issues with these grand strategy-type games before using LAN). We tried everything with port forwarding, firewalls, GameRanger, etc. None seemed to address the problem, until we had to try it from different ip addresses in different houses. Why are we unable to find games under LAN, when we are clearly connected on the same router?

it is always same answer on that - firewall. Many cases happened like that, and final answer was always firewall (antivirus etc)

under LAN you need to enter internal ip (like 192.168.0.x)

We both turned the antivirus and firewalls off though, which I stated above. As for direct ip, I seemed to forget to try the internal ip when connecting, which makes sense so I'll need to test that next time he comes over. But why doesn't LAN searching simply work? Seems like a broken feature as LAN games need to be played under direct ip. I mean, typing in the ip address isn't much of a hassle, but if for LAN games when can't use the LAN option, I don't see the point of it.

in hoi2 (and i suppose dh) sometime it doesn't show game at LAN, despite it should be.
For example when we connected via hamachi in eu2, we saw LAN game. In HoI2 we didn't.

So by default i connect via direct IP (external or internal, despite the situation).

When i make tests and run two DHs at the same computer, i see LAN game without problem, yes.
