Hello there!

Right after the launch of the game me and some others have started a succession game. That means that everyone plays a king during his entire reign, but passes on the save-file as soon as his character dies. That way we try to get a more realistic experience. Kings will not be able to continue their policies after their deaths f.e. :)

We already tell eachother a short story of the kings reign when we pass on the game, but we also want a more detailed story. And that story, we will bring here! That way non-participants will get the chance to learn about the (fictional) history of Navarra!

The actual AAR will be posted in separate posts in this thread.

The list of participants:
* Darrigan (King Antso IV, d. 1099)
* TMA_Cool (King Fernando, d. 1142)
* Archam (King Antso V, now playing)
* Furga
* Olvirki

The reign of King Antso IV (1066 - 1099)

It's 1066 and we find King Antso IV of Navarra reigning in his castle in Pamplona. Antso is a member of the large Jimena-family, the family who provides all current kings of the christia Iberian kingdoms.
The kings of Aragon, Leon, Castille and Galicia are all his cousins.

Antso knows the christians are in a dangerous position. The muslims are very powerful and occupy the largest part of the peninsula. Fortunatly, they are not united under one leader. But the christians are neither.
Navarra itself is one of the smallest (except for Aragon) christian states in the area. If it wants to survive, it will need allies. A lot of them.

As I already said before, all other Iberian rulers are Antso's cousins. So he already has quite some allies, but that's not good enough. All Iberian states might one day fall prey to the muslims, so it would be wise to have some non-Iberian allies as well.
Antso has quite some brothers and sisters, many of whom are not married. To ensure foreign support, Antso decides to marry them off to mighty foreign kings:

One sister is married to king Boleslaw the Bold of Poland, another one to King Malcolm of Scotland and a third one to the son and heir of King Harold of England. The last sister is married to his cousin, King Alfonso VI of Léon. Léon was the mightiest of christian Iberian kingdoms, but Antso did not have the best of relations with Alfonso. The marriage was an attempt to boost them.
Finally, a brother is married to the sister of Kaiser Heinrich, the Holy Roman Emperor.

Last, but certainly not least, king Antso marries duchess Mathilda of Toscana.

Navarra is bordered by Castille, Aragon, France and some small Moorish sheikhdoms. Antso knew that Navarra would only have a chance to survive if it could grow. The small muslim states would prove an excellent prey:
In 1067 Antso declares war on the infidels of Zaragoza. The infidels are stronger than Navarra, but not stronger than Navarra AND its allies. Therefore Antso calls his allies to arms.

Thanks to his allies, Antso managed to end the war by 1068 and annex the area of Zaragoza. But to prevent the muslims from reorganizing, Antso does not rest but immediatly marches on to the Sheikhdom of Albarracin. It is conquered in 1069, once again thanks to the allies of Navarra.

In 1070, Antso received word from the young queen of Galicia that her kingdom is being invaded by the infidels of Beja. Antso immediatly send word back that he would come to her aid. He raised his armies and marched west. The other Iberian kings followed his example, and together they drove back the heathens.

In 1071, Mathilda gave birth to a son: Gartzia. Gartzia would be the next king of Navarra. To celebrate this gift of God, Antso once again raised his troops and attacked Catalyud. He once again called his allies to arms, but this was actually not really needed. Catalyud was isolated, and would prove no match for the Navarrese.
Catalyud was conquered in 1073, and to thank Antso for destroying the infidels, God gifted him with a second son: Fernando.

But in 1074, Antso receives desturbing news: The queen of Galicia has died and has left an underage girl as successor. The King of Léon (who now also is King of Castille) claims to be the true King of Galicia and invades the kingdom. The Galician regent sends a letter to Antso asking for his help against Léon. It's a difficult decision.
Antso decides that it's best not to get involved: It would plunge all christian kingdoms in a destructive war. Furthermore, it would be best for the war to be over as quickly as possible. Joining the war would only make it last longer as there were more parties involved. And lastly, Léon was big. Galicia did not stand a chance, with or without Navarrese help. Galicia would be conquered by Léon. This did have an upside: A large part of christian Iberia was now united under one king, and formed a powerful force to fight the Moors.

In 1076, God once again shows his love to Antso: Twins are born! The boys are called Fortun and Gomez.

In 1080, Antso invades Barcelona (the duchy had been conqueren by muslims a while back). But the French see it as an opportunity to expand as well, and they invade the area. In 1081 the French would gain the largest part of the duchy, but Barcelona itself would fall into the hands of King Antso IV.

The next few years are rather peaceful, and Antso spends his time building better fortifications in Pamplona.

