I start HOI2 and the game starts initializing the sound and then it just exits the game. I had to turn of the music. The same happens with Victoria,

Thanks for your help.

So if you turn off the music the game works fine?

Yes. And I can listen to music in Winamp

Probably some sort of incompatibility between the game's own music engine and your sound driver. What sound card do you have?

The soundcard built in my Gigabyte motherboard. The thing is that it used to work. Eventually I'll have to reinstall windows so maybe then it will work.

Or try update the drivers.

Not so fast.

If it used to work, and doesn't now, something must have changed recently. Did you, by any chance, recently install some application or system tray tool that deals with playing MP3 files or other types of music files? Because, if that program is permanently active, it can claim the music playback device within your directX environment. Making it unavailable for use by either hoi 2 or Victoria.

Driver update and turning off anything sound related doesn't work. Anyway thanks for the help.

i have one interesting but still frustrating problem regarding music.
i can't turn off the music and listen to sfx, if i increase volume of the music than i can hear sounds but music gets too loud,if i decrease it, all other sounds volume is decreased too, it's driving me nuts.

Try using the volume control from Windows itself. Usually it's available as a small speaker icon in the system tray.

Try regulating the various volume controls there to see if you can get a combination you feel comfortable with.

Sorry for reviving this thread but just so you know. I reinstalled Windows and music is running like it should, no problems any more.

Ok. Thanks for the update. Most likely some problem had cropped up in either your sound driver or DirectX in your previous installation. ;)
