Session 19 - November 1, 1939 - The Waiting Game

World Politics:

November 2, 1939 - Germany honored the MR Pact. Eastern Poland to USSR.
November 4, 1939 - Hungary joined the Axis and we are now at war with them.
1743982478091.png

We recaptured the airbase in Rostock and took out a Stuka Squadron.
Germany has 22 Air - 2 Escort, 2 Fighter, 1 Interceptor, 5 CAS, 6 Tactical, 4 Naval Bombers, 2 Transports

November 5, 1939
We caught an Infantry Division on its own and managed to destroy it. However, this is an uphill battle.
Germany is up to 106 Divisions, 79 Infantry, 8 Armor, 1 Motor, 1 Cavalry, 1 Mountain, 13 Garrison, 3 HQ

November 7, 1939
Our Armor in Lubeck managed to make it home. Lubeck is back in German hands.

November 10, 1939
We got another German HQ unit in Munster.

November 16, 1939
Waxed another German Infantry Division. We might have built a wall of rubble around Greater Denmark.

Artillery 25 - November 19, 1939
Light Cruiser 4.17 - HMS Hermione - November 20, 1939
Engineer 12 - November 22, 1939

39 days - Radar
39 days - Prototype Test
3 days - Ahead of Time
141 days total - March 23

Time: 48 days - Finally we were exact.
Cost: £125.28

Allied Research Projects:
F39-12 Perimeter Defense Doctrine - November 26, 1939
F39-13 Basic Medium Tank - November 30, 1939
C39-13 Night Strikes Doctrine - November 21, 1939
A39-10 Night Strafing Doctrine - November 4, 1939

Here is a picture of Greater Denmark.
1743992360963.png

Here are the forces arrayed against us:
103 German Ground - 75 Infantry, 1 Cavalry, 2 Motor, 4 Light Armor, 5 Armor, 1 Mountain, 13 Garrison, 2 HQ
Hungary - 7 Infantry

22 Germain Air - 2 Escort, 2 Fighter, 1 Interceptor, 5 CAS, 6 Tactical, 4 Naval Bombers, 2 Transports
Hungary - 1 Interceptor, 6 Tactical Bombers

We have:
92 Ground - 40 Infantry, 5 Motor, 6 Armor, 29 Garrison, 9 Militia, 3 HQ
220 Navy - 7 Carriers, 14 Battleships, 3 Battlecruisers, 16 Heavy Cruisers, 47 Light Cruisers, 72 Destroyers, 29 Submarines, 32 Transports
39 Air - 6 Escort, 3 Fighter, 11 Interceptors, 3 CAS, 3 Strategic, 10 Tactical, 3 Naval Bombers

We lost Poland, but it looks like we have a foothold in Greater Denmark. The Germans should have the forces to drive us out, but it is possible we have protected ourselves with a wall of rubble. There is a neutral zone of provinces where the Infrastructure is 10 to 20%. They keep filling that neutral zone with an occasional troop that gets annihilated.

We are not sure when Italy enters the war. We have moved much of our fleet in preparation. Something we are not prepared for is Germany suddenly rebuilding the KM.

As long as France is still in the fight you have a decent chance. You can grind Germany down slowly over time.

If France falls though...it's going to be a rough road.

France falling was what happened in my second HoI on very hard and that was still easier than historical.
The AI should get better at evacuating airplanes before losing an airbase.
Denmark in the war right away is making it a lot easier. We would otherwise have to figure out how to get on the mainland or face their entire army and LW.
We found a use for those Strategic Bombers!

Start of 1940 Force Comparison

Axis Ground Forces:

101 Germany - 72 Infantry, 1 Cavalry, 1 Motor, 4 Light, 4 Armor, 2 Paratrooper, 1 Mountain, 14 Garrison, 2 HQ
Hungary - 7 Infantry
Slovakia - 1 Infantry
109 Total, +8 Overall - They are +9 Infantry, +2 Paratroopers, -1 Motor, -2 HQ

Navy:
Germany - 1 Submarine, 1 Transport
Denmark in the war early gave us a place to force their navy out and crush them.

