hi,
i just bought ckdv and i have numerous questions.
i started with byzantium made peace with the turks and everything went fine for some years even when the new emporer took office.
but then someone revoltet and i conquered it and gave it to courtier but then more and more vassals started to revolt or declared independence without attacking me (how is that even possible?)
my questions are:
if i conquer an illoyal vassal i have the option to do nothing, to acknwledge his claim or take his title. isnt it possible to let him keep his title but without losing him as a vassal.
so could someone sum up the do`nots. what can i do to keep my vassals loyal ?
just give me some ground rules.
started another games with england and after a certain point as it happened in my byzantium game everything collapsed because of endless illoyal vassals and i dont know what to do.
is there a guide or something.

there a several mods. what do they change for a noob like me ?

thanks in advance.

If you re-conquer a rebellious vassal, you have the option to make him your vassal again. In the peace deal, it's the first option (which is blank when you first select the peace option). Just re-vassalize them and recoginize their claim on their title.

On the vassals declaring independance without a war : there is an event that gives a vassal the option to declare independance without a war, so there's your problem. But even then, you get a free claim on their title, so you can just re-vassalize them through a war.

What was the Diplo score of the new Byz emperor? A low Dip will negatively affect vassal loyalty. Try and find the best Chancellor you can to boost the score, and make sure the Chanc is loyal and is not losing loyalty.

Did you get "A Vassal is trying to start a civil war?" That's Realm Duress, Really Bad News(TM), it means other vassals will start falling away quickly. I save at the beginning of each new month so I can reload in case of RD.

If a vassal declares independence, he may or may not declare war on you. If you don't have a claim on him, you'll have to try and revoke his title. Once you reconquer him, make him your vassal. I have a "rule" where if a vassal revolts three times, I claim his title ('three strikes') :p

Sometimes vassals will get a Rebellious trait. Sometimes they're your rival. Sometimes they're just d**kheads :p

i have played 10 years with byzantium and crushed 20 or more rebellions. thats just boring.
i dont have the civil war thing. is there any logic behind all this. i can give them money. i can give them fosterlings. nothing changes.
to me its just some kind of game breaking bug. are the mods helping with the "endless rebellion" thingy ?

ps: found the beginner threads. maybe they can help

This isn't a 'bug', but I agree with you that far too often vassals rebel without any solid reason.

But seriously, the Byzantine Empire isn't a very good start if you're just learning the game. In ALL my games I have played with CK, they ALWAYS get huge civil wars which last hundreds of years.

thats a shame. i always like to play the byzantines in the paradox games.
Look at it from a different angle. Your game will never get dull, as it will always have something for you to deal with. In my game, after doing La Reconquista, the game has been kinda losing steam, since nothing exciting happens anymore. If vassals break out, I revassalize, and that's it. No huge wars, no civil wars, no realm duress... Losing is fun!

Edit - Me and my big mouth... A vassal just declared independence, so I'm at +0 Stab and with Realm Duress. Fun!

another question. i have started a game with apulia and conquered several counties. a gave the the count of napoli title to my oldest son. i read somewhere that its good for your son to be a duke so i gave him the duke of salerno title but now he is independent ???
another thing i have noticed. my ruler died and i thought the title would go to his oldest son ( the napoli guy) but instead his jounger brother became the new ruler ??? is that correct ? have i done something wrong ???

You may not know this but each realm has a section for laws. You can choose how church land is disposed between you and the Pope. You can choose the law of the realm which deals with taxes and levies as well as loyalty of your vassals. Also you can choose your succession laws. Now there is one law which chooses the strongest son and so the game may have done this. If you click on the ruler picture you will see a list of successors so the first in the list is always the main heir of the realm.

Your problem with vassel loyalty stems from character traits (both ruler and the vassal), prestige, piety and diplomacy as well as claims, rivalrys and friendships. Also having royal connections or being in line for the throne helps. Example if I have a King who is decitful, energetic, vengful and sceptical then my vassal who is lazzy, forgiving and zellous will be oposed to my ruler and will be less loyal. So for example playing as England in 1066 William the Conquerer will find that his courtier Osborn is not very loyal to him so making osborn a bishop is a bad idea.

I hope this helps.

P.s also take a look when you make peace deals and see what gains and loses prestige, piety and gains a poor reputation it is the only way to play effectivly.

- Your son gets independent, as he holds the same title (Duke) as you do, but before you ask, his lands will unite with yours when
he inherits yours.
- Giving land. Its good, as your son can get some traits (which is better sometimes regarding courtier loyalty), prestige and piety in advance.
- Inheritance goes with the laws, so you probably have Consanguinity which means the strongest son will be heir. Check your laws !

Hey, Byzatium is great fun ! It was really bad for me the first two generations, but then i conquered the whole near-east, including Egypt and Khwarzim and going into russia. You missed a lot fun. BTw, its was my second game. Learned a lot the hard way.

but this must be a bug. i changed from duke of apulia to king of sicily and reloaded (is that still necessary ?) but now i have lost all my techs???

ps: i have installed dvip mod

what i like to do is switch to gavelkind at that point.

tear my kingdom apart, and then maybe restart as one of the crappier kingdoms - Africa or Ireland or Wales.

I appointed my son as a Count (me as a Duke) and then almost 2 days later he became a duke and broke away from me. Did he just claim the duke title and wala became duke and picked up an extra providence?

I also did this before he was 16 which was probably a bad move in itself.

did you give him enough land that he can create a duchy?

or did he inherit one?

are you playing on the newest patches? with deus vult?

some counties are one county duchies in the older patches. is this the case? did he claim the same duchy that he was in? more facts will make everyone more helpful.

ANYHOO, I have a n00b question myself.

so, i'm pounding the moors in spain, and most of the emirs flee to distant corners of the world - with their titles intact. now, I cannot create the duchies I would like to in spain (granada, badajoz, etc.). i have tried to pursue the bastards, but they usually have a vassal somewhere bizarre - like kuwait - and I can't always get to them.

is there any way to get the titles back short of eliminating the emirate and all its sheikdoms?