In 1085, Antso declares himself 'Duke of Aragon'. A title that was hold by the small King of Aragon. Antso thought Aragon was too small and too weak to fight the infidels, and it would be best that the area would come under the control of Navarra. He therefore invades Alto Aragon (Ducal claim). Luckily the king of Léon decides to not get involved (probably because Antso did not interfere in his war against Galicia as well). The war is ended rather quickly.
The kingdom of Aragon ceases to exist.

In 1087 prince Gartzia reaches the age of 16, but disaster strikes: Soon aftern his birthday the heir falls ill and dies within a matter of days! Fernando is now the new heir to the throne.
Fernando turns 16 in 1089, the year in which Léon invades the emirate of Valencia to conquer Toledo. Antso sees this as an oportunity to seize the 'duchy' of Valencia, but not after marrying Fernando to the sister of Philippe Capet, King of France. This new ally would join Navarra in its war against Valencia.
The war would end in victory for Navarra in 1091. It would not have been possible without the support of the French.

In 1092 Fortun and Gomez reach the age of 16. A grand tournament is held to celebrate!

In 1093 Léon is plunged into civil war. The local nobles tried to reverse unpopular reforms by the king, trying to consolidate his power. (Crown authority war) Even though, this would show signs of weakness to the infidels, Antso thought this was a good thing for two reasons:
1) The king of Léon and the king of Navarra were not exactly the best of friends.
2) This provided an opportunity to invade the county of Viscaya, which is de jure a part of the duchy of Navarra.
But the civil war would end soon, and the war for Viscaya is aborted.

The king of Léon would eventually die in 1094. His daughter, Queen Mayor I would rise to the throne. Her first act as a queen is to invade Corduba, and she asks Antso for help. Ants agrees, because he thought it would be wise to, for once, have good relations with the ruler of the mightiest christian realm in the area.
the war would end in a christian victory in 1096. Queen Mayor I is very grateful. (opinion: 100)

In 1097, Antso decides to invade the county of Almansa, which is one of the last holdings of the Emir of Murcia.
Navarra is backed up by Léon and Scotland. The king of France has already died and France has plunged into civil war, so there's no help from the Capetians.

The Emir of Murcia calls in his father-in-law: the sultan of Mauretania.

The Pope donates 200 gold to help Antso fight the heathens.

By 1098, Two of three major settlements in the region have been captured by Navarrese forces, while the King of Scotland is laying siege to a Mauretanian holding in Spain. But then a giant (5000+) army of Sultan Abu-Bakr I of Mauretania enters the field. The Navarese are defeated and flee the field. Antso returns to his capital to hire (Catalan) mercenaries and regroup. The Scottish army is repelled as well.
Antso moves to the Navarrese-Murcian border with his 2300 man army in 1099, but he is ambushed by the Mauretanian army. Panic ensues and the Navarians are butchered. King Antso IV is hit by an arrow in the throat and dies on the field.

Fernando, as the oldest son, is proclaimed the new king.

Pictures will be up soon. I'm experiencing some technical issues at the moment.

TMA_Cool will take the role of King Fernando I!

The reign of King Fernando (1099 - 1042)

Its December of the year 1099, and Fernando saw his father fall from the horse, but didn’t believe he died until the surgeon approached.
Soon it was proclaimed by all the campment, “the king is dead long live the king!”
With the death of his father, he became King Fernando. With murcian troops close behind he had no choice but to retreat, hoping to meet with the mercenary company his father had hired.
He dispatches riders to meet with the mercenaries as soon as possible and order them to march quickly.
At night the army stops to rest and the King receive reports from a rider, reporting that he saw fires of the enemy encampment half a day ride from here. Without a moment to lose, he calls all his generals in order to discuss what to do. “The situation is dire your highness, we cannot hope to beat them with a frontal attack. We are outnumbered and demoralized because of the least battle. We need those mercs to arrive soon.”The king thought about it and said “We may have no choice, at the moment we are the only army between the Arabs and Christian lands, we must stop them. We must be prepared at all times. If the mercs don’t arrive by dusk, we will have no choice but to attack, the enemy is too close for us to outrun it. You are all dismissed”.
The King went to his tent, trying to get some sleep and hoping its riders contacted the mercs and that they are on their way.
At midday there was still no sign of the mercs, the situation was worse than before, riders report a second, smaller, army coming from the north.
“Somehow they went around us and will try to flank us! Soldiers to arms!” he screamed.
The new comers were moving fast, and, when they were closer the King noticed that they were using the kingdom`s banners. “We are saved” he thought. They were the mercs who finally arrived.
With both forces combined, the King prepared for battle.
Both armies clashed, the sound of steel and the screams or the wounded and dying was terrible, but after a few hours the battle was finished. The troops of Emir Bakhti I of Murcia were crushed, and the retreating soldiers reformed at Cordoba. Where they were annihilated by a combined force of Navarrese and fresh Scottish troops. There was little room for celebration for the King.

