Just annex the whole thing. Build 10 or so 2xCAV for mobile response teams plus the usual GAR/MIL + MP suppressors and you'll be fine. Yes, having even a rump Soviet's army is nice but feels rather gamey to me.
Personally I didn't like the puppet idea because I felt the Soviet remnants would just get in the way - if they took part in any fighting at all. It's possible the SU could avoid all conflicts altogether, if the Allied AI decided to focus on me, so the Red Army could very well prove entirely useless. So it's NO for puppet either way... Thanks, it helped me make up my mind. :D

Totally enjoying this!
Glad to hear it.

Chapter 2: Soviet Union
Part 4: Russian winter? Yes, please!

Last time I said I'd spread my heavy tanks and push forward along the whole front. It didn't work. It took me two bloody months just to move my tank stacks from one place to another, not very far away. Spreading out went out of the window, let alone any moving forward. All thanks to weather. Russian winter? Bah! Load of bollocks...

In the upper right hand corner you can see an actual winter. That's how snow and frost look like. The rest of the country is NOT snow and frost. Mother Russia decided to show me the middle finger and General Winter went on vacation, while his lesser-known sidekick Colonel Autumn remained in office. I. Hate. Mud.

The Japanese have finally decided to attack the USA. They sure took their time... But I guess it makes sense. They operated on war laws all these years, while the Americans were stuck with peace time policies. If they feel strong enough now, it's all the better - the USN will have a nice distraction (and maybe get a kick or two in the teeth), instead of bringing their full weight against me.

This is I think the only time so far that the weather map has proven actually useful to me. If I didn't know about this rainfall, I'd have started the offensive prematurely and got stuck in the mud that covered the whole friggin Ukraine. As it was, I had to wait a week or two before the ground dried enough, but in return the operation itself went smoothly.

Meanwhile, the Soviets managed to gather a significant armoured force (they even had a heavy tank division) south of the Pripyat marshes and started to push so strong that I actually wasn't able to hold. Well, at least not until I brought my own heavy armour in. However, while quite impressive on a local scale, it was just that - a small, localised effort that couldn't change the course of the war. And it proved to be their last.

With a significant portion of the Soviet army destroyed, a breakthrough was achieved without difficulty this time. The Bolsheviks were quickly surrounded and eliminated, and the road east was open.

Since the Soviets were spread so thinly now, I decided to finally attack in the north. The setup was far from perfect, but hopefully my light tanks would be able to move unopposed across the plains and quickly circle around.

It was time to look at the larger perspective. I knew from experience that taking Moscow itself wasn't enough to defeat the Soviet Union (I think it used to be, or was almost enough, in SF?), so I certainly had to go for Leningrad and Stalingrad. There are also several VPs in the Caucasus, so I'd take these too. With a light force. Last time I visited the USSR, I sent a heavy armour corps there, convinced the war was already over and the Red Army had been completely eliminated. You can guess it didn't turn out too well.

The attack towards Leningrad isn't as successful as I'd hoped, but it does manage to encircle a portion of the Soviet forces. However, I decided to halt the advance for now and redirect most of my divisions south, as there was a possibility slowly forming to encircle the Red Army units located in the Pripyat marshes.

The operation went better than expected; I managed to bag almost every Soviet unit in the area.

By the middle of May 1943, the Red Army effectively ceased to exist.

Somewhere along the way, I captured Poltava. Black soil, weeee!

At this point, I started to withdraw my units from the front, in order to reduce the strain on the supply system. The 3rd Armoured Corps went first, but more followed and soon almost half of my army was back in the homeland.

With most of the USSR army gone, I was able to move quickly, and at the turn of June, the three major Soviet VPs are captured within the space of a few days.

But it was nowhere near enough to bring Uncle Joe to his knees. I had to go deeper into Soviet territory.

In the wider world, the Japanese home islands are invaded. By the Dutch, of all nations. Seriously, IJN...?

A general offensive is over. Right now, I'm just moving for the individual VPs. Soviet Union, Y U NO SURRENDER?!

In order to speed things up, I decided on a sea invasion of Murmansk and Archangelsk. It took my fleet a bit to rebase, but ultimately the operation went without any regrettable incidents (thankfully, since the Red Fleet tried to interrupt and some of my transports took a beating), and with the fall of Archangelsk...