Air Force:
22 Germany - 2 Escort, 2 Fighter, 1 Interceptor, 5 CAS, 6 Tactical, 4 Naval Bombers, 2 Transports
Hungary - 1 Fighter, 6 Tactical Bombers
If they AI can smell an undefended Transport in range, they should have enough sense to evacuate their Air one hour before an Airbase is captured.

UK-Denmark Ground Forces:
96 UK - 42 Infantry, 6 Motor, 7 Armor, 29 Garrison, 9 Militia, 3 HQ
21 Denmark - 19 Infantry, 1 Mountain, 1 HQ

Navy:
225 UK - 7 Carriers, 14 Battleships, 3 Battlecruisers, 16 Heavy Cruisers, 47 Light Cruisers, 75 Destroyers, 29 Submarines, 34 Transports
8 Denmark - 1 Heavy Cruiser, 5 Destroyers, 2 Submarines
In this timeline, we managed to save all of our ships. HMS King George V is ready to return to service after getting mauled by Naval Bombers.

Air:
41 UK - 8 Escort, 3 Fighter, 11 Interceptor, 3 CAS, 3 Strategic, 10 Tactical, 3 Naval Bombers
France - 3 Interceptors, 12 Tactical Bombers
Denmark - 4 Interceptors
South Africa - 3 Interceptors
Canada - 8 Tactical Bombers
Australia - 5 Tactical Bombers
Put together, that seems to be a lot of air over Western Germany.

87 France - 75 Infantry, 4 Cavalry, 4 Armor, 3 Mountain, 1 HQ
Canada - 20 Infantry
Australia - 18 Infantry, 2 Cavalry, 6 Garrison
South Africa - 10 Infantry, 3 Garrison
New Zealand - 9 Infantry, 3 Cavalry
Based on this, Denmark might soon have Armor.

66 France - 1 Carrier, 6 Battleships, 1 Battlecruiser, 7 Heavy Cruisers, 7 Light Cruisers, 22 Destroyers, 15 Submarines, 7 Transports
Canada - 19 Destroyers, 6 Transports
Australia - 2 Heavy Cruisers, 3 Light Cruisers, 19 Destroyers, 8 Transports
South Africa - 7 Destroyers, 6 Transports
New Zealand - 5 Transports

Here is another look at Greater Denmark:
1744081106104.png

We were expecting to get pushed back, simply based on numerical strength. Germans have 101 Divisions against our Danish Defense Expeditionary Force of 30 Divisions. Denmark now adds 21 to make this 51 and we are still outnumbered nearly 2 to 1. They have to maintain borders and that makes the odds slightly better.

The Wall of Rubble might have helped. Denmark has a division retreating from Leipzig that should make it back to Wolfsburg. Gottingen and Madgeburg are pretty much destroyed, with 12.2% and 13.2% Infrastructure and that appears to make it difficult to trap units. Most likely, Denmark will get forced out of Munster.

It is surprising this picture is showing more territories than the last picture from one month ago.

War Tally up to January 1, 1940
636 - Manpower at September 1, 1939
+80 - 4 Months at 20 per Month
716 - Expected Manpower January 1, 1940
534 - Actual Manpower
182 - to account for

40 - 4 Infantry
30 - 3 Motor
7 - 1 Armor
8.0 - 3 Artillery, 1 SP Artillery
10.0 - 4 Engineer
2.0 - 2 Light Cruisers
4.5 - 9 Destroyers
3.0 - 3 Transports
5.0 - 3 Escort, 1 Fighter, 1 Interceptor
109.5 - Manpower put in Uniform

72.5 - Difference - So I guess the body count for 1939 is 72500 dead. Some of these are actually builds started as we wound down production before the start of the war and ramped up after. We will neglect this.

Here is the Finnish Winter War:
1744082574063.png

So far the Soviets have stolen one territory. The Soviets have a staggering 237 Divisions.
170 Infantry, 9 Cavalry, 35 Motor, 11 Armor, 11 Mountain, 1 HQ
Finland has 26 Divisions.

