Back then CK (the first crusader king was released) how believable was it that in less then a decade that series would bring paradox out of the dark ages (funny considering which time period CK is about but Im not one of those that say middle ages was a dark time). The first CK development was even started by another company but finished by paradox. I don't know how big of a success CK was but given that it did get an expension several years after release would tell me it was decent but not the greatest by any mean.

So a games success is not that dependent on its ancestors as you may think so just because Rome or Vicky have not been the most successful paradox games don't mean that they can not be the most successful (they can be as nothing is set in stone). That however don't mean that paradox will make a new Rome or Vicky game in this decade as for each game they make they could made another game and paradox is maybe looking for something new instead of improving the wheel a bit more. Naturally if the wheel cracks the whole company could come to a halt.

But by doing something new they may achive even higher successes both in matter and in mind. They tried to develop Runemaster which was neither historical nor a grand strategy game, while that game froze away it tells me that they have ambitions outside their "safe path" which is historical grand strategy. Now they are developing and will release Stellaris which could be seen as a compromise between the old and the new, grand strategy but with influences from turn based 4x games and it is a sci fi game. Just another steep and it may no longer even be a compromise game they will develop but a game like Runemaster, something new.

Just because an option have been shown safe in the past don't mean that you would wan't to do it again, people don't wan't to get stuck. I doubt paradox ambitions is to do CK-EU-HOI-Vicky-Rome-Stellaris over and over again, they will do new games, maybe they do a CKIII but that may be year 2030, maybe at 2050 they are at EU6 and not at EU10 or something and instead have done other game, some which may have been unthinkable that paradox would have done. Some not successful and some others more successful then what CKII is today.

Yes they did get money from EU (not the game) for one of their projects so that should tell us something about what they are currently doing but before it is revealed we can not be sure exactly what it is.

The game being quite old and the number of sales was adressed and put into context above. I will just add that it is obvious that V2 sold less well than CK2 or EU4. Your other point on the era I don't agree with, I find it to be quite popular today. What did you base your claim upon?

There seem to be way more media available about the early middle ages and WWII than the Victorian era. This perception might be different if you were British I guess.

Any of the options.. CKIII, Vicky 3, Rome 2.. sound amazing. I'll be getting it whatever it is. Paradox are by far the best developer out there now. Firaxis used to hold the mantle, but the Civ games have gotten too bloaty. The guys behind Football Manager are also up there in the running.

Either way, lets celebrate games makers not churning out first person shooter bores like you get on PS4 and Xbox - they're fun - but after you've played a few, you've played em all. Even GTA is getting a bit samey now.

I wish Europe would have something to rival Hollywood. Before WW2, Germans rivaled Hollywood, and today there have been many European movies, but there is no "Eurowood".
And i must say, high quality European movies are just better than high quality American movies, or at least ones i have watched. In Hollywood you can go watch a movie and already know the plot, but there are awesome European movies such as "very long engagement" or "Joyeux Noel" (In English, Merry Christmas, in Finnish it is translated for some reason as "day without a war"). Waterloo from 1970 is interestingly Soviet-Italian film, a very darn good one, even tough everyone speaks English unlike in other two i mentioned.
Of course there are always good movies and bad movies from everyone, everywhere, and about everything, but European movies i have seen tend to be far more historically accurate, realistic, less black and white, but still very wery good. In Joyeux Noel for example, story is told from perspective of British, German and French, instead of just American perspective where muricans come and win WW1 and WW2 all by themselves.

Yeah I've been thinking this for a long time too, especially since for all the claims that media is eurocentric it's really not, it's americocentric, only really being eurocentric when it needs to trade the cause for soemthing that happpens in america back to it's causes, usually to england, in more rare cases to spain or italy.. For an example we get a movie about Robin Hood every ten years but I don't think there's one about Willhelm Tell yet.
Or take crash course in world history for all his claims of being eurocentric he mentions the americas a lot more depsite europe having and having always had a much larger population.

I don't think it'll be Crusader Kings 3.

My reason for this is I think that as Crusader Kings 2 has perfected almost everything that sort of game could have, Crusader Kings 3 is going to have to bring something new and radical to the table (not *instead* of older elements, but to build on them).

Given what fans seem to want, it may have to focus on developing its RPG features further, which would be (relatively) new ground for Paradox (not completely, because of Runemaster). Now I expect that allowing this capability would require quite a big Clausewitz upgrade, which they're probably not going to do until they've got the continuity of Rome2?-CK2-EU4-Vicky3-HoI4-Stellaris wrapped up.

I may be wrong, but this is my current theory.

Not so sure about, folding most DLC features into the main game is going to be the big feature of the sequel, which is why a sequel is needed so that they in further dlcs for the sequel cna rework and expand upon features added in the DLCs for this game (they cannot now because of compatability issues).
That said I agree in that I don't think ck2 will be out until they've brought all their games to the current clausewitz and that ck3 will be one fo the first games with the next clausewitz.

CK3 will definitely be on the next incarnation of clausewitz

I would love if it is CKIII, but, I don't think it is time for it yet. Of course they may start doing it now at slow pace and goal for a release in a couple of years...

I would like to see Rome, if done in a better way than original Rome, and covering maybe a wast timeline from .. well at least 280BC to .. 769 AD ?
I know a vast period, and it would require flexibile mechanic.. but I think it's doable.

Personal Favorites: Vicky 3, Ancient Grand Strategy game with focus on Rome or Greece, maybe even something untill 700 AD to create a link to CK2. Or some modern day simulator possible WW3 Scenarios. I'd rather don't wanna see a CK3 in the near future since CK2 got worked on for some time untill recently, creating nice depth and a good game experience. Maybe there will be 1 or 2 major DLCs for CK2 still to come, that would be fine by me since this game has already a shit load of DLCs :D

Possible Expactations: Victoria 2 related game with extended vanilla timeline 1700 - 2000 (would be so awesome), CK3 I really fear this one could come after HOI4 and maybe Paradox Dev. Studio even works on something completely that is not our typical Grand Strategy Title. Ancient Era game or even Modern Day past WW2 should sound appealing to the Devs imo, it would be time again^^

A Fantasy Grand Stragedy RPG hydrid?

Why not, Endless Legend is somethink like this: 4K like CIV but with an emphasis on fantasy.

Do you mean starting from 1280bc, which I understand would be a vast timeline & very playable, or do you mean 280bc which has all the problems the original Rome had. I.E no serious opposition & long term interest.

I beg you pardon?

I bet it's Vic III

My hopes still go for (won't happen probably) Sengoku II - I can remember there was a nice CK II Mod. Maybe I should check this out.

What about March of the eagles? I actually enjoyed that title ...

I meant 280BCm bzt 1280BC sounds better to me. Although I guess 753BC or 493BC would be easier and have more sense from a developing point of view.

I would play Warhammer Kings or Warcraft Universalis. I don`t think they will make it, and i would prefer to first get Vic 3 so i can do CK2->EU4->VIC3->HOI4 campaign, but after that i would love to see fantasy grand strategy like Crusader Kings 2. Naturally, Paradox should make their own fantasy universe, so that they are not limited by current lore of anything, they don`t have to pay for any copyrights and to make it work as well as possible in grand strategy.

Why would they make CKIII when CKII is clearly still being developed?
