As the proud new owner of CK: DV, via PI's very nice CK giveaway (thanks Paradox!), I have a question. Which country is a good starter nation? I tried the Kievan Rus, and that turned out to be a bad idea (no surprise there given the mess Russian politics was pre-Mongols). So, which nation is a good starter one for a n00b? France? England? One of the Spanish counties? Obviously the HRE, the various Russian princes, and Roman Empire (Byzantium in-game) are bad choices due to internal conflicts, so what's a good choice?

My first was Poland, and seemed to be the perfect size to start with. It's also a kingdom so you didn't have anyone else lording it over you. ;) Expansion can be a bit easier since the areas to your northeast are Pagans (not fellow christians) so you're not penalized as much for getting medieval on them.

What? Apulia was easy. I took out all three Muslims at once and had no issues with those countries you mentioned, I was even able to offer and take Capua and Toscana as vassals. Maybe you just had a bad game? ;)

Also, how do you make your Norman King of Sicily Italian? It's 11 something and I've been trying to breed them into Italians with little luck.

A quick question for you decent folk;

I'm trying out the Crovans of Western Isles for my first game, and while I'm having quite a bit of fun, I'm a little lost regarding Thieves Guilds, Highwaymen and Smugglers. I honestly have no idea how one gets rid of them, aside from having positive stability helps. It seems every remotely profitable country I take over becomes inundated with them, with the exception, thankfully, of the Western Isles proper and the Isle of Man. Do I just have to wait them out, or is there anything proactive I can do?

What is a good independent Duchy to start off as in the Balkans? If there are any there at all, that is.

I once played with Zeta(?) or whatever the count near Ragusa is. And managed to form the Kingdom of Serbia and then kinda lost interest :p But I'll probably try it again.

P.S: Anybody thinks this old baby can still work in online multiplayer? I've only tried LAN mp, and that wasn't too stable (although it was only me and my little brother). Would anyone want to try an mp game?

Built 'court of justice's'. Also keep an eye on your efficiency, the lower it is the higher the chance of those nasty buildings appearing.

I had the same problem with excommunications playing Apulia. Just after about two years (after defeating Napoli and Capua) I sent my army down to the muslims in Sicily and ... got excommunicated before the dow.

Started a new game, conquered Napoli & Capua again and April 14, 1068 it happened again. WAD, bug or bad luck?

I will lend the thread.

Is there any Screenshot button like in EU3?

And is there any good independent Duchies in Northern Europe`?

A quirk I would call it. The Papal controller really likes to excommunicate his or her neighbours. Since Mathilda of Tuscany starts as PC, you are in the danger zone. To protect yourself, you need higher Piety than the Pope has prestige. As the Pope rarely has land before he becomes Pope, he starts with low prestige, and since he is old, he doesn't have much time to gather much. So usually a hundred or so is enough Piety to be safe. Easiest way to get that is to create a Bishopric in one of your newly conquered territories.

F11 makes screenshots.

One of the Irish is pretty good. Maybe Brittany.

Ahh that explains it then, I nailed the muslims first and took Capua peacefully, when the King of Sicily and Africa died he was Beatified. :)

hello, this is my question:

I am the Duke of Bretagne (excommunicated) engaged in a war against the king of France (excommunicated). They DoWed me for a claim on a small piece of land.

The problem I have, is that they are loosing more more than 100 money per month, but they never reach a negative value. They just stay on 0. (i loaded few saved games to check). What is the reason? they can go forever on war.

is it a feature? or is it a bug? (I have DV last beta patch)

Is it worth it to keep a province if you are 1 province over the demense limit? 2?

Keep effeciency above 75% and will most likely be fine. Below that and you get bad events, that might end up making your ruler crazy, and stability to drop like a stone.

Is it better income-wise though?

Depends a lot on the extra provinces. If you can control 4 and the 5th is a 0,56 income province, while the other four are 4+, then probably no. But if you capture Alexandria as your fifth province, then it is.

Well it would depend upon the lowest income province you held not the latest one you aquired...

I bang royal posts down everywhere to cover a bit of the slack. I am pretty OCD so I have the land my king always owns, and then the land my heir always owns, then rich provinces, often this means I go over the limit when my heir is very young, so Royal posts help.

I've got some good people who are in my family but not in my court so I can't use them to fill positions. Is there a way to do this? How do the 5 court members become court members and who is eligible to replace them? (I know ho to change them, but want to know how to place someone into position to replace.)

You can't... for them to be used as advisors, they have to be in your court. And there is no way to force or invite them back. You are stuck with what you have. If the court they reside in is destroyed, they sometimes migrate to the courts of family members. So in that case you could suddenly see an influx of family members in your court.

@Damascus:
If they are second or third cousins, consider marrying your daughters to your estranged male relations. They will have a better chance of moving to your court that way if they are unemployed elsewhere. I don't have numbers on it, just experience.

If all else fails, open your current save file in Wordpad or better yet Notepad++ (free download and good software for editing Paradox files) and change the location of the characters in question to your major title. It is useful to know how to edit save game files anyway, to overcome other limitations on the game engine.
