Because I am sometimes unable to locate ships on the high seas, I've always suspected that they disappear in certain sea zones, only to reappear later, but I have no proof of this.

Ships definitely disappear under the following circumstances: after re-starting the game, if your ships were docked in a port of a nation through which you have military access, the ships will not appear on the screen. However, they are still there (even though you can't see them), and you can still "click" on them (if you know where they are) and move them into the adjacent sea zone, where they will magically reappear.

Just the icons disappear, or the ships thenselves do? The latter would be due to attrition.

Well, there is one bug that IIRC always has existed. And it is in the sea zone in which Vitu Levu is situated. If you have a fleet in that sea zone its icon will sometimes become invisible. IIRC it is when the center of the screen is slightly to the East of the island. When you adjust the center the icon reappears. I do not know if the zoom level is relevant. I guess anyone can try this out for himself because I have had the same problem with different computers and monitors.

It is possible a similar bug occurs in other sea zones as well. However, I have played in all areas of the world and never seen this bug anywhere but in Fidjii. So I doubt any costal sea zone has the same bug. But e.g. a sea zone in the middle of the Indian Ocean may well have it. One dies not pay much attention to ships in that area.

To know if the ships are actually there, you can use the <PageUp> or <PageDown> keys to scroll through your armies and navies; if the ships don't end up being selected as you move through the whole of your military forces, it means they were lost at sea through attrition. If they can be selected, but no icon shows, let us know the particulars of where and when. :)

Do you happen to have reached the naval level where the last graphic set is used (Triple decker IIRC can't remember number)? The ships commonly disappear in almost any sea zone at this tech.

They do? I've never seen this and don't recall any other reports of it.

Thanks everyone for the respones. Now I have to tell you why they disappeared (geez, I hate to admit this - very embarrassing) I didn't realize that when I changed the map from normal to political that unit icons disappeared. Sorry for my ignorance!

He-he, well several other bugs popped up because of it when we oldtimers started searching at the bottom of our memory to see if we could did up anything similar to what you described :D

Really? It happens to me all the time. They move disappear then appear again. It seems to happen more often than not during and after a battle.
I suspect you have a problem in your EU2 installation then.
