Hi everybody,

I have Victoria v1.01, PIII 800 Mhz processor, Windows 98 operating system.

Last week, my PC was experiencing severe technical difficulties, so I took it to a computer store. The technical assistant said that my graphics card was faulty, and was causing problems, so he replaced it with an identical graphics card (Nvidia GeForce2 MX-400 64MB). The only difference between the new graphics card and the old is that the old one was made by HIS while the new one was made by Axle (Triple D Corporation). When I got my computer back, I attempted to play Victoria with no success. The introduction plays (the bink player I think) but before the loading screen appears, the games CTDs. I tried a few times, but still the game would not load. I re-installed Victoria several times, but the problem was still there. I finally went to the Victoria_settings and noticed that there were no resolution options anymore! In the resolution setting, there is nothing there at all. The game no longer has a resolution setting.

I took my computer back to the computer store, and when the tech guy hooked my hardrive up to his monitor, the game worked! The tech guy said he had no idea why it didn't work before, but it should now. So I took my hardrive back home, but it didn't work again. It worked in the computer store, but not at home, and I am at a complete loss as to what is happening. I telephoned the techguy who was quite uninterested, and he was unable to offer an explanation. He said I could bring my PC back to him if I wanted, but I don't think there is much point.

I then proceeded to send an email message to Nvidia, who forwared the message onto the actual makers of the graphics card, Axle, a division of a Hong Kong based chip maker named Triple D. They have not not replied to my message yet, which I sent them well over 48 hours ago.

At this point, I have no idea what is happeing. Victoria played perfectly with my old graphics card, which is (from what I can tell) the exact same graphics card as my new one (GeForce2 MX-400 64 MB). The techguy who installed the new card is convinced there is nothing wrong with the card, and he doesn't seem willing to help. The card is directX compatible, and I have directX version 9 which is required for Victoria.

Could someonep please help me, I will appraciate any assistance.

Thanks in advance. :)

Have you renamed the AVI folder to 'AVI Back'? That appears to have helped some people avoid the CTD.

Bon chance!

Oh, also, you might want to change your system resolution (in windows) to 1024x768 or 1280x1024...see if that does the trick.

Also, change the color depth to 16bit

Bon Chance!

Sounds like your monitor is not set up correctly in the settings.
Check to see if it lists your monitor.
Renameing the AVI folder to AVI_back and setting your color depth to 16BIT should work as well.

Thanks for the quick replies! :)

I just tries that, but now the bink player doesn't load either. When I click on Victoria, the screen goes blank for a second, then it goes back to the desktop.

My system resolution is currently 600x800. Before, I had Victoria on 1280x2024 iirc, and it worked fine without my system resolutiob being that. Well, anyway I tried that but now I only have three resolution options for my system in the display properties settings: 800x600, 848x840, 640x480. I know I had more than that before.

I have no idea what is going on with my computer. :( The avi_back doesn't work, and I already have the color depth on 16BIT. There are no longer any resolutions for Victoria, and I'm sure it has something to do with the graphics card, but I am useless when it comes to these things, so I have no idea what is happeing.

Right click on desktop, properties,Settings, Advanced, monitors.
What does it say for monitor?

When I click on advanced, monitors it says:

----

Packard Bell Monitor

Monitor is energy star compliant (with ticked box)
Automatically detect plug and play monitors (with ticked box)
Reset display on suspend/resume (with tocked box)

----

My monitor is missing the 1024x768 and 1280x1024 resolution settings, one of which is the one I used to play Victoria on. Without that resolution, I am not able to play Victoria. Is there any way I can get those two resolutions back?

Try selecting Default monitor, one that has high resolutions.

Open Display Properties in Control Panel.
Click the Settings tab, click Advanced, and then click the Monitor tab.
The monitor that is selected for your computer is displayed under Monitor Type.

If correct monitor isn't listed, click Properties.
Click the Driver tab, and then click Update driver.
After the Hardware Update Wizard starts, click Install from a list or specific location, and then click Next.
Click Don't search. I will choose the driver to install, and then click Next. This provides a list of monitor manufacturers and models.
In Manufacturers, click the manufacturer of your monitor, and then in Models, click the model name.

If your monitor isn't listed, click (Standard monitor type) in Manufacturers, and then choose the most compatible setting for your monitor in Models.
Click Next, and then click Next again.
Note

To open Display Properties, click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.

Thanks for your help Castellon, but I'm still rather confused.

The correct monitor is listed. I can't locate the default monitor in Advanced, monitors. In Display Properties, Settings (in the display option) I have the choice of Packard Bell Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 and Default Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/Mx 400. Is this the default monitor you are talking about? I am not able to use it anyway, because the 'Apply' option is greyed out.

This is a really strange problem.

If you follow the instructions you should get a default monitor, that'e the point.
Obviously the driver info from the Packard Bell driver is not reporting it's capabilities correctly. So replacing it with a Default driver that allows those modes, will solve your problem.

You could also try reinstalling your Video card drivers (make sure you have the latest version).