...it was over.

What's the manpower (etc.) gain of the greater (greatest?) Poland? I think it'd about time for an economic, political and military update.

I agree completely. So unshapely, and those independent countries in the middle... yeugh. :D

What's the manpower (etc.) gain of the greater (greatest?) Poland? I think it'd about time for an economic, political and military update.
I was going to do precisely that next. :D I'll put the update together in a few hours.

Now I want to see Poland in USA
I'll see what I can do...

============================

Interlude 2

Ok, so it took me a bit more than a few hours. Nevermind, here's the update.

Fun fact: there are no countries in the Comintern, but it still holds some VPs. Is there some communist underground in my empire, or what?

The paternal autocrats still hold the majority, although with only a small advantage over the various brands of conservatists, and the difference seems to be further decreasing slowly. But I think they should still be able to win the next election.

Now, for the really important things.

Poland's effective IC is 372, which is quite a gratifying value, especially compared to the disappointment with German contribution. It's still way behind the USA, of course, but it can't be helped. Resource situation is completely comfortable, with excess in every department. Basically, I don't have to worry about it anymore. Even if new IC acquisitions cause me to drop into a deficit (I'm guessing the UK, with their low amount of homeland rares, might have such an effect), the stockpiles I've gathered will last for the remainder of the game. Manpower situation is also excellent; less than a month of reinforcing, and then everything goes to the reserve.

Tech situation is as follows:

I've neglected infantry AT weapons to save on research time. AT guns provide the majority of hard attack anyway. I've started catching up with light tank techs - if I'm going to use them, it'd be good to have up to date equipment, and they'll benefit MOT and MECH as well. Air techs aren't as modern as I'd like, but the situation should improve over the coming months. I've fallen behind in land doctrines, but like I said in the update before the invasion on SU - most of them don't have to be up to date. I'm only researching Mechanised Offensive - so I can do Combined Arms Warfare (sod the CA bonus, I need SP RART!) - and two others that have been just indecently neglected. A bit whimsically, I decided to go for supeheavy armour and jet engines. I probably won't be able to get jets before the game ends, but at least I'll try. The naval doctrines tab remains empty. Not a good thing, I know. I'll be rectifying it now that I have more leadership.

The production queue isn't full as the screen was taken immediately after the annexation. I'll be using the added IC to expand the air force, and probably for some more destroyers. The convoys have mostly acted as placeholders, so the IC didn't go to waste when I had no manpower to build combat units, and will be moved to the bottom of the queue again. The "Jan Kazimierz" and "Stanisław Koniecpolski" are probably the last carriers I'll be building, given that they'll come on line in very late 1944. There will be no point to starting construction of more CVs later on, since the game will be over by the time they'd be finished.

It's nice to see such a number of techs researched simultaneously, though it gets less impressive when you remember that this amount of leadership only became available recently. Within a month, 6 techs will be finished, which will give me a more or less up to date air force - at least as far as interceptors and CAGs are concerned, but that's all I need really - and free up slots for the much needed Sea Lane Defence and Fleet Auxiliary Carrier doctrines. Well, only SLD is really essential, but getting the Carrier Task Force doctrine from the FAC tree could be useful too. Even if it's going to take time, the USN may still be around when I get there.

Yeah, so I inherited the two useless Comintern puppets. Guess I'll have to live with it. My army isn't very large, only a fraction of what people field as Germany, for instance, but quite enough for my needs. With the Third Reich and Soviet Union gone, I'll be facing only the soft, western Allies; there will be no need for great numbers of troops. Since the figures above don't always give a clear picture of the situation, here's a breakdown of what I actually have:

14 divisions of HARM+ARM+MOT+TD
10 divisions of LARM+2xMOT

35 divisions of 3xINF+AT
20 divisions of 3xINF+AT+RART

2 divisions of 3xMTN+AT
2 divisions of MTN+2xINF+AT

I'll be gradually adding RART to the infantry divisions and SP RART to the tank divisions, when the tech becomes available. I also want to convert at least some MOT to MECH and the remaining ARM to HARM, but I haven't got a schedule for that yet. I could use some marines, but they take so long to build... And I'd love to have paratroopers... but I reckon this one is completely out of the question.

