When trying to play the game in multiplayer mode with a friend from another continent (EU & OCEANIA),
we have extremely long save game transfer times that makes the game hardly playable - especially with the crashes that we experience and having to reload/rehost a lot.

things we have noticed:

- the bigger your save game, the longer the transfer takes.
Which leads me to believe it really is a networking issue.
We have all have a decent upload (5 to 20 Mbps) and download (50 to 100Mbps)
note: sending the save game via skype takes a minute while via the game client it would take 15min or even longer

- our latest game takes us +- 15 minutes to transfer a 180MB save file,
our latest attempt just had the transfer hover at 20% and then give up?

Things we tried:

- having different players host.
Depending on who hosts, save game transfer is somewhat faster but not how it should be

- sending the save game via skype/wetransfer and then put it in the save game folder
unfortunately this does not help, the game will just try to distribute the save game again via the loading screen and not look for the matching save game in my hard drive.

- check if the game had access through windows firewall, which is the case

Questions:
are there perhaps any ports/exceptions we could open in our router/modem to speed up the transfer

is anyone experiencing the same issue and have they found a fix?

thank you for your feedback

These are the Steam ports used:

Generally a blocked port will prevent play entirely, but certainly worth checking out.

I haven't seen other reports of that here, but you might try the MP forum.

If it turns out to be a general issue then a new thread in Bug Reports is the next stop.

I was just about to make a post about this same issue.

Save download speed in multiplayer lobby is horrendous sometimes. I have 100mb upload and most of my friends who play have at least 20-30 mb download yet the lobby doesn't seem to utilize even 10% of the bandwith.

- Is there any particular reason why game saves are not compressed?
- Sending savegame file through 3rd party and putting it in save games folder doesnt work, the players still have to download in game.

After 530 hosting lobby is very long and tedious.

Having this issue as well, I don't have a fast internet connection but can get download speeds of 2-3 mb/s .. however in connecting to a server it only seems to be downloading at around 200kb/s according to task manager.

Can take 20-30 minutes sometimes to connect to a server and this can't be circumvented by transferring the save through a third party and placing it into the save games folder which you could do in EU4.

When the save files can easily get in excess of 100mb this makes re-hosting rather tedious.
