Hello long_fella

Thanks. It's not difficult to engage with such a friendly forum.

I have "treat detections as hostile" on for that scenario (and most others). All subs are enemies. If you don't, just mark it as hostile manually. Sometimes I ID it, sometimes not, that depends on how close the sonobuoys are. The southern one can often be IDd on the sonar array from the Astute sub.

The northern air base gives an Orion range to come in and drop a torp or two if the sub is already detected. Yes, it is difficult to juggle the tankers; this scenario is very much up to those two Poseidons.

Thanks :).

That makes perfect sense. Though, perhaps, not to somebody who has just run a scenario where "unknowns" may not be hostile (ie airliners) ;-). I'll probably / hopefully ace it tomorrow, but I think my observations as to how it plays out stand...

That said, I would've thought it was safe to assume any unknown sub surface contacts are hostile in this respect. I highly doubt any allied nations would be sending submarines into an area that is quickly developing a shooting war without advising their friends, so it's safe to assume anything you detect that high command (i.e. the player) doesn't know about is hostile. Air contacts are a different kettle of fish. Just my two cents.

It may have just been luck, but I found this mission to be really easy. I picked up the southernmost sub on passive sonar from my sub (it got REALLY close), and I spent a long time emptying all the torpedoes from my ASW aircraft (about 75% of them missed). By the time I had finished with the first sub, a helicopter had just reached the starting location of the north easternmost sub, and dropping a few bouys in the area found it really fast.

IIRC there was a Russian AWACS aircraft to the far north, which I was able to kill pretty fast which really gave me a lot of breathing space from enemy aircraft.

Gah, pantomime rage moment.

Had splashed the Ruskie AWACS, had killed the first sub, had killed a load of T-50s, and hadn't lost a unit (yet, no doubt some of my bingo fuel F-35s chasing after a bingo fuel fuel-tanker, when there was a full one next to them were going to crash), had located one of the northern subs and had it covered in sonar bouys, and was 20 mins from having support there for multi-bearing attacks.....

When I noticed that I couldn't see any of my friends on Steam.

So I closed Steam.

Which closed NWAC.

Doh!

I had to try this one a couple of times:

First time the southernmost sub sunk my sub without me finding it :eek:o

The next time i found the same sub with mine, but got confused when my torpedoes seemed to vanish when i lost detection (especially since they weren't showing on the battle log). I'm working under the assumption that this was a coincidence and my torps just happened to run out of range at the same time as the loss of detection. I'm not keen on them not showing as missed/expired on the battle log though.

Third time i just ran out of time getting to the second sub, but i managed it on the fourth! :)

On the note of torpedoes, why do they only show a time-to-target when running on bearing-only? As soon as they acquire a target the torpedo continues running but the timer goes blank. Surely it should be the other way around, give me a time-to-target when it actually has a target? :p

yep same here I just dropped bouys 3 ea in the target areas, in fact I didnt even have to engage the awacs, just scared it off with a missle launch and did the same with 2 incomming fighters then it was over, been nice to finish em off though.

Damn, im really finding this mission hard! my course of action is usually:
try to find the first sub (south one) with my astute, and the poseidons, i send the 2 fighters groups that are already out after the ruskie awacs, but their missles ALWAYS miss....

while this is going on, i mass launch all my orions to find the north subs, but ive never actually found a second sub.

i dont use helicopters to be honest, they seem to slow for me...