Finally, here is the war in China:
1744082796030.png

It is hard for me to tell right now how much progress has been made. I will have to check an earlier post. It looks like that is Post #104 from January 1, 1939. They have some extra territories and are slowly creeping south and grabbing the northwest pocket. The difference is 230 Divisions to 103.

230 Divisions Japan - 101 Infantry, 11 Cavalry, 57 Garrison, 57 Militia, 4 HQ
103 Divisions China - 54 Infantry, 5 Cavalry, 44 Militia

China has about two years or more to hold out. We are still not sure what happens when Japan does not formally join the Anti-Commie Pact with Italy and Germany.

We are also not sure when Italy is joining the war, with Denmark causing so many problems.

Will Luxembourg survive the war?

Session 21 - February 1, 1940 - Berlin is in Sight

World Politics:

January 11, 1940 - The Automedon Incident - Japan found these document to be very important.

Action:
January 1, 1940 - Snow day. So we have no plans for our aircraft.
January 3, 1940 - We took advantage of the weather to move some air around. This is kind of ironic, isn't it?
We now have 4 Tactical and 1 Bomber Group in Copenhagen,
2 Hurricane groups in Aalborg, 2 Tactical Bombers in Wilhelshafen
2 Dive Bomb Groups in France, along with 1 Tactical Bomber
January 4, 1940 - We moved a Bomber Group to Aalborg and a Hurricane Group to Wilhelmshafen.
January 10, 1940 - We moved the AT Brigade to Malta where we figure it will do not much.

January 22, 1940 - We captured Stralsund and Berlin is now in sight.
January 23, 1940 - 66th Destroyer Flotilla sunk 1 Truppentransporterflotille in Pomeranian Bay. We appear to have one U-Boat to hunt.

Production:
Engineer 14 - January 9, 1940
Hurricane 12 - No 28 RAF Fighter Group - January 11, 1940
Spitfire 4 - No 32 RAF Fighter Group - January 11, 1940

Infantry 44 - 59th Staffordshire Division - January 15, 1940

English Electric Company, Skill 8, Cost £2.32, Research 105
20 days - Modular Design
20 days - Platform Development
20 days - Sectional Assembly
20 days - Fracture Mechanics
46 days - Experimentation Process

Time: 99 days - Exact
Cost: £200.97

Allied Research Projects:
A40-1 Improved Destroyer - January 4, 1940

Policy Changes:
We have gone all the way Standing Army. We get a bunch of extra Experience and a penalty to gearing bonus. The most we can gain on time is 25%. Since we are making changes to our production lines, this will not affect us quite as much, and the penalty is offset a bit by some lower upgrade costs. It looks like this is at 85%.
1744160991600.png
Is there another set of changes we should be making to our Domestic Policy?

Here is Greater Denmark. Berlin is in sight.
1744168415917.png

We might get a couple of raids in or we might have to pull back to Wilhelmhafen to defend Munster. So far, Munster has been a no-man's land and troops entering often get slaughtered. Here is the ground forces matchup so far:

100 Germany - 71 Infantry, 1 Cavalry, 2 Motor, 8 Armor, 2 Paratrupen, 1 Mountain, 14 Garrison, 1 HQ
Hungary - 7 Infantry
Slovakia - 1 Infantry

100 UK - 46 Infantry, 6 Motor, 7 Armor, 29 Garrison, 9 Militia, 3 HQ
30 Denmark - 26 Infantry, 1 Cavalry, 2 Mountain, 1 HQ

We can field 32 in our Danish Defense Expeditionary Force (Danish Expeditionary Armed Force? Danish Expeditionary Armed Taskforce Headquarters?) Denmark has 30. So we are outnumbered 108 to 62 in a simple comparison We can take out the Garrisons to make it 94 to 62 and that's a fraction over 1.5 to 1.

I am assuming France has made no offensive moves?

This is usually why I invade Germany from France...at least then, France fills in defensive forces on the ground I take. Though it looks like Denmark is doing fine if it has 30 divisions of its own...