The navy is too small. Way too small. However, by March 1944 it will be expanded with 6 more fleet carriers, 4 heavy cruisers and 9 destroyers. Well, almost everything that's in the queue, aside from the ships that have just been added. I guess it'll be then that I'll try an invasion of Great Britain. Can't afford to wait longer anyway. But to that end, I'll need a lot more troop transports. Good thing they can be built so quickly.

The 'total' for the air force looks good, but most of it is CAGs. The number of real planes is much lower. If I think to invade the UK, I suppose I'll need to ground the RAF. I'm not really sure, as I haven't done that before... well, actually I have, but those were some very wacky circumstances. Anyway, I don't know if RAF really needs to be forced to the ground, since in all my years with HoI3, I've always made do without any kind of air force and frankly, never felt the need for it. But supposing I want/need to do that, I'll require at least 4 more interceptor squadrons. More NAVs might be useful in the long run too; there'll be many US Navy ships to shoot at.

A small update on the second interwar period.

====================

A short break

After the annexation of the Soviet Union, there was a small area left in the middle of Poland that wasn't Poland. It looked rather out of place, so I decided to fix the situation. Besides, look at the relations - they like us! They obviously want to join the fun! C'mon, Finland, hop aboard.

A carrier task force was dispatched to escort some 40 000 ambassadors to major localities in Finland. There was a tragic accident involving the Finnish welcoming committee, which caused the destruction of one of Polish transport ships, but the ambassadors were already ashore and the crew could be rescued, so all was fine. Otherwise, the ceremonies went smoothly...

...and ten days later, the agreement was signed and Finland officially became part of the great Polish commonwealth.

With that taken care of, I could turn my attention to other matters.

Huh. De Gaulle commanding some ass-end-of-nowhere garrison... I wonder who he rubbed the wrong way.

So the Dutch have not just invaded, they are making progress. While Japan annexed by Holland would be a hilarious outcome, I'd rather have Nippon stay in the war and continue to distract the US...

Ah, yes. Somewhere along the way I also invaded Lithuania. However, I didn't think to secure the border with East Prussia, which the Lithuanians cheerfully took advantage of, instead of defending their country. Once they lost control of it due to annexation, the area was given over to the Japanese. A stupid mistake, though thankfully it's not a big loss.

In preparation for the coming war with the western Allies, I delegated two 5-brigade divisions as garrisons for the polar islands, in case the US got some funny ideas.

The game prepared a very stupid surprise for me. For reasons I don't have a clue about, the list of wargoals I can select against France is limited to one. Can't even puppet them. And of course I can't take the whole of France this way either (by adding multiple wargoals), only parts of it. Sigh. At least the majority of French industry is located in areas that are available.

Ok, let's review the plan. Well, it's not much of a plan, but how can you have a plan when there's no enemy army to fight? One thing I know, though, is that I'll need a strong southern force to quickly take over Italy. Since France only occupies the area and has not annexed it, I can't acquire it through a wargoal, so I have to physically occupy the Boot myself when the war ends. This task was assigned to the 5-corps Army Kraków. The forces concentrated at the northern front are totally excessive, given that France seems empty, but this amount of tanks will at least allow me to move quickly. Not that I can be TOO quick; I have to drag the war at least for a month so I can add a second demand for territory (need Western and Northern France).

This is brutally awesome. I've tried and failed as Poland to beat German, but then again I'm not too great at the game. My greatest accomplishment to date is having taken over China as the communists. I'm incredibly impressed by this. Keep on keeping on.

I've tried and failed as Poland to beat German, but then again I'm not too great at the game.
When it comes to Poland, I don't think it's about being good at the game; it's simply about going totally ahistorical. I don't think it's possible to beat Germany under normal conditions, regardless of your skill - the Reich has just too large an army and too ridiculous strength modifiers. Even if you achieve some local success (e.g. taking East Prussia) and prevent the Wehrmacht from blitzing it to your VPs, you'll be bled dry before Christmas due to manpower shortage.

Anyway - I'm glad you're enjoying the AAR. :) And congrats on taking China as the commies - I've heard people can do it, but I can hardly imagine it myself, given the disproportion of forces.

