Today, several of my friends bought the game and I wanted to host a game, yet I am encountering some issues. I try to start a game with the method in the guide, yet it does work. Is this due to steam? Any assistance is appreciated.

We don't really know what steam does that could mess with the multiplayer.
The general tip is to copy the game out of the steam folders, in an independet folder like c:/game/DarkestHour/ and follow the guides in this forum, don't forget to update the game to the latest version with the patch linked in the techspport forum.
