After installing EU on my Compaq 5700T (500 MHz, 128 MB RAM, Savage 4 Pro graphic card) it just doesn't start! I've tried to reinstall EU several times, trying different versions of DirectX. (I'm now on version 8a.)

I can sit back and watch the pre-game-movie, but as soon as it is finished i'm suddenly returned to Windows! What's up???

I've also tried freeing all possible resources by killing all other programs, except explorer and systray, but nothing seems to help. I've also patched up to EU 1.10 nordic version... (Bought the game in Sweden.)

Please, please, please... Anybody got any ideas???

rename the AVI folder to AVI_OLD (it's in your game directory).

Well... I've tried that now, but the game only bugs out even earlier, as I don't get to see the AVIs before I'm back to Windows!

When starting EU, I get a black screen for approx 2 seconds, than I'm back to the desktop!!!

EU1 will only play in 800 x 600
Is your card having problems switching resolutions?
Set the desktop etc to 800 x 600 (16 bit) and try again.

Have you tried running it without the music via the Start/Program group?

Hmmm... Maybe you're on to something... I've seen in the "Running problems" thread that there is supposed to be an icon that reads "No Music", But I don't have such an icon!

The only thing under Start->Programs->Paradox is "Europa Universalis", and under that there is three weblinks, one help-manual and the actual EU-shortcut. Nothing else!

I've not seen the "No Music"-icon anywhere, nor after any reinstall. Do I have an installation problem, you think???

For the no-music icon, you need to download the latest patch 1.10 (for EU 1). You can find it when clicking on "Downloads", at the top of this page.

But but but... I've already installed the 1.10 patch! (several times!) Is there any way to make sure the patch is in place? Modification dates on certain files or something?

the EU - no music icon apparently disapeared with 1.10.

You will need to edit your shortcut and add "no music" at the end of the command line "C:\program files\...\EU.EXE" no music .

No good that either. The command line I tried is '"C:\Program\Paradox Entertainment\Europa Universalis\europa.exe" no music'.

I guess the different name on the exe is just because I have a nordic version (In your quote it's 'EU.EXE').

As the game doesn't even start, I can't make sure the "no music" option is valid, but I guess it is.

Sigh... / Brob

the command line should be correct.

could you post your entire config? (sound card, cd-rom, etc.) For now, I have Compaq and Savage graphic card, but I'll need the rest to be sure about your problem...

Ok. Here goes:

Compaq DVD/CD-ROM 114 (E:)
IDE R/RW CD (F:)
S3 Savage4 Pro 16 Mb graphic card
Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 128 sound card

If you need more info on the DVD/CD or the R/RW CD,please post how to find that info...

Thanks / Brob

does it run without the patch?

it looks like a copy protection problem to me...

What is the publisher's name on the box?

I get the same problem with or without the patch 1.10. Paradox Entertainment is the publisher. But I've managed to install the game on my work laptop, and there it works fine!

Paradox is the developer.

Look for the words "Strategy First", "Blackstar" or "Koch" etc on the box.

Hmmm... Nope! Can't find any of them on the box! The small print on the back says "Published and distributed exclusively for Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland by Vision Park Entertainment". (I thought, incorrectly evidently, that Vision Park was the developer).

Anyway, as I said, the game installs on my notebook at work! So I guess there is some sort of mysterious mismatch between the game and my specific computer setup (HW or Software)... That sucks! What to do???

look at the "support option" thread, and contact Vision Park entertainment, they probably put some form of copy protection on the cd, and you'll need them to bypass it. As I am unaware of what exactly they used to protect their cd, I cannot help you :(

But if it was a copy protection of some sort, how come I can install it on another machine? (It's the same CD!)
