Proudly presenting our model for the Royal Navy's new Type 45 Destroyer, also called the Daring class for its lead ship, created to be the world's best air defense escort ship.

Daring_class_maya_RED.jpg

Equipped with the state-of-the-art MBDA Aster anti-air missile systems and its famously all-seeing SAMPSON air-tracking radar, the Daring is a good friend to have nearby when sea skimmers come over the horizon.

Alas, the original order for twelve ships of this type has been reduced to six.

It's real life counterpart is not yet equipped with anti-ship (Harpoon) or anti-land missiles (Tomahawk), but this provision will certainly be seen in NWAC.

*drools* Now that's what I'm talking about :). First off before I start asking questions let me reiterate how gorgeous the model looks :). Also the fact we will be getting Harpoon, Tomahawk and Aster coupled with it's high capability radar should definitely be exciting... shame there are only 6 of these :(. Never expected 12 but was hopeful for 8!!

Now a few questions;
1) Will it have the stingray that it is provisioned for by any chance?
2) Will the Harpoon launchers be added to the model itself? They are the quad pack tubes and the would be located aft of the VLS between it and the bridge/ops room.
3) Will it be able to carry either 2 Lynx or 1 Merlin? Or would that type of versatility in hanger size take up to much design time better spent elsewhere

Will you be fitting Phalanx on board?
Also, I'm not sure they'll get Tomahawks since that'll require them to install a Mk 41 VLS.
If you want to install cruise missiles I suggest Storm Shadow. While they've yet to design a ship-launched version, but fits in the existing VLS and it has been suggested.

It doesn't the current VLS system is A-50. Storm Shadow (Naval Scalp for surface/sub-surface) requires the fitting of an A-70 VLS. As such either system would require the fitting of a new VLS. However there is space between the gun and the current VLS to take an additional 16-24 cells of either a MK41 VLS or a A70 VLS. Current reports suggest the RN would possibly prefer Mk41 due to the versatility with regards the different weapons it can hold. Also TLAM is a far superior strategic weapon to SCALP and would be much prefered to help compliment the fleet.

I'm sure they will be giving it Phalanx as currently the HMS Daring is deploying with Phalanx onboard and each Type 45 will be refitted at the earliest opportunity to have Phalanx.

Thanks for the kind words, guys! Øyvind is doing a great job with these models.

1. It will be trivial for us to add Stingrays, but I didn't know that was an option. Honestly, if a ship of this type ever gets in range to fire torps at a sub something has gone badly wrong :)
2. No, sorry.
3. We don't have the Lynx in the game, alas. It's a good candidate to add this option later, since two helos is a great ASW option.

Thiel:

Phalanx, yes. It's easier for us than the RN to install Mk41 on a ship, and Tomahawks appear to be the best LAM option by far.

Indeed he is, some of the models are shaping up really really nicely :). Also hold very true to real life which is quite awsome.

1. This is true however the ship has the option and quite often the point of the torpedo tubes is also for handy bearing only launches to try and spook a sub. Furthermore when something goes badly wrong having something to fire back is better than nothing... In any event the option is there for the T45, though if anyone knows any different please feel free to correct me.

2. Aww, that's a shame. How come? They are the same launchers from other models. I may be showing my ignorance here but can't you just cut and paste them into that space? Where are they going to fire from in the game? (I know these are trivial concerns compared to getting the UI, HUD, AI and good system modeling I'm just curious)
3. Indeed, although the Merlin is a far superior ASW platform than the Lynx due to greater payload, better sensors and greater endurance. The Lynx shines because of it's versatility, speed and ASuW capability which decimated the Iraq navy in the 1st gulf war with Sea Skua.

Thanks for answering all these questions by the way. Would also like to add once again that I believe the game is shaping up very nicely.

Brutoni,

1. That is very true :)
2. We have one model per unit. So yeah, we may put it in there, but those deadlines are getting awfully close.
3. We'll include the Westland Lynx HMA.8 after all. It's been a bit of back and forth, but since we cut the Braunschweig corvette (for being pretty useless in any mission we'll include) we'll include the Lynx instead.

Have you considered using the Lynx Wildcat instead? It should enter service within the next two or three years and it's unlikely that the existing Lynxes will soldier on for another twenty years. Visually they're very similar as well, and it would be a reasonable choice for most of the current Lynx operators who have ships that won't take the NH90 or similar.

Indeed, the Lynx wildcat is due to enter service with the Army next year. It is a considerable step up from the lynx having the space to operate weapons like LMM and HWGM weapons systems. Overall if you are going to include one of them I do think that the Lynx Wildcat is a real good choice to assume as a replacement for the current Lynx for operations in 2030.

You're perfectly right, gentlemen. It is the Wildcat we had listed, I just got the wrong name in my list.

It's a bit harder to find the facts on it, though.

Any idea how many Stingrays (I assume) it can carry in an ASW role? Two? I also wonder about what sonobuoys it is loaded with, and how many it can carry.

I will try and find that information out for you and list the sources I used. At the moment the expected loadout for the Thales Lightweight Multirole missile will be 2 pods of 7. The Thales heavyweight multirole missile is likely to be a Sea Skua mark 2 that has infra-red targetting ability as well as the capacity to attack static ground targets or targets that have been lased by someone else, capacity for that is 4 I believe.

As I said I will try and get back to you on details of the other information.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! :D

I'm curious, will Phalanx models themselves be added to the unit model to match the functionality? Not that it really matters to gameplay, just curious. :p
