Surviving Mars takes place in an alternate Stellaris timeline confirmed.

Read the Steam description. Some of the Ideas do Sound like as if they are coming straight out of the Mars Triology :)

So we had been playing red Mars
This DLC will be Green Mars
That means the DLC after this is going to be Blue Mars, welcome to politics :D

Woohoo, maybe I have got finally reason why I should buy Surviving Mars (I was hyped on basic game but...that hype didn't last very long). But this terraforming theme is... awesome. I like that since I played this old (and for some mediocre) game UFO: Afterlight https://store.steampowered.com/app/237950/UFO_Afterlight/ . So I hope this terraform process isn't only reskinning Mars into green enviroment but it would have deeper gameplay influence...

Watching the stream right now. I was right on traditional martian disasters being replaced by the new weather events as terraform the planet.

Also looks like you will be able to flatten terrain! It generates a lot of waste rock and the soil quality of the flattened terrine starts off as being terrible (which matters with terraforming) so there is a cost to it, but it should change the dynamic of colonizing areas with steeper topography.

And I got to say, terraforming really changes how the game looks in late game. The expansion's name is very appropriate. Domes apparently can eventually go away once the atmosphere becomes breathable.

Two other things from the stream I didn't mention in my previous post.

1. Terraforming has an entirely new tech line dedicated just to it. So while significantly shifting the terraforming parameters of the whole planet is a late game activity, you'll start doing little things to lay the groundwork pretty much right away. There is also at least one new breakthrough focused on terraforming.

2. There is a new sponsor called the Terraforming Initiative. My impression is that they are essentially a terraforming-focused IMM. Not sure what their bonuses are beyond starting off with a breakthrough that helps with terraforming.

Overall, this feels like a much bigger expansion than Space Race, especially by the metric of how much it will impact gameplay at any given moment.

This is why I'm glad I got the season pass. Amazing!

I saw a documentary about the terraforming of Mars, and it is not that impossible,we can beguin the process in the near future.
I can't hope if at the mid/late game the colonists can live without the dome habitat, breathing the new thicc nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere and start planting stuff.

Maybe I'll finally get this game, its not dead, apparently.

The domes were removed in the late-game terraformed Mars colony Nikki showed in the stream, and also a large city in a triangular grid pattern was being developed.