France is doing well. The Maginot Line is working exactly as intended! Actually, they are supplying Denmark with most of those Divisions. I suppose the other thing they are doing is providing a border presence. That means the German AI also has to maintain a border presence. This also applies to the border with the USSR. The French are also sending Bombers into Germany - and getting wrecked every time I see them.

Do you remember my last VH Campaign on HoI1 where New Zealand was the game's MVP? This game is all about Denmark. An honorable mention goes to the Danish Expeditionary Army Taskforce Headquarters.

February 12, 1940 - The USA starts to become aware of trouble brewing across the vast oceans and have started to prepare for war.
February 16, 1940 - End of the Finnish Winter War. The Soviets got what they wanted.

Action:
Our aircraft finally spotted only 2 Divisions defending Berlin. So here we go.
1744243624047.png
February 7, 1940 - Our Armor rolled into Berlin.

C40-1 Improved Encryption Device - February 6, 1940
A40-2 First Strike Doctrine - February 5, 1940
N40-1 Production Planning - February 10, 1940

I will pause the game right here and decide on a direction to move next. It's either east or west.
1744248612634.png

It is getting safer to just move the rest of our forces in Germany. They are down to 94 Divisions.
68 Infantry, 1 Cavalry, 2 Motor, 8 Armor, 2 Paratroopers, 1 Mountain, 11 Garrison, 1 HQ
Add in the Axis minors and that is a total of 102 Divisions, 91 if we discount the Garrisons.

We have 32 Divisions in Germany and Denmark has 36. We can go all-in with another 17 divisions for a grand total of 85. The odds will change to 91 to 85.

I wonder if it's the other way around - and I do not know what triggers France to change its AI. I am looking at files.....

The Danzig or War event gives France it's France_Poland AI. I am looking for more...
...Germany at war with Belgium triggers France-Germany AI, which also does us no good.
...Free France AI requires the existence of Vichy.

I have not quite decoded the requirements for France Offensive AI.

More that if you hold territory in Germany contiguous to the French land, then it will move troops forward to defend that land. This frees up your troops to be able to move offensively.

Once French troops move sufficiently in and away from the Maginot line, the AI usually starts actively fighting then.

It's still not great, but it's better than just sitting in the forts refusing to do any offensives at all.

Curious - were you involved in this Wiki article?

Executor made an excellent program to calculate research times, best team for tech etc. An updated version for Armageddon and Doomsday is available in this thread. It can be made to work with Arsenal of Democracy if you create a file called HoI2.exe in the AoD install directory and point the program to that folder.

Cabinet Changes and Promotions:
March 4, 1940 - We put Sir Thomas Inskip in charge of Armaments. He is an Air Superiority Proponent and we are not paying huge industry to speed up Aircraft Research. Had we been thinking more forward, we would have worked in more Aircraft Projects. With two projects going, we are basically paying 90 ICD per day of Aircraft Research. We also doomed our production for about 100 days. Given that we committed so much into Rocketry, we decided we actually have production to spare for projects such as these.

March 8, 1940 - General de Burgh, Skill 1, OG Trickster in charge of the London Defense Force.
March 8, 1940 - General Gordon Finlayson, Skill 1, OG Trickster in charge of moving some Reinforcements to Germany.

Here is the situation in Europe.

Germany has:
84 Land - 64 Infantry, 1 Cavalry, 2 Motor, 6 Armor, 2 Paratroopers, 1 Mountain, 8 Garrison
13 Air - 2 Fighters, 1 Interceptor, 6 Tactical, 4 Naval Bombers

What do we do if we win the war before Italy joins?

Cabinet Changes:
April 1, 1940 - We introduced Sir Alan Brooke as our new Chief of Staff. He introduces the Peoples War and brings our manpower growth from 0.67 to 0.83. For monthly manpower growth, we will call this an increase from 20 to 25. Somehow that actually works out to a 25% gain.

