Just an update, Himachi is working fine for me. It is a very easy program to use. It downloads and installs within 5 minutes, and you join a server and either shutdown windows firewall or create an exception for Himachi. Played a game with Duque just to see how the connection should be. I really want to start playing tomorrow, so I would suggest adding me to ICQ and getting the Himachi working for everyone.
So remember, here are the steps.
1) Download Himachi
2) Install it
3) Choose network server ( ICQ _King_of_Pain_ for info
4) disable firewall , even if it is windows firewall. This is essential, Hamachi wasn't working for me until I disabled my firewall.
5) Go to Europa Universalis 2
6) Go to Multiplayer
7) Go to Internet Game
8) And type in the IP address that will be listed in Hamachi, for the whoever is hosting the game.
JUst remember the rules, and it would be great if we could get started tomorrow. Me, Duque, KingOfPain have never played MP before, and we are anxious(even if I got stuck with the ottos!!)
I would also add, that suggestions for not limiting player alliances is good. To have a great diplomatic game, we should have a much hands-off approach to the game rules as possible. I understand rules are made to insure fair gameplay, and to prevent one player from conquering the whole of Europe, but it seems like they can be hindering to the diplomacy of the game.
Would it be fair for Austria and the Otto's to ally up and create an ultra power central power? Probably not. It seems like that combination would be deadly, and very non-historical. I think common sense should really guide the rules. For a nation like Spain and Austria though, I see nothing wrong with allying. Portugal even. It is essential for that little country to have a strong alliance.
As far as aggressiveness, I won't make it my duty to ruin other countries. But as the Ottomans, I'll try to stick to the historical role of waging war against the Catholic countries almost incessantly. Ottomans have severe technological disadvantage, when compared with the other European nations(with the exception of Russia), so of course early expansion seems to be the only way to go.
All in all, if the human nations decide not to interfere with each other, the game could get way out of balance. If France begins conquering Italy, and Austria has some agreement to not fight them, what will emerge is an unbalanced game in which the 7 human players eventually rule the world.
Not only that, but about human teaming. France is powerful at start up, and if used right, probably can become the most powerful nation in the game. If England is unable to join an alliance with Spain, what type of defense do they have against the aggressiveness of France?
I suggest having historical alliances with 2 HU players, no more. That would mean, The ottomans and the Austrians would not team up, nor would France and England. But that also means, that Portugal and Spain, Austria and Spain, England and Spain, could all form alliances.
Does this sound like a good idea?
