I am having real difficulty about battles. It is not possible to win a battle in rts mode i even cant move my ships to a position i want. In command mode i am able to control a ship but i need to position all my ships and command mode is useless for all of them because i wanna change their directions at the same time. Any advices ?

Bring bigger ships?

Did you notice the wind gage?

Turn the ships ahead of the wind, that will give them speed...then you can position them any way you want.

Okay now I feel like writing a proper long response here. :)

Myself after three weeks spent with the game I can tell you that it's all about fleet composition, good captains, crew experience and organization.

There's a thread on tactics that suggests good organization and explains the usage of the line formation along with some skill tips:

On captains I wrote here:

On fleet composition we have lots of decent discussion here:

On pirating AI companies I wrote here:

Myself I use Galleon+Flutes, Xebec+Schooners, Frigate+Brigs and SOL46+East Indiamen fleets currently so speeds are similar and line doesn't break. I hunt other companies ships with fleets of Brig+Xebecs, 3x Frigates or late in the game SOLs.

I usually have one warship per convoy, warship which I'm willing to sacrifice to let other ships get out of there safely.

My combat captains always are Unsinkable, Feared and can Rout which are three best combat skills out there.

In combat I usually try to get upwind against enemy fleet and when they climb slowly my way form a line and shoot the crap out of them even before they get close. Then if they are stronger I sink their flagship and try to use Rout to make them surrender. If they are weaker I damage their sails and use buckshots to eliminate crew forcing surrender. If they don't want to surrender I go and board them.

Ships marginally responsive

I agree the ships do what they want, when they want. You will also notice that where you click for them to move is not where the destination flag goes.

They need to include turning arcs and such, similar to Age of Sail, so you can tell them how to turn.

Another MAJOR quirk is that the ships on the battlefield are not starting off in line order. Once you hit line formation, they might engage in a Keystone Cops routine, all the while your fleet of brigs and galleons are being shredded by cutters and xebecs.

This game needs a few more patches before I can see it as a meaningful improvement over Patrician or Merchant Prince.