Here is the map of Greater Denmark:

We are suspecting the Germany is not going to declare on the Low Countries and Luxemburg is going to survive this war. This might stall the entry of Italy into the war. We are now up against:
70 Divisions - 53 Infantry, 1 Cavalry, 1 Motor, 6 Armor, 2 Paratrooper, 1 Mountain, 6 Garrison
11 Air - 2 Fighter, 1 Escort, 4 Tactical, 4 Naval
We might do better to move away from Poland and support central Germany, instead.

Stalin is a different story. I don't see how Germany can mount an offensive against them.
259 Divisions - 185 Infantry, 9 Cavalry, 40 Motor, 13 Armor, 11 Mountain, 1 HQ

Session 25A - June 1, 1940 - The Low Countries Enter the War

World Politics:

May 2, 1940 - Just when we thought it was never going to happen, it happened.
1744460592644.png
Germany declared war on Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxemburg. We have all of our troops in Poland and will be little help.
Belgium adds 24 Divisions to the mix, the Netherlands 15, and Luxemburg 1. Germany might have been gearing up for this the entire winter.

May 12, 1940 - Switzerland had another election, but Latin America did not have another coup.
Instead, Costa Rica had an election. They elected a Social Conservative government.

Action:
May 2, 1940 - There was not much Luxemburg can do. Their single division retreated. In Czechoslovakia, there is a single island where a couple of Danish Expeditionary Armed Defenders are bravely holding out against an onslaught of German Panzer, the 6th Mountain and 41st Division.

May 3, 1940 - The DEAD did not make it. We tried to rescue them, but we were short by about 6 hours. France started retrieving their Divisions for home defense and Denmark is down to 19 Divisions.

May 4, 1940 - The French defended Luxemburg for now.
May 8, 1940 - The west appears to be at a stalemate for now. The Dutch have recaptured Munster. The Danish appear to have driven the Slovaks out of their capital and we started attacking Hungary in Debrecen.

May 12, 1940 - We crushed a couple of trapped German divisions in Presov.
May 14, 1940 - Germany annexed Luxemburg.
Much later in the day, our tanks rolled into Presov and we made a long border between Greater Denmark and the Soviet Union.

May 15, 1940 - Our tanks rolled into Miskolc, but the Germans, fresh from their victory in Luxemburg, have counterattacked in earnest us from Leipzig into Cottbus. They had been previously running probing attacks. A few hours later, we found out this was also a probe, but with 6 divisions instead of 1 and 3 of their Panzer divisions.

May 18, 1940 - Denmark annexed Slovakia.
1744469856284.png
Who ever thought they would see this in a game of HoI? They picked up 19 points of Belligerence with that. We will see how they are with diplomacy.

May 20, 1940 - Armor 7 rolled into Budapest. German units have been moving east. So we will have to move quickly to avoid getting trapped.
While we were not paying attention, Belgium captured Cologne. It also appears France recaptured Luxemburg.
May 21, 1940 - Army 7 captured Pecs. The Britzkreig is on!
May 22, 1940 - Denmark annexed Hungary.
1744471359193.png
They now have 22 Belligerence, ahead of Germany, but behind Japan and the USSR.

May 22, 1940 - The Germans appear to have recaptured Cologne, but the Dutch captured Aaschen. We should activate a front there.
May 26, 1940 - The French now hold Cologne. The Germans have Munster again.

May 27, 1940 - We captured an open part of the Czech Line of Death in Liborec. This will help us set more traps.
May 30, 1940 - Recaptured Breslau. The real action is in the west. Denmark captured Kassel. They are one territory away from cutting off the entire German East Front. Our armor rolled into Brno.

June 1, 1940 - Never mind about cutting off the German East Front. They recaptured Kassel. still we were impressed that Denmark pressed that far.

We might have lost count of Destroyers for a while and might try to reconcile, but we have 81 of them.
21 DD1, 14 DD2, 19 DD3, 27 DD4. We can't seem to find any U-Boats to kill.
May 30, 1940 - We expanded the Malta Air Base to Size 7.

We will take a few hours break for lunch and stuff, then move on to the next Session.
