Simple topic, something I think people could be concerned/annoyed about, and I just want to mention this potential gripe we may have so the devs can make sure this problem is not in Stellaris:

The character limit. (I am talking about letters, not people "characters").

I have been hyping a lot over Stellaris, and have been planning my glorious human master race empire.
Xenophobic, Militaristic, Collectivist, Spiritualistic etc.
And I want to name them the "Holy Terran Imperium".
What I really DO NOT want is to start typing the name, and the following happens:

"Holy Terr"
Or even worse:
"Holy Terran Imperiu"

And that is it. Because the character limit on what I can name my Empire is too damn small.
So I am begging you Paradox, please make the character limit on naming stuff meaty.

Please. Pretty Please

Pretty please with a cherry on top. :D

I agree wholeheartedly, a big part of the fun of creating your own alien species is to give it long and incredibly hard to pronounce names... don't deprive us of this Paradox! :p

Whilst I can't say if there will be a limit to the maximum characters I can promise you that it will not be as bad as old school high score lists!

I don't think you will have this problem. There was not such a harsh limit in the Nation Designer or Ruler Designer or the Customizer in CK2 and EU4 ;)
There was on the Nation Designer until it got patched. Couldn't make names like "Western Roman Empire" and "Eastern Roman Empire" for a while. They fixed it though after it was complained about.

And now memories of AAA is returning... haunting my mind with the terror the limits used to inspire... and the utter lack of imagination everyone displayed because they hated them so much. :p

That is ofc our intention that you should be able to name your stuff whatever you want. With that said the interfaces will break badly if you write a short novel as you empire name, so we probably have certain limits, and clamp stuff when they don't fit in the interface. "This is Rikard's Awesome Epic Empire" can be clamped to "This is Rikard's Awe..." .

If you don't support the starship name: Inevitably Successful in all Circumstances or some of the longer Culture ship names I'm cancelling my preorder.

The character limit is going to be between four (!) and twenty?! The United Federation ...(of Planets), The Romulan Star Emp...(ire), and The Empire of the Kn...(own Universe) are not amused!

Culture ship names are literally the best. I similarly demand full support for the Frank Exchange of Views and the All Through with This Niceness and Negotiation Stuff.

He means that it depends on place. For example if you get an event titled "Giant schoolboy-driven robots rampage through [country]" they could cut the title. Or in special lists with limited width. You will still see full name on map, on tooltips, diplomacy and event messages.

The way I understand it, a lot of the suffixes will be automatically generated.

So if your people are the Ugnogs and they happen to be a religious capitalist semi-democracy, they will be named "Holy Ugnog Commonwealth" (or something similar, maybe you can pick from a list of options) and shortened to just Ugnogs wherever the full title would break the text. Kinda like Civ does it.

It would allow for long, fitting names without breaking the character limit

Militarist implies autocratic, autocratic implies hierarchy. Hierarchy =! Collectivist
Unless we are talking about political collectivism, which should be called public ownership instead.

More on-topic:
The Holy Terran Imperium is neither holy, terran, nor an Empire!

Heresy. to doubt the holy Terran Imperium is heresy.

On a more serious note hope Paradox finds a way to make this a non-issue.

This doesn't sound that difficult at all--just have each tag record three customizable strings: TAG_LONG_NAME, TAG_SHORT_NAME, and TAG_ADJ.

For example:
gao_long_name: Democratic People's Celestial Empire of the Great Gao
gao_short_name: Great Gao
gao_adj: Gao

For the few windows/instances where super long names can fit, reference the LONG_NAME; in other situations use SHORT_NAME by default. There, that wasn't so hard!

One other thing I want to mention is in regard to prefixes and suffixes; while I really like the idea for AI controlled nations, eg; if for example there is an AI nation called "Tezhnid" and it starts off with a monarchy/empire form of government, then it will be auto-called, for example, the "Tezhnid Empire". But then if a rebel faction takes power and turns it into a republic, then it will be renamed to the "Tezhnid Republic".

While this is a good idea for the AI, I hope players will be exempt from it and instead be able to name our nation before the game starts and be able to rename it while playing.
The reasons why is because if I call my nation the "Holy Terran Imperium" and pick a monarchic government type and then start the game, I do not want the game to call my nation the "Empire of Holy Terran Imperium".

I also want to be able to rename my nation while playing, both for fun, but also in case I change my nation's government type. If I am the "Holy Terran Imperium", and then change to a republic, I want to be able to rename myself the "Holy Terran Republic", for example. But on the flip side, perhaps people are RPing something similar to North Korea's government, where they are a dictatorship/monarchy, but call themselves "Democratic".

Hopefully nothing will stop me from creating the "Swedish Empire" in space! SVEA RIKE

Will we be able to actively rename our empires? For example if my Great and Bountiful Human Empire falls to shambles and then I claw my way back to glory, renaming it to the Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire.