It was the month of March 1101 and after various campaigns, the king received a letter, his cousin count Antonino of Najera has rebelled!
The King crushed the letter and screamed “What treachery is this!” he then assembled his royal bodyguards, and 1000 to retake his cousnin`s territories.
A few days later he was besieging the gates of Najera, his cousin still inside.
This took a few months, and into. The Kings cousin was incarcerated and his lands confiscated.
The war against Murcia still raged on. A new army had to be assembled. The King ordered new levies raised and trained.
The King decided the war against Murcia needed to end. He decided to have one decisive battle. For this he chose the province of Almansa.

In 1103 both, navarrese and murcian armies clashed once more.
This time it was a massacre. One of the murcian flanks panicked and retreated, the army was enveloped. Only a dozen survived.
The war was far from over, still the castle of Almansa was standing. The siege lasted 2 years approximately.
The following years various small skirmishes took place, finally the war Navarrese Holy war for Murcia ended in a white peace in the year 1107.

The king didn’t even sit on his throne that he received news of several of his vassals taking arms against his rule. He dealt with them swiftly. In almost 1 year the realm was at last in peace.
Come the year 1108, and the kingdom was threatened yet again. The 2nd Sevillian Holy War for Valencia begins, declared by Emir Fath, the cruel.
The war was long and bloody, the castles at Valencia changed hand numerous times, but in may 1113 the navarrese armies achieved victory!

For the next few years the King focused on administrating its realm, rebuilding the towns after the wars. He sealed an alliance with the duke of Asturias by marrying his daughter Bianca to him in 1115. Then in 1116 his son and heir, Prince Antso, entered a bethrodal with a Byzantine princess and was granted the County of Valencia by the King.

By 1117 the King got a claim on the County of Denia. He decided to press for it, starting the Navarres-Algraves Ducal war over Denia. Through careful diplomacy he secured the help of the Kingdom of Leon in the war.
Victory came quickly, by 1119 the last of algravese forces surrendered and Denia became part of the Kingdom of Navarra.

On January 1120, the King had to bury his daughter. She died suddenly at age 27. The King grieved his daughter for various weeks, it was his oldes daughter.
Then by the month of June he bethroded his second daughter, Princess Ana, to the King of England.

An year later, in 1121, the King`s mother, Matilda of Tuscany dies, leaving her duchy to King Fernando. This events cause internal turmoil, the King has not even a chance to mourn his mother when he has to go into battle once more.
The County of Ferrara attempts to gain independence from the Duchy of Tuscany, initially they won battles, but when the Kings troops arrived things changed.
Meanwhile, the King`s brother, Prince Gomez, attempted to claim Tuscany for himself with the support of the Queen of Leon, and the counts of Castellon, Calatayud and Valencia. What hurt the king more, worse than his brother, was that his own son Antso had taken arms against him.
Ferrara fell quickly, but the forces of his brother matched the King`s. The war lasted for years all across the realm. Luckily his brother died of natural causes in july, 1125, ending the war.

The king had no other heir than the son that betrayed him, so he decided to grant his son the Duchy of Tuscany in hopes that it will prevent him from revolting again.
These wars were followed by 5 years of peace, but in 1130 war started again. Arabian troops attempted to invade the Kingdom`s land, but they were quickly expelled from Tarragona, Lleida and Urgell. A white peace ensued.

7 years of peace followed, until the Kabylian claim on Barcelona War begun in 1137. The realm levies were assembled once more, and Fernando sends an expedition into the enemy lands, crushing the armies there and beginning to siege the provinces to achieve peace. The war finally ended in 1139, with a victory for the Kingdom of Navarra.

In 1140 various events take place. Queen Consort Alice de Valois dies of old age. And Fernando marries Ana de Foix, daughter of the Countess of Foix, a young woman who will hopefully give him many children, and hopefully a new heir.

Meanwhile Navarrense troops were busy fighting in Africa against the Arabs. Suddenly the Denian war of Independence erupted, because most of the troops were fighting in Africa, the King had to use mercenaries to crush the rebels. Luckily, the realm coffers were full. A mercenary force was dispatched, and brought down the rebels in the middle of 1141.

The King lived the last year of his life in his castle, attending to the administration of the kingdom. He decided to go into battle one last time, commanding his armies. He did and was victorious, but got sickness while in the campaign. He recovered some days later, but on September 1142 King Fernando of Navarra died while sleeping at the age of 68.
