As I started Cities:Skylines, and went for the resolution options, I found that my native resolution of 1280x1024 is not included. In fact, no 5:4 resolutions seem to be included at all. Now I am aware these are a bit uncommon, but they are by no means mystical enough to warrant exclusion like this.

On a related note, picking the closest 4:3 resolution brings up an interesting issue where, instead of the expected black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, these areas become 'transparent' showing whatever was on there last. In my case, that's the Steam overlay's UI. Perhaps that would warrant a look at as well.

Same problem here, same resolution : 1280x1024

I found this :
16:9, 16:10, 21:9 and 4:3 ratios are supported. This can result in black borders when playing with a TV. To use a custom resolution, launch the game from the command line.

But what are the arguments to send with command line ?

I have this problem as well. 1280x1024 seems to not be supported.

EVERY other game I have, including those recently released, supports 1280x1024 out of the box. Not sure why Cities: Skylines should be any different.

Can this be fixed?

I also have this problem. While my display resolution is 1280x1024, there are no 5:4 can be chosen.

4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 are available but using those ratio will cause black border.
The only solution at the moment is that I go to Option > Misc > Reset Configuration, and restart the game.

The resolution will be changed back to default, the black border will disappear. I think the default resolution setting is automatically matching your native resolution (I hope) but once you change the ratio, you cannot change it back. Hope the support team may solve this issue. :)

Similar troubles here. My primary monitor is 1200x1920 (portrait mode) and my secondary monitor is 1920x1200. If I really can't play at 10:16 aspect ratio (which sucks), then at the very least I'd like to play the game in windowed mode on the secondary monitor, but I can't get it into windowed mode. Choosing windowed mode and clicking apply does nothing. There are 0 options under the resolution menu and only 4:3 under the aspect ratio dropdown. Heck, I'd even be ok if I could get it into a 4:3 window on the 1200x1900 monitor.

I don't know if this will work for anyone else, but I am able to get 1280x1024 in windowed mode after hours of trying just about everything. I should mention: setting the launch options in Steam worked, but it also disabled the main menu, rendering the game unplayable. So you should try that first (-screen-width 1280 -screen-height 1024). It might work for you.

Anyway, here's my really interesting work-around:

  1. In the game options, set to fullscreen, at whatever is the closest to your target resolution. I set mine to 1024x768.
  2. Quit the game
  3. Launch it again, but when the Colossal Order logo appears, hit Ctrl+F (or ⌘+F on mac), which toggles between fullscreen and windowed.
  4. On my machine, this kicked the game into windowed mode at my native resolution, which is 1280x1024

Again, this might not work for everyone. But I'm curious to see if it's just me.
