AFAIK it works generally but does cause crashes, and so should be avoided if possible til the next patch.

Anyone else seeing it not crash but not work either?

I have chatted on my LAN and it worked fine. Although their was no need of it seeing that we where all only a room apart:) Besides we like to hollar at each other, especially those more colorful phrases:D

Chatting does indeed cause crashes, steer clear of it except when essential. I doubt it'll be fixed in the next patch, being that Johan can't reproduce the behavior. So barring a complete rewrite of the chatting mechanism, this will persist.

To chat you press
then type something in and hit enter. To mute a player you just click or highlight their name in the chat menu. You can tell a player is muted if his or her name is shaded out.

f12 is for cheating, not chatting.

Ok, we have checked it recently and with the TAB key it actually works. Finally.

However, the handbook (or readme file) should be revised accordingly. On page 93 it states "shift+F12 = opens chat function for network games".

Well, it works on my machine just fine. Never had a problem. I always use Shift-F12 with success, except when it crashes the program. TAB also crashes the program with equivalent frequency.
