So I decided to come back to the game after a break, which started before the new dome designs were added to the game. Taking a look at them, I realized the smallest dome isn't all that useful if you want a spire, but is a good starter dome. What I did notice, however, is the Trigon and Mega Trigon domes are possibly the best ones to use for a space-efficient colony: their shape lets you put them next to each other with the least wasted space and their sides are just the right size that a 2-hex gap between them lets you actually keep the entire thing a perfect triangle shape with a Mega Trigon in the middle. I know I'm late to the party and people probably realized this already, but to me it seems that the Trigon/Mega Trigon domes are designed specifically to get the most out of connecting domes and saving space if you can find an area of flat land large enough to get them set up.

What do you think? Is this a common belief and what kinds of colony layouts have you made with them?

If I'm not worried about having a spire in my first section I usually put down the smallest triangle dome for living quarters, Infirmary and Grocery and connect it to a Barrel dome that has everything else. Putting the triangle dome next to the rich metals let the workers run the extractor without penalty.

Yes, they're very useful for locations without a lot of space, and also very useful for challenges where you want to maximize efficiency as early as possible as they don't cost polymers.

Who told You that?
Why the shape of Dome could indicate the pros of working outside the Dome, different than from Basic Oval Dome?
There is nothing about that in description of Triangle Dome, so i disagree, until You will give me evidences.

They mean that the dome is smaller so it takes up less space, you can still put the basics in, and you don't have to worry about the penalty of working in another dome that applies to out-dome buildings that can only be reached by working "in" a different dome than the one the miner lives in. It was part of their "micro dome for housing and barrel dome for everything else" concept.

What I normally do is I look for a nice expansion spot where I can build a Trigon later that I know will have space for a mega trigon and two more trigons along the mega's sides, then build there and eventually expand to have the trigons be farming/service, industrial, and education/research districts more or less.

I don't see much difference between the trigon/mega-trigon and medium/mega domes. I generally use them for their aesthetics. The micro dome is great as an early child-only education dome and later as a loner-friendly dome that can be attached to megas.

The most interesting dome is the micro-dome (cheapest trigon). It has the lower consumption of water and energy and don't need polymers for maintenance (which cost you water to produce).
Since the last version, you can not close a dome without the buidings also closed. The micro-dome is very interesting to place your stearling / solar panels to protect them from evils dust which are the only catastrophes that you can not counter.
Thanks to its shape you can place them around the artificial sun wonder and fill them with solar panels.
