Some extra Tips on the dreaded 'ip not found'

Sorry for silly post title but after 5 hours of blood and sweat i managed to fix my 'ip not found' problem. I think i have some information that might be useful to the many poor souls who havnt got past this. As we all know routers and firewalls are the most comon causes of this error. They can also cause error getting into vnet but not to the same extent. I think this is because vnet does not require host-proccesses on your machine.

Anyway, i decided early on that my router was not the problem. Nothing there had changed since sunday when i was playing with no problems then. I then turned my attention to my firewall zone alarm. This had an error when it starting up so you would asume it wasnt running ie no icon in tray etc. Youd be wrong of course. Fact is that many of these annoying windows programs dont always show themselves as clearly as we might like. 'Rogue' proccesses as they are known run on the fly and are hard to identify. I decided on a theory that Some of these proccesses were still running behind my back as it were. I tried to uninstall zone alarm but no joy. Some annoying DLL error meant i could not even get rid of the damn thing. I then deleted the program folder which you shouldnt do of course as its not a proper uninstall. I restarted the machine and problem still persisted. To cut a long story short i then went through my PCs registry and /windows/system32 folder deleting every entry with the tag of zone labs. You can check this by selecting 'choose details' and then selecting company as information you want to display about the file. Note you will Have to do this in safe mode as the proccesses are running and you cant delete files in use. After a lot of messing about i killed the damn thing and can now join EU games. Ok so in summary

-Just cos some things such as IE and ICQ work doesnt mean there isnt a problem
-test other apps that you know require host proccesses for diagnostics
-Just cos there is no apparant firewall/port blocker running doesnt mean there isnt
-Careful of what you install and uninstall
-Routers are fine as long as you know how to use them

I actually had to use ZoneAlarm (though I suppose any firewall might have worked) to join MP games until a few months ago. I just started the firewall, joined game, shut ZA off.

zone alarm and paradox games works fine together as long as you remeber to allow the paradox games access in the firewall.

I haven't had any problems with zonealarm

Zonealarm isn't too bad now, but there was a problem about a year ago where they introduced a new patch that Zonealarm automatically asked to download and install. This new patch blocked EU2 MP completely, and continued to do so even when I repatched to the previous version. When I visited the Zonelabs forum, I found it was completely blocking lots of games and they hadn't tested it properly before release. I uninstalled Zonealarm and won't touch it with a bargepole ever again. Ever since then, I've used Kerio, which is better anyway. Zonealarm is one of those programs that lots of people use because it mostly does what they need and it's popular, but they could all do better without paying any extra.

Well im not saying zone alarm isnt compatible. Thing is I turned machine on and got a DLL validation error. Zone alarm had 'appeared' not to have started but still had proccesses running. The thing went loopy on me one day basically. This meaning that it didnt prompt me to allow trafiic. It just denied it auotomatically. It was running in the background somewhere and screwing up certain applications. This is probably an unusual thing to happen but watch out for it. Remember there was no sign of any firewall running on my machine but traffic was being denied!

I only use XP's own firewall (which I can easily switch on and off when I play MP).

Am I stupid...?
Well, as long as you have updated your Windows with latest security packs and don't use Mediaplayer 10, I'd say you are reasonably safe if you stay out of the not-so-reliable pages (like pages with... err.... interesting pictures) :)
