Hi there!

After playing a lot of vanilla game, I want to try some mods now. I was thinking of making a copy of the vanilla game folder and use it for mods, so the question is: is it possible to have multiple game folders on the same PC?

Thanks for your answers!

Great question! I await the answer on how best to do this as well. : )

If you want to mod the game, I highly suggest you familiarize yourself with BTML/ModTek.
With these tools, all the modded content goes into a dedicated "Mods" folder, while you leave the base game alone (and can always do a fallback to vanilla).
And since you have a "Mods" folder, you can also have more than one "Mods" folder, and you can rename them to choose which one is active.
For instance, if I want to play 3 different mods at the same time, I could do that. Let's say I want to play dZ CCC, RogueTech and my own mod interchangeably. I would then have 3 subfolders in my Battletech folder:
  • Mods_CCC
  • Mods_RogueTech
  • Mods_StarratS
When I want to play a certain mod, I rename that folder to "Mods". The game starts with that mod active, and I can load my game from the corresponding campaign.
(Beware there could be issues with custom skirmish mechs and lances that you would need to take into account.)

so If you do that, you would need to ensure that the save campaign is label accordingly to whichever mod you are playing correct? Otherwise, if you are not careful, one might try to load the wrong campaign.

Yes, 100% true, you would need to "label" or otherwise be able to identify the correct campaign, so you load the savegame corresponding to the active mod. ;)

I use the GoG Version, and there it's absolute no problem to have mutliple Folders.
Had this at beginning, but since i only play RogueTech (You can play an RogueTech Vanilla campaign if you want), i only have one folder.

You could create two or more folders in separate locations and create a Junction to map one folder at a time. For instance. Folders Mod1 and Mod2 on drive D:
Create a junction of Mod1 in the Battletech folder to replace the original Mods folder. (Remember to rename the Junction to Mods.) The game won't know the difference between the original folder and the new Junction Link that you create in it's place.
Nice Guide to symlinks.
