Multiplayer Keeps Lagging Behind

Me and my friend are trying to play multiplayer, but can't get anywhere because the game keeps lagging behind. One theory I have is that cross platform multiplayer doesn't work because I use a PC and my friend uses a Mac. I just want to know if anyone has any suggestions to make multiplayer run better. Both our internet connections are good. I don't know if its a bug or the game just doesn't support cross platform multiplayer.

what are the specs of both machines. If his mac's GFX card are not up to spec, yeah it will lag.
