OK, I got a new laptop recently (thanks Microsoft you money grubbing so and so, I thought 10 was meant to be your last OS?) and I've reinstalled the game. Files have been verified twice, mods reactivated and all that fun stuff, and I'm trying to load my latest city from the Steam cloud.

Now 2 minutes into firing it up (loving the speedy loading times to be fair) the game crashes and I don't know why. Is this a problem with Windows 11 or am I doing something wrong)

Maybe this is the problem?

"Better to have a keg than a six-pack"

LOL

but, what I did on my new laptop, is I took the old drive out and swapped it into my new laptop and fired it up. no issues for me, except some windows updates and driver updates.

Smooth as butter.

Having a shuftie on forums, it may be an assets issue making the RAM cry (huh.)

I'll be attempting a cull at some point, especially now Emerging Downtown looks to be scratching that Medium Density itch

What do you mean by it's the GPU?

Did you update windows and/or the GPU drivers?
I mean the GPU is not powerful enough to run the game (not enough memory apparently. The game wants 1024MB and I have 128 according to CanYouRunIt).

Integrated graphics too and no option to run an external GPU.

Strange as Surviving Mars seems to run fine.

Integrated GPUs aren't good for gaming, especially this game.

But weren't you already running this game previously with success before the upgrade?
I was, but although that also had Integrated graphics, it was NVidia, this new one has Intel Iris Xe.

My own fault really. I assumed that the graphics card would have been better too.

nvidia doesn't make integrated graphics, they have dedicated GPUs only. so your old rig has a dGPU.

Intel only has integrated iGPUs currently.

I'd suggest returning the laptop if possible, and buy one with a dedicated GPU with as much video RAM (vRAM) as possible.

You'll also need a lot of system RAM as well as a decent 6-core or better CPU. I own all DLC and it uses 32GB system RAM.

I'll just have to do without I think. As I said, Surviving Mars works fine, as does Two Point Hospital, and I think I might have gotten Stellaris up and running again, so lesson learned. Returning and getting another laptop isn't an option I'm afraid.

I'm sorry to hear. I'm glad you can play your other games just fine still.

But you may still be able to play CS1. The crashes may be due to running out of memory. You can try increasing your pagefile to add more memory.

Here's a guide to help you out.

But CS1 can use up to 32GB memory, depending on your DLC owned.

Thanks, I do remember having to do this on my old rig, so I may try this if I really get the hankering.

I did a fresh install (having recently switched from Win8.1 to Win10 on this 2013 laptop) just before the update.

I'm pretty sure the oh so useful second start button launcher is taking longer to load after the update. It takes long enough that I often wonder if it is loading or not.

Also, the game is definitely taking longer to load. Current city is only about 6k population (test city for gathering data for the wiki, infinite money, unlocks, etc), and I notice frequent stuttering and pausing of music during loading.

Windows 10 (2015) is newer than your laptop. so it may run better with win8.1 as it is designed for DDR3 computers. Windows 10 is designed for DDR4 computers.

Also, you may need to allocate more memory to the pagefile, if you haven't already. CS1 can use up to 32GB of memory on an empty modless map. You may need more if you use workshop.

Maybe post your laptop's specs.

Here's a Steam guide on adding more memory with Window's pagefile.

Didn't expect W10 to outperform W8.1, but 8.1 was getting problematic. Lacking support, Steam browser not happy, then crashed and could not fix. Debated putting 8.1 back on, don't like 10, but went with it anyway. Not so bad with Open Shell, same as 8.1.

Both are from before switching to Win10, so driver versions going to be different. (Don't have either installed at the moment, so not fresh grabs, but hardware would all be the same.)
