On 19th November 1085, Stjepan Nemanjic (1039 - 1085) died old, and 17 year old Aldimir became the new count of Naissus. He got the bad news while fighting in Adrianopolis in service of the Emperor. During his stay in Naisssus in 1086, he got a daughter Jadviga and appointed Gryd Lazarevic, a wise tactitian, to be a new marshal. Old and more and more experienced steward Petar Mrnjavcevic continued to serve the court faithfully. However, in February 1087, bad new again reached count Aldimir, continuing the Adrianopolis campaign. His wife Klementia died in labour and child was lost too.
Having a clear decision to secure new territories for his dinasty, Altimir married with Klementia's younger sister Wulfride von Zaehringen on 10th October 1088.

In 1089, old and prestigious steward Petar died. His position was held by anonimous noblemen until Aldimir's daughter Jadviga finished her education and turned out to be midas touched in 1102. In order to keep Jadviga on the court, she was married to Gryd Lazarevi, giving him son Radislav.

In 1091, Aldimir's brother Mihajlo, brilliant strategist and new marshal in the county, was after long negotiations with Dmitar Zvonimir duke of Slavonia, married to Hiciela Trpimirovic, Dmitar's only child.

However, although Mihajlo and Hiciela got a strong and beautiful baby Damjan in 1096, Hiciela's father Dmitar was not fond of giving his provinces to Nemanjic family. He changed the succession law to Salic Primogeniture in order to secure that his nephew, Ljudevit Trpimirovic become a new duke of Slavonia.

The only hope for expanding Nemanjic real was Aldimir's son Smilec, born on 4th. October 1091. Contrary to his lazy father Stjepan, count Aldimir (whenever he had time between several military campaigns serving the Emperor) took an active role in uprising his son Smilec. He encouraged him to freely fight with other kids, sent him to monastery to develop his intruige skills and talk with him a lot about heathens and unbelievers. Smilec turned to be similar to his father: cruel, proud and zealous.

Finally, on 22nd February 1103, Smilec Nemanjic inherited his grandfather Herman duke of Kaerten and Verona. Domain with 4 vassals, 3 of them were somehow dissloyal.

Both Aldimir and his brother Mihajlo got several more kids, daughters and son, some of them bastards, but most of them had poor health and died while babies. Such a cruel destiny affected brother Mihajlo a lot, pushing him into a severe depression. His only surviving son Damjan showed talent for all disciplines and was kept in the court to continue his education.

Couple of nice pictures in there.

county of Naissus 1084 - 1104 ; economy and politics

Small county of Naissus was fastly rising up from dark and chaotic middle age. Improved farming equipment, increase of chicken and goat stock, opening of salt mines and sawmills stabilized the yearly income. Aldimir erected court of justice in Naissus and royl posts in several smaller towns in order to regulate rights and duties of burgers and nobility. That lead to the spread of business contracts and system of promissory notes. In order to celebrate his wise rule, Aldimir organized a great hunt in 1094, inviting most prominent counts and generals, he was fighting with during the Adrianopolis campaigns. Spread of Aristotelian logic, clerical celibacy, ascetism and scholastic marked the cultural and spiritual environment. The most prominent clerics were bishops Daniil Mrnjavcevic (died in 1083) and German Vukasin (died in 1104).

Concerning the political situation in Europe, one of the most important events was the corronation of Vladimir Rurikovich (charismatic negotiator and the most powerful landlord in the Empire) as the new Emperor on 22nd May 1085. His rise to power was followed by two wars against William de Normandie, king of England, in order to gain recognition and control over Adrianopolis. Aldimir Nemanjic and his brother Mihajlo with about 1000 men showed a great courage during the battles against Englishmen. Finally, Emperor Vladimir got Adrianopolis in 1099 after the second war.

In the rest of Europe, Rudolph von Rheinfelden, duke of Swabia, separated from German kingdome of young Konrad von Franken. Later on, king Konrad was involved in Zadar conflict against Croatian ruler Vladimir Trpimirovic.

The northern neighbour, Hungary, under the rule of king Lorinc Arpad was heavily defeated by the tribe of Pecheneges, lead by Kabuksin of Belgorod. Hungarian domain was reduced and even split into several independent duchies.

Finally, Christians in Spain were fully defeated and Nuraddin, emir of Mallorca, controled the most of the peninsula.
