(returning player) So I played Rome til 500 AUC. This is what I achieved and my struggles, along with my take and questions on the current mechanics.
First off, I struggled with getting Influence to do all the things that I wanted, which is fine for the most part. But when the AI (Characters) do stupid stuff that sets all your influence work back to zero, it gets very frustrating. (Looking at you governors)

Governorship: Governors have no clear logic as to why they do what they do for their policies. I try to pick characters based on stats, (higher religious for example), Statesmanship, culture, loyalty etc. But still they do other policies than the ones I want them to (which is Religious Conversion and Cultural Assimilation). And when I have spent 30+ influence recently to do this, and it gets thrown down the bucket especially when I’m low on influence, it's just incredibly annoying.

Characters: Characters feel very shallow. Even though characters can plot and have a powerbase that lowers loyalty (along with statesmanship) that gives the player many things to consider. Still thou the Characters feel ambitionless, with no clear logic as to why they do what they do.
Also, make the “make friend” option more dynamic and realistic. Currently, if you don’t focus 100% on the most expensive option every time, you will fail. Which is just completely stupid.
Also, why do powerbase have to be synonymous with disloyal? Having a really good, popular and powerful man in the Senate that is fanatically loyal to the government/state is a no no? (Pompey the Great)

Government: Of Course the Cursus Honorum is gonna come up lol. But to be completely serious, it just feels bland, especially when thinking of playing a republic. To make it feel more alive and “republic-ish” make the senate appoint certain stuff more often than they do. Like governors, Admirals, Generals etc.
I don’t want the feeling of “forgetting” all the characters in research and government once I set it up once, which happens a lot.
And btw I just couldn't culture convert anyone to be Roman. Before it was easy (too easy), now I don’t even know how to?

Trade: Have no real complaints about the system itself. But when trade gets cancelled and has to be remade every few years the micro just gets annoying. Perhaps let it automatically search for said cancelled trade goods to the closest available or something? Also, I have taken every province (except capital) on automatic trade, yet only like 2/6 of the provinces actually set up trade. Why? Doesn’t make sense.

Vassals: When playing with a decent vassal swarm the vassal mechanics from Eu4 is just a must. (I know it was scrapped/prolonged) but something very basic us much better than nothing while we wait.
Also have the option to diplomatically make alliances to become vassals (like you can in Eu4). It’s just strange that you cannot. Why does everything have to be “declare war” if not an event helps you out?

Missions: I would very much like to preview mission trees before I dedicate myself to one. Cause when I first start one, I want to finish it. I also want the option to “click out” of the mission tree to see if other mission trees are available. If not, having the option to “abort mission” becomes obsolete cause you don’t know if you can even choose another mission.

Other than all these points, I overall really enjoyed the game and are expecting to play it a bit more :)

I've pretty much learned to let go when it comes to govt. policies, and only change them if I need to do harsh treatment to prevent rebellion. It all falls into place eventually. I do largely agree with your points overall, though.

You can. Target needs to have 100+ Opinion of you. Its in the "influence" tab.

If you’re strong enough you don’t have any problem with diplo vassalising them, even without any additional diplo reputation, just 100+ relationships and that’s it.

I‘m trying a tall campaign with Heracleia Pontica right now and to my surprise I have to admit that it’s fun. It made me see the character mechanics in a new light; from a barebone nuisance to a fun way to micro your realm without dealing with unhappy influentual characters, civil war risk, or even a shortage of PI.

Of all the nations to go tall with, you chose the one that can form the Achaemenid Empire?!

Well, my understanding of playing tall includes expansion through vassals and roleplaying as a benevolent overlord. Though I do plan on integrating them eventually just to get the achievement, otherwise I would just keep them around until the end.

To Diplo vassalize I want to add, that if you have a certain tech from the poratory tree (1 or 2 after the Theater), you have a chance of guaranteed tags becoming feudatories.

Could not agree more with OP. Internal politics still feel so bland and in no way I think it represents well enough the political atmosphere of the Republic. I'm currently playing a campaign as Rome too, Very Hard difficulty, and I can't stop thinking about everything being too shallow, from the Senate to character interactions. Indeed, I think I have never cared about any of the characters, something that is unconceivable when you play CKII for example.

As for Governors I tend to fill them with younger candidates, so I can get a stable policies for decades. Not just 5-10 years.
Me too.
High loyalty, low power base and young.
If the AI can't be trusted to make a sensible choice of policy then it would help if the policy stayed after the Governor has changed.

TRADE
The only other Paradox game I have played was HOI3 and I don't understand either trade system.
Governments don't micromanage trade deals to the degree represented in the game.
If a shop in Germany wants to buy Raspberry Jam from a maker in Yorkshire it isn't the Chancellor of Germany who phones the UK Prime Minister to to order the Jam.
Governments do: Set taxes and tariffs. Embargo nations they don't like. Restrict goods that are politically sensitive. That's what should be represented in game.

VASSALS
As I understand it from watching YouTube a standard Roman army had 4 Legions: 2 Roman and 2 from Allies. Commanded by a Roman General.
The system we have now where forces from our vassals run around like hyperactive toddlers at a Christmas party, filling the screen where the action is with useless info and wasting manpower in battles they can't win and you can't help with because they filled the screen with useless info so you didn't know it was happening until after it had happened, isn't working.
I think it would be better if we had direct command over our vassals or could merge them into one of our levy's to create something like a Roman Army.
In HOI3 you can give your allies objectives; for instance as Germany I could make capturing Corfu an Italian objective. That would also be useful in this game, the ability to give a vassal an objectives like defend or siege City 'A' while I get on with other things.

I agree which is why I find end of missions are good points to save my Games so I give names like "Unseat Umbrians" and "Crush Samnites" to my saved files.
I also save before I choose a new Mission using the filename "New Mission" so that I can reload the game and see all the options to find the best next mission for me.

some missions can be - for some reason - be finished/aborted and be retaken immediatly after again. Some have no penalty excluding the 20 year wait.

But what are the logic behind which mission trees that can be immediatly retaken? Is it DLC related missions? (would have made the most sense)
I know "the matter of Italia" as Rome: I didnt own the silands yet and had the vassals. I could just take the fabricate claim mission and get the free buffs on Aternum and Stab and just retake....
The Hospitable Sea (needs Magna Graecia) can be aborted for no cost, but cooldown of 20 years.
AL "Matter of XXX" can be aborted for no cost if not yet started/finished any mission; cooldown of 20 years.
Some others, dont know by heart.
