No sound on startup, and crashing during load [Linux]

Hello all,

I'm currently having some issues on my Linux laptop, trying to run this game. I posted about it here, In short, I have no sound when I first startup the game. I have to go into Settings>Sound> and hit apply. The game freezes for 2 minutes (roughly) and then has sound.

Next: when I try to load a campaign save I created yesterday, it crashes. If you check the link, I posted the output from the command line right after the crash.

I have tried running the GOG and the Steam version of this game, and get the same issues. I am very unsure where to go from here. The link has a suggestion to try updating from Mint 19.1 to 19.2. I don't think that will solve this issue, but I'm willing to give it a go.

Does anyone have any other ideas, outside that?

Not really, sorry. Of course Mint is not a supported distro so if it's related to that we won't be able to fix this, most likely.

Same with using Vulkan I guess, not a tested environment for the game.

Also in Steam please click on Steam-Help-System Info, and paste everything there into a text file and attach that here.
 
Certainly. I don't think this is a Mint issue, as this is the only program having trouble. No other program is causing any issues of any kind.

Also, I thought Ubuntu was supported? Is this not the case?

There is OpenGL and SDL support which should work in most distributions,
I would recommend looking up the installation of "OpenGL/SDL 64 and 32 bit variants" by editing the sources.list and update the Nvidia drivers. lookup the PPA repo for the correct drivers should be named "Graphics-Drivers"

About Andrew's statement:
Vulkan isn't fully implemented yet. There isn't any plans to bring full Vulkan support to the game (Isn't really needed for the game).

Mobile stuff:
There is Glu32 support but that's usually for mobile editions.

Audio:
SDL contains the audio drivers that the game uses to initialize sound.

GOG versions don't modify the main executable to add or remove features, The copy is licensed to GOG free of DRM then sold to the public, Judging from what Linux Mint usually installs in USB/DVD installation it may contain the Nvidia + Vulkan drivers, So try using PPA to download the correct drivers. You can install the Ubuntu versions of the Nvidia drivers in Linux Mint.
 
Open source drivers don't work usually, The correct drivers are held in non-free within the repo. I would recommend a full backup of the contents in the drive just so you don't have to waste time downloading, run Ubuntu either in a dual boot setting, replacing Linux Mint or try Live USB mode and test the executable in Ubuntu.

Tell us how it goes and if you will decide on switching to a distro that works with PA.

Non-Free is apart of the mirror listing, Non-free can contain a lot of very useful things, such as Graphics drivers to all kinds of software. Non-Free just means not Open Source or OEM supplied usually.
 
This is just an example of what it might look like for a Debian Buster sources.list if you included non-free:
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free

So look it up for Linux Mint mirror's as I don't want to mess up your system.
 
You can check your sources list in /etc/apt/sources.list
You can also add custom sources in /etc/apt/sources.list.d

nano /etc/apt/sources.list
or
vi /etc/apt/sources.list
after modifying the sources then apt update.
sudo apt-get update
 
Ok, I just want to make sure I'm understanding you correctly. Your saying I should backup my data, and do a complete re-install of my OS?

Isn't that a bad idea for a single program not functioning correctly? Also, why are we ssure this is a video card issue?

Edit: that said, this only started happening after I was doing a software update, and my laptop overheated and shut down. So it could well be that *something* is corrupted. But wouldn't it be better to determine what, and correct it? Instead of simply wiping the drive out

Those things that I stated may fix it but they are just suggestions, I would suggest a Live USB environment just to check if the game is able to function on the machine (Only if you want to), Then you can decide what actions to take. If not then I would recommend a backup of the applications you’ve installed like Steam games and files in your user then reinstalling the OS or installing a different distribution. As you stated it only happened after the system powered down during an update then it’s really the only option.

Usually Linux doesn’t error out like that if it powered down during a system update, You would get an error in Apt when trying to get a package. Seeing that I really don’t see much in the files you provided at the start it’s hard to determine what the actual issue is without actually investigating it remotely or being there physically to check the file system. Which isn't an option due to it being a security risk to access a customer’s machine.

Edit: Sorry if it seemed like I was requesting you to backup the entire machine. I was awake for 26 hours that day.

Now about the video card “issue”, The only reason I stated an updated GPU driver is custom engines that PA runs doesn’t really do much with generic drivers the system provides on install. OSes only provide those to get the foot in the door but it’s up to the user to install the correct one or an updated one to best suit the things you’re planning to use on it.

Ok, I can say with 100% certainty that this game ran in the past. Sadly, while the updates were installing, the system overheated and shut down. Plus I was unable restore it immediately, because I didn't know about time shift then (I do now though, and has saved my bacon once or twice since).

Right after that shut down, the system was reduced to its minimum driver set. No wifi, no audio, no video drivers. But once I got home, and was able to connect it to the internet, it immediately downloaded the missing drivers, and behaved normally. The only difference was, that I could see, was Prison Arcitect was no longer functioning.
 
Well as long as you can get Linux Mint working again then I will be happy to say this thread is solved.

I also had issues with Linux Mint in the past (Not game related) but nothing this serious and even lost 3TB of data on a kernel issue in my server running OpenSuse Tumbleweed. So I completely understand how bad Linux can get when a problem does happen.

If you have any further issues then let us know and if the machine does overheat then I would probably ask you get the dust out of the key components for cooling, Maybe get a cooling mat for the time being until that happens.

I was about to say that this was not a mint issue, and instead a PA issue again. But ever since you suggested that the graphics driver might be an issue, I've been testing different driver options available to me. And now I'm currently having a new issue where I'm getting messages about not using the correct driver, despite having the most recent driver selected in the driver options. So...it seems it took a while for mint to destabilize further from just the game, to other issues.

While the issue isn't solved, I'm no longer convinced this isn't simply a PA issue. I'm going to try to do a repair install, and see if that fixes the issue. If not, I created a full backup yesterday, after mis-understanding what you were suggesting, so I think I can safely run a full install if needed.
 
Oh, I'm sorry that I caused an inconvenience for you with the machine,

I guess the reinstall would do the job and now that you have backed up the machine, You wouldn't need to re-download the games you probably have on the machine.

This isn't a PA issue and we know that now. I just hope everything works out for you.