Chapter 3: The West
Part 1: The Fall of France

Since a DoW would bring me into conflict with all three Allied majors anyway, I could do it properly and declare war on the faction leader, signifying this is no mere land-grab with a cascade effect of alliances, but a clash to decide the fate of the world. I was also hoping that once I'm at war through a DoW on another country, all wargoals against France would become available. :p Sadly, the game continued to deny me a full conquest of Gaul, so I had to do things as originally planned. I added "Acquire territory: Northern France", and prepared to drag the war for another month. The incorporation of the Baltic States would also continue; it was time for Latvia now.

Two days later I figured I could just as well go for the rest of the Benelux; no point in wasting time.

A week into the war. Uhm... hello? Royal Navy? WHERE ARE YOU?

Here's a curious little thing. Just moments ago, this MECH division wasn't here. It wasn't broken and forced to fall back, or anything, it just wasn't on the map. The AI must've DEPLOYED it here. In a province under attack, where the unit can't gain org.

The Maginot line has mostly been taken and my forces are starting to spread around. The advance into Italy is going significantly slower; the Alps take a lot of time to cross.

Oh. Now I know where the whole French army was. Though it's a mystery as to why it was there in the first place...

Almost two weeks into the war, the advance is going surprisingly slowly. But now that most of the units holed up in the fortified area have been eliminated, it should take up pace, despite the trickle of reinforcements from Marseille. In contrast, the Belgians are putting up a very determined defence.

Wait. Where are these bombers even coming from? I didn't think this port was in range of any UK airbase... Will need to get them some fighter cover.

Oh, HERE you are! About time you showed up, Royal Navy. It's only shame that your 3 light carriers can kick the hell out of my 4 fleet carriers. I don't get it. There weren't even any RAF fighters around.

Both forces have cleared the initial obstacles. The northern group is done with the Maginot line and its few defenders, the southern one is finally free of the Alps.

Latvia has been incorporated and we proceed to Estonia right away.

Whoa, the US are here already? It's just a transport plane, but if the AI can react so quickly, it could just as well have an invasion fleet following somewhere behind...

It's the end for the brave Belgians; their forces surrounded and split. Nevertheless, their fighting spirit earned them much respect from the Polish soldiers. It's a pity that very few of them will probably decide to join the Polish army... they will keep to the loyalties towards powerless countries that their leaders chose for them.

The advance is progressing unhurriedly. I don't know. I think it's the lack of enemy. When there's no army before me, I don't know where to go!

Another famous name in command of a garrison. The French made some poor life choices in this game.

Huh, some Dutch transports... wonder if they're moving troops in or evacuating them... Too bad my fleet got shot up and is no shape to intercept.

Ok, so the transports must've been carrying reinforcements, cause there are Dutch units in the Netherlands that haven't been there just a moment ago. But why are they Belgian expeditionary forces?

Excellent, now all of eastern Europe is uniform in colour. Well, except that patch of land around Koenigsberg... sigh.

I was afraid I wouldn't be able to take Rome before the war ended, but thankfully it wasn't so. Most of the important Italian cities are now mine. And a good thing, that, cause a few days later, the war does indeed end. At least, war with France.

Note the insane amount of IC I have. Well, it's not insane in itself, but compared to the value from before the campaign, it means I'm getting full Italian IC, no revolt risk, no occupation policies, nothing - like it was my own land! Same goes for Leadership, it went through the roof! (sorry, didn't take a screencap in the excitement) It's crazy! :D

Well, it kinda makes sense - the Italians, crushed and forced to suffer under French occupation (not for the first time, to boot)... And now the Poles come, and sweep the French away. Polish soldiers must've been welcomed as liberators; no wonder that Italian workers went back to factories with renewed vigour, and Italian intellectuals offered their full cooperation - anything to aid the Polish war effort. Gee, among all this conquering the world, it's a really heartwarming moment, heh heh heh.

Why wouldn't you DoW Britain and conquer France as a whole with default "conquer" wargoal?

crap. :glare:

Poor Belgium, no one has the guts to pick them up, only a trench Rifleman... (Ikar, you cheated with belgelands, that doesn't count ;))

Meeeh, I just want decent regional powers to play with. Most of them barely have those 30 IC and have a chance to expand at best (Hungary, China - this one gets too big for my taste later on, but I shall make an AAR about it too at some point). I usually go for something that can give a finger to majors, but not a major per se :)

Tell everybody that a 15-year old kid has beaten you to it! :p
Beaten me to what? As far as I'm aware, I'm firmly sitting both in Paris and in Rome. :p And at any rate, after reading "Ender's game", I see no shame in losing to a 15-year old. :p Anyway, nice one with Italy there. Did you take Yugoslavia too?

