Is it possible to give standing orders to a naval (or other) unit? I may well limit myself to playing Russia, Austria, and Turkey if it isn't or if no way to automate naval operations becomes available. I find that I forget the fleets too easily and get messages informing me that they've been annialated or that an enemey has landed a small invasion force in the face of a fleet that sat in port because I got tired of manually ordering it to patrol.

I know. I know. History is full of examples of outposts that starved because the king forgot they existed. By the same token the king didn't go down to the docks and greet the returning commodore asking, "How went the patrol in Our ocean Smith? Very well. It is Our desire that you shall go and do likewise for Us again, reporting unto Us any untoward presence of heathen or heretic fleets off of Our shores."

In short is there a way to order a fleet to patrol and repeat the process? If not can we add this to the list of things to add to EU2?

Re. keeping track of fleets. One thing you can do for that is simply make a policy of, once or twice a year unzooming the screen to maximum (this is a really neat way of seeing the stretches of your empire on political map mode.) Any lit sea zone will contain an unaccounted-for boat.

Re. patrolling. People have suggested having docked ships light up the adjacent sea zone. *I* think that'd be a good idea, and one would think that could be done with the 1.09 patch...I'm hoping it happens...

...course, i just play Russia thus far anyways...

Why would you want your fleet to patrol? Keep your fleet in one of your ports and when your enemy is near just take it out of your port. I don't think you need a patroling fleet in peacetime. So in case of war before you see enemy's fleet just move your fleet into the ocean. There is no need to patroll all the time.

Also if you reach a certain naval tech(don't remmember which one) your docked fleet will enable you to see an adjacent sea zone.

You can set waypoints (shift+click) and thus make the fleet go up and down a coast for instance. There is no "loop" function though, so after a while they "run out of" orders. Likewise, if they get into combat they forget where they where heading.
