I have a game were on turn 14 the Growth declares war with me completely unprovoked. At the end of my turn 14 I have a trusted reputation and I'm at peace with the Growth having just finished another quest for them and bought some units from them. On their turn 14 they declare war and attack my units, the units are not even in growth territory, this is a scenario game so no script should be at play here and i have the highest reputation of any player with them... so, what gives? The only action i took during the game that the growth did not like was completing a quest for the psyfish, but being the first quest this did not even give me a penalty.

I would attach the save, but cant find it, anyone know where saves are located?

From what I have read there was an explicit goal in development to make sure the AI does not randomly declare war for no apparent reason. I have never seen an AI player do this (player meaning a "major" faction, like Syndicate or Amazon) but apparently NPC faction can randomly do this? I don't know if this is a bug or a really strange design choice, either way I'm sad :( being nice and helpful was for nothing.

Now going to start a new game as a Promethean and burn all the stupid plants

is there a celestian who you met? they get a pretty early op that can drop you 20 points and up them 20 points... at that point they might just be able to get the Growth to go to war with you.

I don't know enemies secret tech, but they did not use the Sway Ideology operation. If they had their rep with Growth would have gone up. And even if they did use it, it would not have mattered 20 points would not even give me a negative rep and even if i had a negative rep they can only ask for aid in war if they have one of the top two diplomatic states and they have neutral with growth.

I presume you didn't accidentally build on a sector next to one of their Dwellings and then refuse the make up Quest, but I guess I have to ask anyway.

Did it happen at the same turn (or one after) you completed a Psi-Fish quest?

No buildings close to them no. I'm not 100% sure on the timing but if i recall correctly i completed the psyfish quest on turn 12, they sent a message about "don't help the other dudes" turn 13 and this happens turn 14. Could have been the message came the same turn as i did the quest. I have done this in other games however and normally all that happens if you do a a mission for another faction, after they warned you about not doing so, is you lose 5 influence with them, not 1035 influence :p

If you drop below zero when you are at peace (i mean level of cooperation with the NPC faction), you go to war. And war gives you -1000.
Kinda, you have to go to Neutral (lower than peace) before you can get to 0, but yeah the modifier would not have to be -1035, -40 would do it. But that is still eight times more than the normal -5!