Parts of it. I'm not sure whether I ceded some land from Soviets to Greece at that point, as my army wouldn't be able to get to Italy, but in the end, I conducted a landing in the south anyway :)

After one more longish break, here's another update. This time, the period of preparations for the invasion of Great Britain.

=============================================

Chapter 3: The West
Part 2: Winter Break

The first thing I noticed after loading the game was the IC. Noooooo...! Unfortunately, the game adjusted and decided that Italy is subject to a standard Collaboration Government, which I can't even change, because I'm not at war with the Axis. This same way I also lost a lot of Italian LD. It was disappointing.

Anyway, the invasion of France spurred the USA into action. They organised themselves surprisingly quickly and conducted three small landings on Polish-controlled shores.

The first gave Polish soldiers a good taste of G.I. lead and demonstrated that Westerners can put up a decent fight after all, but the force was easily defeated by nearby units when the American boys smartly left their only port undefended.

The second force landed on the other side of the world. Nothing to be afraid of (good luck crossing Siberia), but still irritating. Great job, Japan. Such might navy you've got there, the Americans can go where they please.

In order to counter the trespassers, the former Army Wołyń was renamed Army Khabarovsk, assigned to the Far East Command (army group-level HQ for reduced supply consumption) and sent on its long way. It'll be months before they get there, but it's not like there's any rush.

The third landing baffles me. I don't really understand how the US fleet got here. If Denmark and Norway are mine, the way through the Baltic straits should be closed, right? Can they go through the Kiel Canal, or what?

At any rate, the landing resulted in a major sea battle, in which my carriers again proved mostly non-threatening. The American fleet, on the other hand, posed a significant threat. Despite the lower effective positioning, even their friggin battleships were in range to fire on my carriers. It kinda makes sense, since my vessels were forced to leave the port straight into US guns, so they were in a "blockade run" situation of sorts, but I didn't think the game took such things into account. The Americans were able to grind through my carrier group easily, and the odds only swung a little more in my favour when the battered 2nd Fleet disengaged and was replaced by admiral Świrski's CTF and the destroyers of the 3rd Fleet (screen no. 2). I was able to inflict some damage then, but it was the Americans who scored the only kill, and they withdrew only after achieving their objective, i.e. landing the invasion force.

The invasion itself was notable for the participation of a Japanese squadron operating from Königsberg. The Polish soldiers certainly cheered when they saw bombers marked with red suns roar across the sky towards the common enemy. The incursion was again contained and defeated rather quickly, with the exception of a single MECH division which managed to slip by and get away quite far before my infantry was able to catch up with it - and only thanks to the assistance of a cavalry brigade stationed in Berlin, which intercepted the division and caused it to incur an attack delay.

As for Japan, the fight must've gone out of the invading Dutch with the fall of their homeland, as the IJA appears to have regained some ground.

Look at that - the Japanese have landed and cut the Americans off from supplies. When you try to coordinate actions with your actual AI allies, you won't get this kind of cooperation for a million bucks. Here - I'm not even trying to get into their faction, and yet the Japs are helping me like we were the best of friends. The wonders that having a common enemy can do... It's only a pity that the division later got destroyed, since it went OOS itself, standing in my territory.

I also took a look at the list of sunk ships, Japanese ones in particular. Above are only the largest vessels lost by the IJN. On the whole, the Japanese fleet is at the bottom of the ocean, having lost 71 ships, if my count is correct. The absolute majority were destroyed by the UK, with only a few ships scored by the USA and France. This is a surprise for me; I imagined the British and Japanese navies were pretty evenly matched, the Japanese making up with carriers for their fewer battleships. Here, the UK has also suffered high losses, but the Japs didn't give nearly as good as they got, and the British only lost about half the number of ships they sunk, and even less tonnage - only one battleship and one light carrier, the rest are escorts, subs and transports. This explains why the USN can freely roam waters that should be fully under Japanese control.

