I was running the 1.04a NA on my 1.5 GHz, 512 MB Ram, DirectX 9.0b, XP Home machine. I had a problem loading a couple of save files from the 1066 scenario (about 15 MB in size). They would not load. The game would stop responding, utilizing 99% of my processor and about 300 MB of my RAM. I was able to use Subterrainian's ulilities for wife finding and family tree file generation on these save files.

I browsed these forums and saw there was a new patch (Nov 18) available. I applied it and attempted to load these same save files. This time, they load, but as soon as I start time forward, I get a CDT. I can access menus and the map before I click on "Start Game".

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

You could check some of the threads discussing CTDs, one more elaborate one is in the public beta forum. I wouldn't be surprised if the save was damaged for good and can't be resurrected, although many CTDs are fixed for the 18th Nov beta patch the fixes can be guaranteed to work on a game started with that patch, or later, only.

I've rolled back to 1.04a NA. I still have the problem where I cannot load a save file over a certain size. I have not seen any other threads that deal with being unable to load a save file.

I really enjoy this game and want to continue it from the point of my save.

What troubleshooting steps can I perform at this time?

Sorry, I really can't help you with this one:(

Perhaps somebody else has brighter ideas, if not then all I can think of is wait for the next beta patch and hope something is fixed in it related to this. Unfortunately I doubt any fix would help in retrieving broken saves, rather help in there not being more broken saves.

Im having the exact same problem, id play the game for a while, it would load ok untill my guess is i have two many titles, specifically duke of two places. Loading the saved game with only one helped, but lost me 10-15 years ingame play

beta-patch savegame issues

This might be quite interesting. I´ve had similar cases of corrupt savegames, but after mending the game a bit as proposed in other threads at this forum I haven´t experienced them. Now then to this with CTD after the beta-patches. I´ve discovered just the same thing when using the nov-betapatch, that my game loads, and as soon as I press "start game" it CTD. Now, what I did was that I applied an older beta-patch, I chose the "ck_104b_15thoct2004 - take 2" for this, and 'Voila!', no more CTD. My savegame is playable again. Unfortunatly, I have the weird sound issue, but I can live with that, at least until a more working beta-patch is out. :D

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem - none of my four saved-game files will load. In every case I have two or three duke titles. I don't see how all these saved-game files could have become corrupt - more likely an error in the game programme? I really don't see how the game is playable under these circumstances, since I'm only forty years into a 1066 campaign.

Actually there is quite a lot of information about this problem in a thread on the Support board called "Crash on loading a saved game", which gives some suggestions for solving the problem. The basic problem, afaict, is one of memory, and 128MB RAM really isn't sufficient to run this game. I bet everyone having these problems only has 128MB RAM, like me. One way round this may be to increase the computer's virtual memory. For more info see
