Yep - I turned my back on them for the same reason.
I considered purchasing Windows 98SE and completely reformatting the HDD but wasnt sure if the Graphics Chip would still cause conflicts or not. So I gave the PC to my daughter for Internet work and bought myself a new machine with a proper graphics card.

it's not that Compaq are bad machines, but, if you buy Compaq, you need to buy Compaq for everything you want to add. In the end it is costing you a lot.

If you don't want "clone" (no-name) computers, try with Dell, they are a little bit less proprietary than Compaq.

best thing however is a good ol' clone ;)