The only thing my carriers can do - sink subs.

Throughout all the late 1943 and early 1944, one group of people was keeping me constant company - the RAF Bomber Command. I mistakenly thought that the only areas to be bombed were Denmark, northern France and the Balkans, so that was where I focused my efforts. It was only when I took the screenshots, after loading earlier saves, that I noticed that the whole of western Europe was under attack. At least I managed slow down the rate at which the British reduced my NU. Somewhat. I think.

By the middle of March 1944, my preparations for the invasion of Great Britain were finished. My transports left the shipyards, all CAGs received their carriers, the new heavy cruisers and destroyers reached full ORG... I couldn't get any stronger before next year.

So, next episode: Operation Sea Antlion! :p

Chapter 3: The West
Part 3: Sea Antlion

I had two possible landing zones. One was Brighton, an undefended province. But it also doesn't have a port, and I was somewhat afraid to drop my units into an area where I couldn't deliver supplies to. Intelligence didn't show any enemy troops in the small port of Bournemouth, but aerial recon proved that the AI was thorough and the province was defended as well. So landing was to be performed in Brighton after all.

I wanted to attack immediately, but I noticed that my interceptors were damaged and partly deorged, so I decided to wait until they are repaired.

The repairs took almost a month, as it happened, but on 8th April absolutely every preparation was finished. Interceptors take off for air superiority missions over the landing zone.

The initial encounters are promising. After my previous clashes with the RAF I was rather pessimistic, but it appears that advantage of numbers made up for my inferior doctrines.

It felt much longer when I played, but after less than 48 hours, no more RAF fighters show up to challenge Polish dominance in the air.

Almost my entire navy takes part in the operation. Two carrier groups and one SAG are arranged in a defensive formation around the transport fleet. 10 fleet carriers, 6 heavy cruisers, 28 destroyers and 12 transports in total.

As they move into position, the 1st Fleet encounters an RN group in the English Channel, and the whole invasion fleet needs to be halted. But despite their advantage, the British disengage the next day.

They are not marines, but the 9th Infantry Corps carried out both of my previous amphibious operations, and it's become something of a tradition, so they get the job this time as well. The 47th and 48th Dvisions perform pinning attacks against neighbouring provinces, while the others land directly in Brighton.

The Royal Navy attacks my perimeter, but is unable to break through.

Once the divisions have landed, attacks are launched against the neighbouring ports and against Aldershot, to prevent the division located there from attacking the beachhead.

Pinning attacks on Portsmouth and Dover are called off and the transport fleet returns to Dieppe for fresh troops. I load onto it the trusty 5th Infantry Corps and one armoured division. I don't want to send in too many troops, as I'm anxious about the supply situation at the beachhead, especially the tanks could deplete them at a terrible rate, but they will also be a devastating breakthrough force which should allow me to smash through the British defences quickly, so I'm willing to take the risk.

After I while, I remember that I can support the fights with shipborne artillery, so the 3rd Fleet is moved into position. Shame I forgot about it earlier; as it turns out, the cruisers provided a hefty -18% modifier for the defenders - could've really helped, especially in Dover.

While the odds calculated by the computer are significantly in my favour, I don't think I could win this battle in the end. Good thing reinforcements are on hand. As a digression, it's funny in a way that general Sosabowski is spearheading the attack on the British. If only I had some paratroopers for him...

Two days after the landing, the division defending Aldershot is forced to retreat.

Once the heavy armour has joined the fight, the odds change dramatically.

Later that day, the battle is won.

Before midnight, the defenders of Dover are defeated as well.

After recovering from attack delay, the remainder of the 9th Infantry Corps join their comrades at the beachhead. The British were able to slip fresh division into Portsmouth, Dover and Aldershot, but I have too much of an advantage now and they are overwhelmed in a matter of hours.

On 21st April, the Royal Navy sallies once again to try and break my blockade. This time, however, the airplanes of the 1st Fleet are actually able to deliver some damage. The carrier "Eagle" is so close to getting sunk... NNNGH...

The British fleet continues its battle, but it was already too late when it set sail. The invasion force has been delivered and both of the nearby ports are in Polish hands. I will not be pushed out of the island now.
