Hey guys, my install CD doesn't work anymore. When it gets to 79% it hangs for like 5 minutes, and finally gives me an error, "cyclical redundancy check" on the file data2.cab.

What can I do to fix this?

Check with Castellon. He's the resident authority on these types of issues.

Hehe, yup. Last night when I was deciding which mod to PM, just by taking a glance over activity it was pretty apparent that Castellon was the right man for the job. I gave him all the gushy details last night, so hopefully I'll find out today if I have a chance to get back in action.

Funny how that works... the game has probably sat on a shelf for the better part of a year. But then I bought Civ4... played it religiously for about 3 weeks, but then got so tired of the lack of military options that I got my itch back for HOI2. Looking forward to fighting a new winter campaign again. :D

Anyhow, we will see. We will see.

And it would seem that my post in the main forum was (in the words of homestar) del-teeted. :(

Here's the picture mentioned by Mr. Joel.

(edit) Hrm, I've gotten some complaints that what I'm asking is actually illegal, and ppl doubt I own the game. If the above pic isn't enough, I think I actually still have the original box somewhere. When I get off work I'll see if I can find it and post THAT pic up as well.

And just to prove my HOI'idness, here are a few proposition type write-ups I was working on months-and-months ago. I never did finish them b/c it was taking up way too much time, and I ended up giving up the game. Anyhow, if you'd like to see the depth with which I approached the game, you only need to
check
out
these
docs

Yeah Korny, I tried that, but when XP starts copying the data2.cab file it just hangs for like 5-10 minutes, and then finally gives me a CRC error, and stops copying.

Anyhow, this is really sad. I actually OWN the game, and yet I've gotten *no* response from tech support, or the mods. Seriously guys, what is more likely? That I'm trying to scam people to steal the game, or that I actually own it and I have a bad CD? It'd be easy to just scan the web and try to find the game as an illegal download, but I'm trying to do this as legitimately as I can.

Anyhow, is anyone out there willing to help? (if it's legal) I'd really, really appreciate it if someone could host the data2.cab file up, and then email me the download location? Puh-leez! (riddilnc@hotmail.com)

i´m really loking forward to that because i am having xactly the same problem but at 4 % and data 2. just a little scratch and all is over. fight for our rights, che.

I know that certain stores can repair a CD with a scratch on it.
G ask in your local computerstore, maybe they can help

There are also home scratch repair kits that you can buy. They involve putting a special paste or fluid upon the CD and rubbing it with the included cloth to even out the surface, thus removing the scratch.

I've also heard that as a last resort, toothpaste also works, but I don't recommend that. Never tried it, though.

You can also buy mechanical CD repairers. I don't know how well these work from personal experience, but I buy a lot of used stuff from a second-hand games store that uses one, and they all seem to come out looking brand new.

I'd recommend trying out the first option. Try a local music store, or even a department store- you should be able to find them for $5-10. I've saved a couple of CDs that were otherwise useless this way. The good news is that game CDs are usually a *lot* easier to repair than music CDs.

Of course, as Barkdreg mentioned, there are also stores that will repair them for you.

Good luck!

Unfortunately mine isn't froma scratch. The surface looks completely fine.

Anyhow, at this point I've given up trying to find a quick solution. I don't even care anymore. But seriously could someone from tech support contact me? I will MAIL YOU my bad CD.

Give me a break guys... all I want to do is play a game that I payed for.

Well, it is the weekend, so you should probably get an official response by tomorrow hopefully.

Send a email to florian@paradoxplaza.com Maybe he can help you

yeah, good point Gaute. Just b/c I'm around on the weekend clamoring for help, doesn't mean that there's anyone THERE to even listen. :p

Thanks for the email address, I'll fire a message off and see if I can get any help.

Hi guys, sorry, I have been on vacation and just walked in the door like 20 Mins ago.

First thing is to try cleaning the disk with Windex or eyeglass cleaner, then try again to copy the whole CD to the Hard Drive and install from there.

Hey Castellon, thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, I'd actually already tried that. I even used the special lens cleaner /cloth that I have for my eyeglasses. The physical surface of the disk looks perfect. It really seems like it's a media degradation issue.

Anyhow, just to give a quick update to this thread, I've actually been talking with florian through email, and he's really going out of his way trying to get me help. Big thanks to him for his work! Hopefully I'll be up and running before too long... I'm getting there, slow but sure!

If Florian is on the case then I will leave it to him. :)

Again sorry about the lack of responce from me because I was away, if you review the forum, you will see I never ignore anyone.
