NOT A BUG: Tech bug? Maybe?

I just picked up this game Thursday and I'm still no sure what's the difference here between a quirk and a bug. I've hit a problem with the tech tree. It seems that I've skipped a level and gone from level one to level three while level two is still crossed off. To make things worse, it's the architecture field, which means I can't build churches and my monarch's been taking hits to his Piety because he has "other priorities" besides Crusading. I've been hesitant to research because, for all I'd know, I'd just get level four instead of two.

I'm I just buggered here? Will level two everntually spread by osmosis to my capital or what?

It's perfectly ok to have techs without earlier ones, after all there is no actual tech tree in Crusader Kings. There are tech gategories and the later ones are harder to get, but nothing stops you from having them. That's especially convenient when neighbouring a technologically advanced nation, especially Muslim ones in early scenarios.

Research gives you chances at both level 2 and level 4 in this situation. And level 2 will eventually spread too.
