I did a forum search and couldn't find any previous threads on naming units in CK. Naming units in VIC and HOI was one of my most favorite features. The fact that you couldn't name units in EU2 was a major misfortune IMHO. In fact I spend a huge amount of time/effort in VIC/HOI naming units and divisions because I like doing it so much (I know, I'm a little wierd :D ). I have stacks of paper keeping track of all my unit designations for HOI/VIC for all my games scattered around my desk (now you know I am really crazy ;) ). Does anyone else enjoy this as much as me?
Anyway, does anyone have any information on whether we will be able to change unit names CK? I think it would be really cool if you could rename your units......."The Frankish Horde"........"The Royal Army"........."1st Army of the Crusade"......just a few names that came to mind. I would much appreciate it if anyone can enlighten me on this matter (the screenshots make me lose hope :( ).
Thanks

By the AArs the regiments are named after the province they are called up from and the army bears the leaders name. I don't remember anything being said on whether they can be renamed though.

:( I suspected as much. At least the names appear a little more appropriate than EU2. I always hated my 60000 man army being called a "Regiment" in EU2. The regiments in CK (from the screenshots) look at least a little more appropriately sized. The system of automatic naming is not soo bad as far as I can see also.

I can definitely live with regiments being auto-named after home province and armies after their leaders. But of course being able to change the names would be a nice addition.

It should be like in Vic. We should be able to rename an army as we wish. I want to call my army that will land in Egypt, Defenders of the Holy Catholic Pyramids.

Historically speaking, I don't think most armies were named. Specific names for units beyond ad-hoc stuff like "the men from Salisbury" or "the Black Prince's army" isn't really necessary until the appearance of permanent standing armies in the early modern period. Except of course for royal guards, knightly orders and other such special cases.

Read the holy words from Johangod "This is a game, not a simulation". So, naming units would be really cool despite being ahistorical. Remember the fact that the AARs are made with beta versions, so, might be added. In Two Thrones the units can be named?

I believe that in CK it will be absolutely vital not to rename regiments.

There were no standing armies in the time of Crusader Kings, so naming them would be a bit phoney. I mean "That Bunch That Was Called In March But Will Go Away By The Time Of Harvest" is not very epic. ;)

But it would be funny. :D

Thanks for the replies guys. I think that this will be an absolutely great game even if you can't rename your units. It makes more sense that you can't rename your units in this time period anyway. :)

Meaning it is very important to know where each regiment is from?
Yes.

A regiment belongs to a province...not a ruler. You may have read elsewhere that you can't shuffle men between regiments, meaning that if you levy the Province X Regiment for your war then it's forces stick together through thick and thin until you send them home. Thus you need to know where "home" is at a glance...

And there are other reasons... ;)

Thank you very much for enlightening us. It can live without being able to name my units, especially if the unit names will make sense in game terms. Although I loved EU2, I hated how every nation had a "Gunthers Band' etc. It seems like CK names will at least appeal to you senses. I can't wait to see what the "other reasons" are..........

I can definitely see why renaming could cause grief to a player who was not careful. However, generally I'd like to be able to add flavor while preserving information, and only hurt myself if I mess up.

Which perhaps brings us to the "other" reason: in MP, if I rename my army I could deprive my opponents of vital information about the nature (and probable loyalty) of my troops :D

Bah. What I really want to know is whether we'll be able to create orders of knighthood (like England's Knights of the Garter) and if possible name them. I don't know if there's enough precedant historically to justify it, but I'd love to, after claiming the High Kingship of Ireland create the Fenian Knights to lead my bold crusaders into heathen countries, like England :p

After reading Mettermck's AAR, there definitly needs to be some means for renaming units. Several of his armies during the crusade were 'Anonymous Commander's Army.' This is much to similiar to Gunther's Band out of EU2.
