Rise of the Habsburgs

This is my first AAR every so please don't be too critical. I hope to update it at least every other day.

In my game it is now December 1102. First I'll go over what has happen since 1066.

Started out as Werner Habsburg, Count of Aargau.

Things were very quiet for several years. His only son Otto was born in 1069 and a few years later a daughter Ida. Ida was later married off to the son of the Duke of Lombardy and is now Duchess of Lombardy after her husband succeeded his father.

On August 27th 1072 Werner was surprised to be suddenly be elevated to Duke Werner I of Savoie by the Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich I, Werner would be loyal to the Emperor of the rest of his life for this.

After fabricating a claim. Werner went to war and won the county of Neuchatel on August 18 1081.

Shortly after that Werner had his son Otto marry a good nobelwoman that gave birth to a daughter. Shortly after that Otto's wife died, so Werner then had Otto marry Elika von Babenberg, the eldest daughter and heir of Duke Leopld II of Osterreich.

After some arguements with his son and a brief imprisonment of Otto for heresey. Werner I gave Otto the county of Neuchatel on October 24th 1084.

A son was born to Otto and Elika. He was named after his grandfather Werner. Soon after Otto and Elika would have a daughter and another son.

Duke Werner I's wife tragically died in 1088 at age 61. Werner decided not to remarry right away

After fabricating another claim. Duke Werner I went to war and won the county of Bern on June 23 1092.

More tragedy struck when Duke Werner I's son Otto suddenly died at age 39 of his wounds he received from fighting for the HRE. Otto's son Werner succeeded him as Count of Neuchatel and now as Duke Werner I's grandson, heir to Savoie.

Duke Werner I, wanting to make absolutely sure that the Dukedom of Osterreich is inheirited by a member of the Habsburg family, married his son's widow Elika. Amazingly despite Werner I's advanced age (he was 74), Elika became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter. Which makes that child (Maria) not only the grandson Werner's (future Werner II) half sister but also his aunt.

Amazingly again at age 77, Duke Werner I knocked up Elika again. Unfortunately this child would never know his/her father as Duke of Savoie, Werner I von Habsburg died on October 16th 1102. His grandson inherited all of his realms as Werner II Duke of Savoie at age 15. It is now December 1102 and Werner II will soon come into his majority and rule outright. He is in line through his mother Elika to inherit the Duchy of Osterreich and when he has enough piety and money he could create himself King of Burgundy since he has 50% of the counties needed to proclaim himself King.

The Rise of the Habsburgs has begun!

My last AAR was a Ricky game entitled The House of Habsburg - I'm ashamed to say I never actually finished it.

I'm interested to see what you fate is in store for the dynasty. I wish you good luck with your game and I shall endeavour to follow your AAR.

Update 1103 to 1113

March 28th 1103: Werner II von Habsburg is betrothed to Ermengard von Zahringen, heir to the Duchy of Baden

September 12th 1103: Werner II comes of legal age and begins ruling outright.

April 1104: The new Count of Geneve, Ebbon, rebels after a failed attempt to imprision him for plotting against Werner II

June 1104: Werner II agrees to have his mother, Elika von Babenberg, marry the recently widowed Holy Roman Emperor. Elika is near the end of her child bearing days so there is little chance that the house of Habsburg will miss out on eventually inheriting the Duchy of Osterreich

January 1st 1105 is a happy new year as Ebbon Count of Geneve surrenders and is imprisoned. Werner II revokes Ebbons titles and lands which come under the direct rule of the Duke. The other nobles and vassals do not object since Ebbon was a traitor. Ebbon spends the rest of his life in prison. and dies a few years later.

May 24, 1106: Tragedy strikes as Werner II dies of Pneumonia. His younger brother Andreas von Habsburg inherits all Werners titles and is now Andreas I, Duke of Savoie.

October 3rd 1106: Andreas I is betrothed Ermengard von Zahringen who was previously betrothed to his brother Werner II before he died.

March 31st 1109: After amassing enough wealth. Andreas creates himself the title Duke of Upper Burgundy, hopefully a stepping stone to becomming the King of Burgundy.

April 4th 1109: Andreas I declares war on Eleonore, Countess of Bourgone to force her to become his vassal to his newly created title as Duke of Upper Burgundy.

March 16th 1110: Countess Eleonore of Bourgone surrenders and agrees to become a vassal of Andreas I Duke of Savoie and Upper Burgundy.

June 16th 1111: Andreas I comes of legal age and can rule outright.

April 14th 1113: Ermengard von Zahringen, heir to the Duchy of Baden, comes of age. Andreas I and Ermengard are married the next day. Unfortunately it is widely rumored that Andreas I is a homosexual. Will a Habsburg heir be produced from this marriage? or will the head of the Habsburg house eventually pass through his sister, who is in a matrilinial marriage, to his nephew? Say tuned for further updates.

1113 to 1130

This period was a fairly quiet time for the house of Habsburg and it's Duchy of Savoie and Upper Burgundy. No major wars were fought by the Habsburgs. It was a time of consolidating power, impoving local infranstructure and producing another generation of the Habsburgs. Despite the supposed homosexuality of the head of the house of Habsburg, Andreas, he was able to have 6 children with his wife. A major event would happen at the end of this time period.

Here are the highlights of this period for the Habsburgs.

April 4th 1115: Amazingly Andreas I has knocked up his wife, will it be a boy or girl?

November 3rd 1115: A daughter, Sofie, is born. The vassals all continue to hope for a boy as does Andreas I.

January 2nd 1118: Andreas I and his wife are expecting again. Will it be the long awaited boy?

August 3rd 1118: Another daughter, Romilda, is born. Will Andreas I sire a son?

February 5th 1119: Andreas I and his wife are expecting once again. Both are praying for a son.

September 7th 1119: Yet again another daughter is born, Adelheid. It is wispered that the Duchess Ermengard is cursed and will not conceive a son for the Duke.

November 6th 1121: Could this finally be it? The Duchess is now with child for a 4th time. The entire realm prays for a boy.

June 7th 1122: A Habsburg son is born! He will be named Otto after his grandfather. The succession of the house of Habsburg has been secured for another generation!

January 9th 1124: The Duchess is pregnant for the fifth time (boy is she a baby making machine). God smiles on the house of Habsburg and has truely blessed the Duke's marriage.

July 28th 1124: After fabricating a claim. Andreas revokes title and county of Bourgone from Leonard d'Ivrea. He gives up the fief willingly and no one objects. 5 counties are now under the direct rule of Andreas von Habsburg.

August 1st 1124: Duke Andreas I is named the Marshall of the Holy Roman Empire by the Emperor. It is an honor for the house of Habsburg to serve the Emperor in this way.

August 10th 1124: Another son his born. He is named Gerhard.

July 5th 1127: A sixth child is born to the marriage. Her name is Inge.

In the year of our lord 1130. Andreas von Habsburg, Duke of Savoie and Upper Burgundy, after amassing enough wealth, prestige, and piety with the Pope.

Has proclaimed himself Andreas I von Habsburg King of Burgundy!

Long live the King!

Dang it any way. The patch for CKII broke my saved game for the Habsburgs and I was doing pretty good too so this will be the last update.

The HRE had just fallen into Civil War in 1145, at first the Habsburgs stayed loyal to the Emperor but after it was clear he was losing. Andreas I, King of Burgundy declared war on the Emperor to gain the Kingdom's independence. I was just about to achieve victory when I applied the patch so now I can't continue. Time to start a new game I guess.
